I have had severe depression for most of my adult life. It is unrelenting and getting to the point where medication doesn't help any more. I want to know if anyone has any first-hand experience with shock therapy (you or a friend or loved one) and if you think it is/was successful or not. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I saw a documentary on it a long time ago. Didn't seem like it worked.

A lot of times I haven't liked your comments, but I have to agree with you here 100%. My goodness I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!

If the meds have stopped working, it's because you still haven't treated the REASON for the chemical imbalance so your body adapted to the meds and threw things off further. I had the same thing happen to me over a decade of psychotropic use without counseling to treat the underlying issues.

There does come a point, which you have apparently reached, where medication no longer works because it was never intended as a stand-alone therapy. Our pharmaceutical culture has been using them as a stand-alone because it's easier to treat the symptom than the cause. Besides, the pharmaceutical industry has a vested interest in you NOT getting better and in you needing their medications for life, usually needing more and more and more expensive ones as you go through their cycles.

I hope you can find the help you need, but please don't fry your brain any more than the years of psychotropic medications already have.

I may not have the right comments but the thing I've found to treat my depression is pot not the Drug companies

Hey, with you there too.

However, I don't use it as a stand alone. I have had to work through a lot of issues from childhood. Because my insurance doesn't cover counseling alone without pharmaceutical treatment (and barely covers counseling after that) I have had to work through a lot of it on my own and with the help of really good friends.

The herb I mainly use for other things, but it does help me with depression rough spots that I hit every now and then (less and less often thankfully.)

Hey there, about shock treatment for depression...I have experience in that I was a therapist for over 12 yrs. All that I have seen professionally and personally is that I would advise very strongly against it. For several reasons, almost every person I have worked w/ or went through it, regret it and never seem the same again. If u want to chat further about it please feel free e mail me at kerrylynanne@[blocked] . Good luck and take care of yourself!!! There r people out here that know first hand what ur struggling w/ and don't ever give up ! When I was going through that kind of despair I kept it all inside , filled w/ shame and blaming myself!!! I applaud ur courage to get ur butt on line and ask everyone who is out here !!! Hip hip hooray...ur depression won't getcha today !!! Lol kerrylyn

I have heard about it and talked to people who have gone through it.
I too have had depression as far back as I can remember. I don't think I would want to go that route. Do they even use it any more? Most of the ones I talked to were the older generation and went through it years ago.
Right now I am doing ok with my meds and getting out going to Pulmonary Therapy 3 times a week. But this summer when I am again confined to the house...we will just have to see how well I do.

I have to agree with klondike about pot for the pain and depression...i am poss. bi-polar,i have been in 7 auto accidents, i have seizures and the meds cause severe depression, pot helps more with the pain and depression, but i have to be tested for the seizures, so i am not right now.....less side affects with pot too

Yeah, I found little help with seizure meds for my seizures nor depression meds for my depression. Cannabis (pot) takes care of both and helps me deal with my arthritis pain.

Thanks everybody, this thread makes me think real hard about it. For those of you who said pot helps you, that is fine but it is ILLEGAL and I for one don't want to risk going to jail for it.

Wait a minute--relax---you may want to try reading the labels of all the foods you eat--sugar--corn sweeteners--chemicals--MSG--preservatives--these are all poisons--they affect millions in various ways--everything from obesity to diabetes and mental disorders. You might seek a nutritionist who can explain healthy eating--as oppossed to years of poisoning yourself. It will take 2 or 3 months of a good diet to clean out your system--and then you will notice that you have energy--you sleep better--you interact with others better--you lose weight---the longer you eat a healthy diet--the better you get. i bet you are one of the people who eat crap and are sick from it. It is a proven fact--criminals have food allergies---especially preservatives--substitute sweeteners--MSG---they are just poisoned by the foods. I bet you can be helped with 6 months of trying a better diet. I mean really good food. Not just some good food.
