I've started a grape vine in florida and it is doing well. It is either a scuppernong or muscadine, not sure till it bares fruit. I've done plantings that will encourage pollenation. Will I need another vine for it to bare fruit? The vine is approx 2yrs old.
I have used coffee and fish fertilizer until my compost is ready. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I have lots of grapes. I just plant mine and forget them. We have a hot, warm climate (and clay soil, sadly) and
the grapes bear fruit after a couple years. Be sure to give your grape something to climb on, and you can also
prune it back in the fall. Commercial grapes are heavily pruned, but I do not prune mine other than to keep them
from taking over. I figure I am not a grape farmer, want them as a green barrier as much as for grapes. Love Concord
grapes, those soft sweet juicy grapes which are not sold much in markets. I have never fertilized nor sprayed my
grape vines, I have 4 of them, all about 4 years old now.

Thank you for the input. due to a home owner's assoc I can't have a trellis ( flying projectiles during the hurricanes. Forida ) I have trained them on a porch railing however it isn't quite as good as a trellis, and considerably smaller. Is there a way of stunting them by pruning prior to fruit bearing? Where along the vine do they produce the fruit? How large a diameter pot did you plant the ginger in? is 15 inch ok? Liked the between the sheets post Appreciate the help, you are most informative. UKE

Where on the vine does the fruit bear? do yo think they can be pruned back during the growing season without harming them too much? My problem is with a home owner assoc. ( not gardeners ) Can't have a trellis even over a porch. ( projectiles during a hurricane )
Here is a pers. question is a 15 inch diameter pot enough for the ginger? Liked the BTS post. Thanks for not spraying it all helps. Uke

uke i am not trying to start an argument but i would like to ask a favor of you. If you grow those grapes and they make fruit that in that humid climate don't rot without the use of fungicides, please let me know. i live in NC which is much fairly less of a humid climate than florida and we CANNOT keep grapes from rotting without the use of a fungicide.

I made mistake of planting "wine grapes" on the front fence 4 or 5 years ago, now bearing lots of grapes, but
not edible! Wine grapes mean just that, as opposed to "table" grapes for eating. We did grow them, concord,
in Kentucky. We put up wire fences in an open area and they did quite well, and we had one on a trellis
in front of the house, too. No one ever fertilized or pruned, yet we had plenty of grapes for eating and jelly,
and Kentucky is also a humid climate. California of course is dry, and we grow most of the wine and raisin grapes
in the country, all over the state. Some areas too hot for wine grapes, and that is where raisin grapes are grown.
The Valleys, Napa and Sonoma, where wine is THE industry are also very beautiful, rolling hills, mild climate,
and I hope you grape growers will visit some time. Good hiking country and lots of hot spring resorts over there,
too. About a 2 hour drive from my city. Some fine nurseries over there, one that specializes in dogwoods
and Japanese maples, another in roses.

Slow to answer, cause i dont consider my self expert yet..have eleven acres of grapes mostly vignols and concord..some simple rules that i have learned..
first, never over feed them fertilizer, if they are stressed slightly they produce more sweet grapes..dont know why but they do(fellow in St. James missouri taught me that one)keep em green but hungry

Second..Ph is everything, find which Ph is best and get your soil there..if you need lime use lime rock at the base and never lime again for 15 years as the rock slowly melt..i went to gravel pit and got pea sized gravel and placed it a scoop at a time..now saves dollars and time..

Third keep the grass and vegitation out of the grapes..use roundup on a sponge and keep all the grass etc out of the vines..slows bugs and disease..

Fourth for small plots Wallmart has all ya need..your biggest enemy is the viral and bactireal kinds of things..a good rose spray will do wonders..make sure your grapes are not sprayed when the lil grapes about the size of pin head appear...need em to pollunate..

fifth, double trelis them pups, on your porch railing use a good grade of at least number 12 wire and put a trelis under them suspended from the porch..no violation there..double crop area and air can circulate and help fight viruses etc..

Sixth birds are not your friends, robins and cardinals and any berry eating bird are the very worst culprits..good cat will settle that

Seventh and final learn how to prune..local usda folks may even have classes you can go to..

good luck i love em and the sweet smell as they ripen...

and almost fogot, when the grapes are set, get a viral spray inside the clusters before they close..stops the loss of bunches from disease....and never ever use sevin on grapes that have set..you will loss about half the crop to drop..it is what we use to thin grapes that are toooo heavy with fruit..our goal is 6 to 8 good clusters per vine..it adds up when you plant to 1784 vines to the acre...

I planted 2 grape plants near my back yard fenceline to hide the garbage between the fences from the buisiness behind me.. First year they started but the rabbits chewed them to the ground the first winter. They somehow survived and shot up again.. No grapes but vined out more than the first year. Rabbits still tried eating them but didnt get them all. Next year I got some grapes to blossom but none made it to my lunch bucket. Learned Grapes grow on 2 year old wood.. not newest growth. They have done a good job spreading and hiding the buisiness trash.. but I need to figure out how to keep the grapes on the plant also(need help also). I was going to try making stuffed grape leaves but thought it was to late in the season for the tender leaves you are supposed to use. Next year maybe.
