I've been dying to do this, and even though it seems a little lame for a topic......
DREAM THEATER.....does anyone else out there think these guys are the freakin' greatest band ever? I bought "Time and a Word" when it first came out in 92' because they were playing "Pull Me Under" on the local radio.....but I just didn't "get them' at the time. I was exploring my dark metal side, and Dave Mustaine was my hero.....about 5 yrs. ago a buddy turned me on to "AWAKE", and I was hooked, I mean HOOKED. If you are a fan of prog-rock, metal, or just plain kick a** music, and musicianship, check these guys out!! If your a big metalhead, start with the album called "Train of Thought". I have some on my playlist, if you want a taste.

I'm terribly sorry but I can't narrow it down. I have sooo many favorites depending on my mood and the situation. Music is the universal language and love is the key. I think I heard that somewhere when I was a kid (yes, I know the song). Music is in my soul and beats with my heart in everything I do.

Here's a list anyway

Jimi because his noise and use of feedback brings out the primal nature.
Brian Eno for quiet times and inward retrospection
Who bombastic support for the kid in me
King Crimson improvisation and the ability to create anything
Flaming Lips Lyrics and Psychedelia in one package to wow my senses
Pink Floyd to remember those who have come before me
Beatles for breaking the ground and doing it right.

I could go on....

EXODUS!!! This Thrash Band has been assaulting our Ears for over 20 years, Had Original Singer Paul Baloff(R.I.P.)Die From a stroke, right after the Reunion Tour and Was planning new Album!! 2nd Vokalist Steve"Zetro" Souza fills in and leaves again
"Zetro" comes Back with a great album "Tempo Of the Damned" But leaves again due to "Same old B.S." From O.G.Guitarist Gary H! Then Rick H.leaves due to Drug problems etc... and when any other band would have called it quits, Gary H finds Killer Voks in Rob Dukes , New Guitarist Lee Altus(Heathen) and Drummer Extrordinaire Paul Bostaph(Forbidden, Slayer)Shovel Headed Kill Machine was an amazing album and Tour and now With The Release of "The Atrocity Exihibition" Exhibit A, (B comes in January 09)And akiller U.s. tour to supportit and i saw the show in Phoenix last January, and they were simply amazing!! Dukes is a great Frontman and they absolutely slayed!!The Band That will not die!! In the Words of the Late, Great Paul Baloff, Death To all Posers!! Posers Must Die!!

Hi all...

I was turned on to Dream Theater about the time you mention when Images and Words came out. I was in a now defunct record store [Coconuts]and they were playing it in the store. It definitely got my attention. I bought it and a live video of a concert in Japan, I think.

Anyway, John Petrucci's guitar work was/is phenomenal, Mike Portnoy's drumming ...stellar [I did however grow tired of his constant double bass usage, but he IS a great drummer].
John Myung .. very good player.

Derick Sherinian .... [Keys at the time, since replaced with another great keyboard player, Jordan Rudess] WOW ..This cat is unbelievable on synth/keyboards. I have since followed Sherinian with his solo releases and his Planet X projects with killer drummer Virgil Donati and guitarist Tony Macalpine.

James Labrie .... This is what killed the interest in Dream Theater for me. I just don't like his singing...period. Give me an instrumental DT track any day! Musically DT is great but vocally ...well ...I can do without Labrie! Just my opinion.

My favorite band is The Flower Kings from Sweden.

Headed by guitarist Roine Stolt, who coincidently collaborated with Dream Theater's Mike Portney in a side project called Transatlantic,he leads The Flower Kings to new heights in prog [progressive] rock with every release. Influenced by great prog bands of the 70's Stolt has come up with an amazing bunch of players to represent his message of music.

They have even recorded several Genesis covers of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Cinema Show, both Peter Gabriel era Genesis. Back when Genesis was good [pre-poppers] They were my favorite band...along with Yes, ELP and King Crimson.

Today ...it's The Flower Kings !! It's all there ...all the revitalized glory of progressive rock from the past utilizing contemporary studio technology while still maintaining the vintage sounds of the Mellotron, Hammond organ, Mini-Moog, stunning vocals/harmonies, epic song structures, and odd-time signatures.

I love complex music and this band proves they are the best at playing it. While the complexity is present, it is still very easy to follow and appreciate. Even beautiful at times.

Take care .. Pete Columbus Ohio

Some good bands mentioned.

For me however at this point, I would say Govt. Mule. Warren Haynes is one a** kicking guitarist and singer. Here's a clip from '99 back in the early days covering Black Sabbath's War Pigs. Enjoy.

And here's Govt. Mule covering "Just Got Paid". Killer version.

Covering "Mississippi Queen"
