Actually sub is just short for submissive. Now there is a difference in being a submissive and a slave. As for liking it rough or being manhandled, that could be a preference of both, but not necessarily done.
A sub/submissive, is usually one who surrenders control of his/her body and behavior (within pre-defined limitations) to another for erotic play. This is usually not done on a daily basis. They basically like to be "ordered around" from time to time, but they don't commit heart and soul
A slave is primarily, a submissive involved in a committed relationship, more of a 24/7 type thing.

I am a dom, but my relationships are equally agreed upon from the start the limits, what we like, and whats enjoyable and whats not. There is no casual dom/sub relationship, there has to be an understanding going into the relationship or it is just the dom thinking of his wants and needs and no one elses, the sub may go along, but its not love... its abuse of your lovers willingness. It goes back to that conversation and those limits. I want to be in control of my own life, and a partner in the relationship. But at the same time, I can not be more dominant than the man, I just can't respect a man who lets me walk all over him. He has to be able to say when enough is enough...and behind closed doors...I don't enjoy being in charge at all.
