Hi Selena - Aren't you surprised that more of us are not coming out of the closet I mean medroom.

Seriously, I wish we have our own group. I think I will petition for a nursing group what do you think? Any suggestions on how we can get one going and get the interest in it?

Hello, all you nurses! This is a good idea, I love it! I have been an RN for apx. 16 years in a town of about 50,000, pretty rural area in Oklahoma. I am in home health, and love it! I think you have a great idea, and we can be a support to one another, plus, you KNOW nurses have a sick sense of humor, that sometimes other don't appreciate! Lets keep it up, maybe others will find us!

Soon to be an empty-nester, may be interested in travel nursing....anyone out there had that experience?? If so, any advice? I am just beginning to check into it, and would appreciate any input you might have! Thanks in advance, and good luck to all in your chosen profession!

You are right about needing somewhere to unload or be able to use that "sick sence of humor" without offending someone would be great. Petition for a site. Hello everyone! I am a LICSW. working for a mental health organization. I work with clients from age 13-70. Hard and extremely draining, however, gratifyin; as all our professions in the medical field are. Am I right in saying that on Mondays (or when your beginning of the week is), we are ready to tackle what comes at us. By Friday we are so brain dead, we are lucky to find our way home. Then there are those late hours we did not plan on, or the emergency that always occurs at the end of the shift. I do not believe that those who are not in this field understand the emotional roller coaster we go through on an hour to hour basis. I would not change a thing. I totally enjoy my job and my clients.

Glad to see this post. I am not a nurse, but have worked in healthcare for 28 years as a Respiratory Therapist. This would be a nice place to discuss career, burnout and reinventing oneself while staying in the field of medicine. My main focus or love was in the area of premature infants, working as a transport therapist in a neonatal intensive care unit before moving back to my hometown area to become a department manager for a 100+ bed hospital in the Midwest. Other career interests were caring for post-op open heart patients, neuro intensive care, surgical intensive care and trauma/ER services department. Did a lot of work with Emergency Preparedness Planning and continue to sit on several committes as a community member. Also have a great interest in Sleep Disorders Medicine and treatment of those disorders.

I recently gave up my position in middle management at a small local healthcare facility to assist with the care of my aging parents. Quite a change of pace from the 50 + hour weekly grind, challenages and changes in patient care standards as the heatlh profession becomes more business oriented vs. patient care oriented, and giving of ones self beyond healthy limits as we all do that work in health care.

P.S. After working in Emergency Preparedness Planning over the last 5 years, I think fire fighters should be welcome in the forum. Most are EMT's and first responders and all of us who have worked the ER circuit know these guys are on the front line for most everything that roles through the door.

HELLO, I'D JUST LIKE TO SAY THANK GOD FOR NURSES! MY MOTHER WENT IN THE HOSPITAL IN APRIL '08 FOR HEART VALVE REPLACEMENT AFTERWARDS SHE WAS SENT TO A REHAB FACILLITY WHILE THERE SHE LOST QUITE A BIT OF BLOOD FROM WHAT WAS THOUGHT TO BE A HEMROID WELL IT TURNED OUT TO BE CANCER! SHE'S 76 AND THE DOCTORS FELT SHE WAS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR CHEMO SO THEY DECIDED TO OPERATE, AFTER 2 SURGERYS WITHIN 2 WEEKS MY BROTHER AND I FINALLY BROUGHT MOM HOME. WE ARE NOW TAKING CARE OF HER HAND AND FOOT THE BEST WE CAN(WITH THE HELP OF VISITING REHAB NURSES)AND MY WIFE WHO IS AN RN. THE POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE IS I DON'T THINK I OR MY MOM AND BROTHER COULD HAVE POSSIBLY MADE IT WITHOUT THE CARE,COMFORT,SUPPORT AND ATTENTION FROM THE LOVING NURSES WE ENCOUNTERED THROUGHOUT THIS HORRIBLE ORDEAL! IT WAS SOOO TRAMATIC THAT I MYSELF HAD A MILD STROKE BEHIND IT! MY MOM WAS EVERYTHING TO ME GROWING UP AND THERE WAS NO WAY I WILL EVER ABANDOND HER NOW WHEN SHE NEEDS ME THE MOST! I'VE LEARNED FIRST HAND WHAT CARE AND KINDNESS CAN DO FOR THE BODY AND SOUL,FROM CARING AND KIND NURSES! I FEEL ALL NURSES SHOULD RECEIVE FREE HEALTH CARE I THINK ITS A SHAME NURSES HAVE TO PAY FOR MEDS,HEALTHCARE AND SUCH WITH OR WITHOUT INSURANCE. AFTER MY STROKE I STARTED WORKING PT FOR A TRAVEL NURSE AGENCY RECRUITING NURSES FOR TRAVEL ASSIGNMENTS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. ITS BEEN REALLY NICE HELPING THEM GET A CHANGE OF SCENERY AND VISIT AND WORK IN PLACES THEY'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO GO. I FOUND OUT THAT ITS NOT JUST THE DOCTORS BUT IN REALITY ITS THE NURSES THAT ARE TRUELY THE HEART AND HEALING FORCE OF HOSPITALS!IN CLOSING I'D LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY ENLARGED HEART TO ALL NURSES WHO GET A CHANCE TO READ THIS,YOU ARE A VERY SPECIAL.........MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS!

The burn out is vast -but I have not met anyone in the field who does not work hard, work for the person (definitely not the pay), and have a great heart. Glad to join such a group as this forum is producing!
I have worked in-patient Psych for 19 years. I am currently doing screenings for the mental health center and have worked for 9 years in schools.

I have been taking care of my parents (88 & 81) both of whom have Alzheimer's for 3 years now. I'm not a real nurse just a son that would'nt let his parents be shipped off to a nursing home. Even though I'm not a real nurse but does cleaning up poop, changing diapers and giving out meds qualify me to join this group?? I also want to add that without the Hospice nurses I don't know if I could handle it.

Hello to everyone!!!!! I have been a skilled nursing home administrator for 23 years. Have to say, there have been very hard times, but it's the precious moments that a special resident made a difference in my life that I cherish. Wouldn't have traded my career for anything ... but times have changed and it's harder than ever. Really thinking it's time to do something different, for my own sanity and health.

I am an RN in Florida. I just made or am making the transition out of hospital. Just too old to do those 12hrs with the growing size of pt assignments in this area. I am working for the State to promote flu and pneumonia vaccinations for adults and for Hospice to maintain some patient contact. I love the 8-5 M-F work week. I also dont mind at all coming home without total exhaustion full of aches and pains. I also am going back to school in Jan to start on my masters and perhaps I can finish that about the time Social Security kicks in. LOL
