This happened to two friends of mine... one married an Israeli guy who did not want to go into the army, and she
was sympathetic to his beliefs.
Another married a Brit who wanted citizenship and was willing to pay big bucks for the marriage, and my friend, a
teacher, wanted to make some money as well as do a good deed for friendship.
Two friends did not have an easy time of it, emotionally or otherwise. Things never went quite as planned,
as is so often the case. So I would be leery of "helping" someone with the easy way out.

I'd have to give this one a big no. I'm all about the sanctity of marriage, entering into it as a commitment to love one person for the rest of your life, not as an easy way to get citizenship. I can't really picture that sort of marriage ever being a happy one except in the movies.

Me too. I couldn't do it, and I've been asked. I had a guy I was seeing from Ireland many years ago who had run away so he wouldn't have to fight. He asked me to marry him so he could stay in the U.S., and I said no. He found someone else to do it, but we were never even friends again, because he said I betrayed him.

I casually date a guy who is a Brit, but he has dual citizenship. We have hypothetically talked about marriage and the status on his citizenship. I believe he would like to keep it the way it is, it might be more beneficial to him financially. He said he was going to look further into it. What does that mean, it's scaring me.

I couldn't. I've had friends like that before too, but I couldn't take any vow fraudulantly, not even for a friend. They'll have to go through imigration like everyone else.

Having to analyze peoples motives for them wanting to marry me is what makes me never want to marry again. If marriage is no more sacred than the souls of his shoes he can kiss my ***. Also, if marriage isn't considered a sacrament anymore, I might as well stay single, marriage dosen't even help financially anymore. It's a thing of the past unless your in a same sex relationship it seems.

In Canada, if you get caught, it is illegal under the criminal code, and carries jail time up to 5 years.

That's big for Canada, where manslaughter carries 3-10 yrs with 1/2 off for good behavior.

Besides, Canada lets just about anyone illegal in anyway.

No opinion if I would or not, depends on many factors, not the least of which would I still get a nice ring that I could keep and would the marriage be consumated.....

NO! It's not worth the drama. What happens if you meet someone you like/love and wants to marry you for real? You would be stuck with your friend and not the man of your dreams.

First thing first.

Marrying a USCitizen doesn't provide the foreigner with Citizenship but, only, with legal status as a Legal Allien / Resident...which is popularly known as being a "Green Card holder"...and the person can stay that way forever.

The Citizenship process starts much later (is not mandatory) when the Legal Allien reaches the amount of years holding the "green card" required by the government and he / she passes the required tests and physical examinations...Later on, the person has to go in front of the judge, recite the POA and to have, by said judge, the Citizenship granted.

Is a LOVELY ceremony.

BTW: Both status, Legal Allien and Naturalized Citizen, can be revoked

Now, to the business of answering your question: No, nobody should help a foreigner to obtain legal status by way of getting married.

NO! I heard a story recently about a man already married in his homeland of russia but is in the US, married a US citizen, stays married 2 years pretending to be the happy married couple and becomes a citizen, can divorce and then bring his own real family to light, wife and kids. Of course there is money exchanged, some to marry and end payment when all goes well. Yes if caught carries jail time. I say shame on the both of em. Even if I knew the person my answer is still no...there are right and wrong ways to go about things. jmo

I married an illegal because we had a child together. We tried to go through all the immigration process and its a big headache and causes to much stress not to mention a lot of money. We didnt get married just to fix his "papers". We never did get his status changed or continue with the process. We later divorced and that is extremely stressful. Do you know what its like trying to get divorce papers served to an illegal, cops show up at the door looking for such and such, that actual person answers the door and says such and such isnt home, cop checks i.d. of course such and such has "fake papers" using a fake id. JUST NOT WORTH IT!!!! You cant put a dollar sign on all the stress that comes with it. I dont care how good of friends you are, just not worth it.
