Hmmm...

Woonsocket, South Dakota gets it's name from Woonsocket, Scotland according to a South Dakota trivia book published a few years back. Settled mostly by Scottish settlers.

It didn't explain how Bucksnort Junction got it's name though

ooops! somehow I missed this page earlier.

So, can anyone tell me how Frog Station, Wisconsin; Rabbit Hash, Kentucky; Hell, Michigan, or if you are really brave, Intercourse, Pennsylvania got their names?

Is it legal to quote myself?

May I suggest Intercourse, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. switch names?

I think the reason for this request is obvious.

Intercourse, PA (from Wiki)

Intercourse was founded in 1754. The community was originally named Cross Keys, after a local tavern. Intercourse became the name in 1814, and there are various theories to explain this; one possibility is that the name derived from a race course, the "Entercourse", which was located along Old Philadelphia Pike just outside of town. The village website gives some other theories for the origins of the name.

"Another theory concerns two famous roads that crossed here. The Old King's highway from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (now the Old Philadelphia Pike) ran east and west through the center of the town. The road from Wilmington to Erie intersected in the middle. The joining of these two roads is claimed by some to be the basis for the town 'Cross Keys' or eventually 'Intercourse'.[1] A final idea comes from the use of language during the early days of the Village. The word 'intercourse' was commonly used to describe the 'fellowship' and 'social interaction and support' shared in the community of faith, which was much a part of a rural village like this one."[1]

While it may seem attractive to some to misconstrue "intercourse" in its more base sexual form, this has nothing to do with the origins of the village name.

Frog Station, WI

I wasn't able to find anything much, other than it is in fact a place. I did however run across a couple of different articles that discussed "Wisconsin Frog and Toad Survey".

Rabbit Hash, KY

From http://www(dot)preserveamerica(dot)gov/PAcommunity-rabbithashKY(dot)html
No one is sure of the derivation of the town's unique name, but many believe it came into use after a flood drove hundreds of rabbits from the riverbank—to become dinner for settlers.

Hell, MI

From the site http://www(dot)hell2u(dot)com/hell_history(dot)htm
Hell was first settled in 1838 by George Reeves and his family. George had a wife and 7 daughters – no reason to call it Hell yet… George built a mill and a general store on the banks of a river that is now known as Hell Creek...

The mill would grind the local farmers grain into flour; George also ran a whiskey still, so a lot of times the first 7-10 bushels of grain became moonshine.

In turn, horses would come home without riders, wagons without drivers….someone would say to the wife, where is your husband?

She’d shrug her shoulders, throw up her arms and exclaim, Ahh, he’s gone to Hell!”

In 1841 when the State of Michigan came by, and asked George what he wanted to name his town, he replied, “Call it Hell for all I care, everyone else does.” So the official date of becoming Hell was October 13, 1841...

And there ya go Hodag

Well, it is an auditory survey and from what I understand they surveyors routinely heard unexplained variations of croaking along the lines of "deep shit, deep shit, deep shit"

New Life, Centaur,

You folks are incredible!

Other than describing the size of the universe or the thought process of a liberal, which are both impossible, you two seem to be able to explain everything else!

Love you!

Thanks Hodag

Currently it's thought that the Universe is about 27.4 Billion Light Years in diameter and roughly spherical.

The thought processes of a Liberal?

The question for me is not one of how they think but do they think
