4. fuck ford
5. I hate ford
6. ford sucks ass

Yes i hate ford as they are inferior to all american vehicles and btw this is strictly regarding these companies in the muscle car era. And my vote goes for Mopar specifically the Dodge charger...69 burnt orange white stripes 426 hemi mmmmmm hemi.

Alright fellas, school is in session.

As for the old muscle cars, I can tell you a thing or two about all the major muscle cars from back in the day. I actually work professionally during the day on automobiles. Half of our business is tuning race cars. We have a floor dynojet dynomometer that we use to baseline and tune extra horsepower and torque to the wheels. I've seem them all. We've done hundreds of dyno pulls, and have seen these cars in original form, and the highly modified full race versions.

The truth of the matter is that ALL of the car makers have earned bragging rights one way or the other. They ALL have built VERY fast cars. But, I think the Mopar Hemi's are hard to beat throughout the entire muscle car era.

The problem I have with the AC Bristol Cobra is that IT'S NOT A FORD. It's a HYBRID. Actually, Carol Shelby is the one that put the program together. He approached all the other car makers FIRST, wanting to get them to sponsor his Cobra project. Chrysler laughed at him, and so did GM. Ford decided to give him a shot, and supplied him with engines, transmissions, differentials, and several other critical parts. AC Bristol supplied the bodies and chassis. (AC Bristol was a car maker from England that was about to go under from financial difficulties from low sales). The first ones that Shelby put together had 289 hi perf small blocks, and were SUPERIOR to the later 427 Fords from '66 and '67. They were superior because they were more driveable. The 427's were so over powered, that they were very hard to control and crashed a lot. But the lighter small block powered cars were much better drivers and more controllable, equaling superior track performance other than straightaway accelleration and speed. My contention is that equal or superior performance would have been attained if ANY of the other car manufactures had sponsored Shelby besides Ford. But Ford deserves credit for giving the nod to Shelby to try out his idea and vision of these T/A type cars. No denying they are fast. They were faster than the Corvettes of the same model years.

However, Chevy had something for them in '68. But they quit building the AC's after the '67 model year. Had they continued, who knows? The L-88 powered Corvette Stingrays were seriously fast in '68 and I believe were built to answer Ford's call.

Mopar won regularly at NASCAR, and in Drag Racing. The "Funny Car" Class was started by Chrysler with their "altered wheelbase" cars from the mid '60's. Chrysler's engineers were some pretty sharp cookies because they knew that it wasn't just about having a powerful engine, but it was PUTTING IT TO THE WHEELS that mattered. They were pioneers with changing the center of weight over the wheels so the cars would hook up better with less loss of traction. They extended the front wheels forward about 16 inches, and the rear wheels forward about 8 inches or so on certain factory race models. They performed so much better in drag racing that they had to make a new class out of them. That was when the Funny Cars were born. They had to "alter" the wheelbase to put the massive ammounts of torque to the wheels to "hook up".

Like I said, they all have something to be proud of. But for me, personally, I have to pick either Dodge or Plymouth. Mopar performance. Solid backing from the dealer, and still around in massive numbers. You see as many Mopars at the race tracks as Chevys or Fords. Probably more in the Super Stock classes. And like I contributed in another thread recently, the Hemi is the platform to this day, for the 8,000 horsepower Top Fuelers that you see running in the NHRA.

That in itself ought to be a pretty big statement. 8,000 horsepower rules, and can be traced back to the Daytona 500 of 1964 where the first three 426 hemis ever built won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

My $.02 cents

Class is out. There will be a test on Friday...

Okay, why did Chevy and Mopar need to own or beat that 0 - 100 - 0 mph. record? It's chump change. If that's all your AC Bristol has by the way of bragging rights in the OVER ALL muscle car era, that's a small deal. I gave Ford and the AC (English) Bristol Cobras (Carol Shelby's idea, not Ford's) credit. But they are not the holy grail of the muscle car era. Show me a car that Ford actually BUILT, that could whoop a hemi powered Dodge or Plymouth of the same weight class, built during the same era, and I'll eat my words. And don't tell me about your "Boss" 429 mustangs with HEMI CYLINDER HEADS that they built trying to COPY Mopar so they could actually COMPETE against the Mopar HEMIS on the track. Those "Boss" 429's look good all chromed out on show cars, but in the real world of performance, they were DOGS! I don't want to hear about your "Thunderbolt" Fairlane 427 low rise, medium rise, hi rise, tunnel port, or SOHC's because they STILL couldn't touch a hemi powered Dodge or Plymouth built to run side by side against them. But, I am open minded and of course if you can perform magic and pull a Ford out of your hat that was capable of being a serious contender against a hemi powered Dodge or Plymouth of the same era, I'd love to hear about it.

I don't think you can. But go for it.

Jimiray....teach me ...please, I would love to be as involved with cars as you sound, the only work I've done is on a 72 chevelle ....I took out the bench seat and put in buckets and a floor shifter then took out the 305 and....never could find a 350 sniff I had to sell it before I'd completely made it an ss clone.(college can be a b*tch) made some money off of it though.

caley8s -

I'm flattered that you would say what you did about wanting to learn from me. Trouble is, this is an internet forum. To learn the things I know means spending 30 years in shops around cars of all types, picking up information and keeping it in your head. I can't pass on 30 years of experience and information like a computer downloading a file. It's just not that easy.

However, I am at your service if you have questions about something that I can help you out with, feel free to email me and I will help you out as I am able.

Have a great weekend

My own '69 Plymouth GTX 440 sixpack/727/3.91:1 Sure Grip. Highly modified 906 casting number cylinder heads, Mopar Purple Stick camshaft, steel crank, 11.5:1 compression ratio, frame connectors, 3,500 rpm stall torque converter. This car would run in the 11's all day. Not bad for a 4,000 lb. car. That is quicker than the E.T. of the much vaunted AC Bristol Cobra's through the 1/4 mile. Yours truly jimirayclapton in both pictures.
