I am a Marine Corps Veteran who served in Iraq back when it first started. I did my job came home got out and did my thing ( I served from 01-05). While working at a local gun shop to fund my way through school, a Vietnam Vet came in to look at some guns. I noticed his USMC Vet hat and said a simple "Semper Fi Brother." He paused, looked at me, and asked me where I served. I didnt have on anything visible stating I was a Marine and my tattoos were covered due to company policy. We talked briefely I thanked him for his service and he paused with a tear in his eye. He asked me to step around to his side of the counter and I did. He gave me one of the biggest hugs I have ever gotten and told me "Welcome home. Don't ever let anyone take that away from you."

That was a few years ago and since then I graduated, quit that job, and got a job at a near by PD, but I will never forget him. Two different generations, two different wars, same pride and message.

I just wanted to share that and say thank you to all my brothers and sisters.

First off and most important thank you Marine! And welcome to our little group.
As a Vietnam Vet (101st) I never went through some of the crap some others say they faced after discharge.I came home, my daddy was also a veteran and where I lived most men of his generation also were. I heard a little grumbling because we "hadnt won" and thoseold guys hushed that kind of stuff up right away!
I know a lot of vets from my war who felt like we got used.Ive said that before and feel like we gave everything we could to a situation we didnt understand. We were the sons and daughters of the "greatest generation" and we wanted to honor their bravery and sacrifice and follow in their footsteps and did.
Your war might have been unneccesary just like our was-we just dont know. But what is different is now people support the warrior even when they dont agree with the war. If anything has changed since Vietnam its the recognition and gratitude of Americans and their willingness to know that the men and women who puts their lives on the line to serve in the military are a national treasure!

Thank you I agree completely. It is sad that finally now some people are starting to look back and say "oh shit! Maybe we should be thanking them as well." To me it is a shame. Most of my family were never in the military but I was raised that what we have is to be treasured and to be greatful to those that helped us get where we are.

Why don't you share you MOS with us?
Most my male family members served in the military and I am proud of their service.
Did you say you now work for the police department? Just curious if you are because most are trained in social services.

All Marines are trained 0311 first then other MOS'S.

I had
0331-machine gunner
6052-helo hydrualics
6113-CH53 mechanic
6172-crew chief
6119-maintenance chief
So if needed I would have been an 0311

There is other training, for me it was called Bits. It was for Nam training for 12 weeks. They had an area set up just like being there, village, booby traps and all. Guys that had been there trained you.

We had the same thing bier. It was stateside and also when you arrived in country. It was called 'P-training" as I recall. It amounted to a week when all you really did was get used to the heat, weapons were issued and they took us outside the wire (but not very far). Then we went to our units.

It's a grand thing isn't it? I'm what I feel like can be best described as a tweener,
went in at what was considered the end of the Vietnam era, served in what seemed like every backwater a** end of nowhere, with old breed Marines as the senior NCO's all guys that had done time in SE Asia. In my turn I spent a career, it wasn't untill recently though I was having problems accessing a customers location, met an old Marine on the loading dock, You just reconise it. I asked him where and when he had served, he told me, and I gave him a hug and said welcome home. The salty old bastard let me in the building and took me to the right management people that could approve access and the work we needed to get done.

Welcome home brother.
