It was 1978. I was 18, of legal age to drink and go to bars. A friend called, said he's going to a bar in Jamesburg, invited me along, and would pick me up, since my house was on the way there.

The name of the bar was Emmett's. It was on some never-ending dirt road in Jamesburg. We went in without being carded, if I recall.

It seemed like a routine bar, with a couple of pool tables and some pinball machines.

After a while, a crowd started to form at the stage. Some bar band was supposed to play there that night, and the crowd kept building and getting larger as stage time drew near.

I wasn't much of a drinker, so I bought a Michelob and nursed that one bottle just about all night.

The lights went down, the band came out on stage, and...it changed my entire life.

The name of the band was Twisted Sister.

To this very day--and I'm just a few months from turning 50--I've never seen anything as energetic and electrifying as Dee and the Boys. Not Bruce Springsteen, not Bon Jovi, not Aerosmith, not the Rolling Stones...NOBODY.

And that night was just the beginning, because several of my friends were there that night, and we all had the exact same reaction.

We followed Twisted Sister, became SMF's (that's what their fans were called--you can figure out what SMF stands for pretty easily if you don't already know), and went to see them whenever they were anywhere in the central Jersey area.

We saw them at Zaffee's in Piscataway, Mother's in Wayne, and Sgt. Pepper's in...hell, I don't even remember where the hell that place was. But they always were at their best, for some reason, at Emmett's.

They kept getting better and better each time we went to see them. But eventually, my friends and I drifted apart as we went our separate ways to college. I went to Purdue in Indiana, and became a disk jockey at the college radio station. I had a couple of Twisted Sister 45's, and always played them on my show. I remember saying in 1979, on the radio, "This is a band from Long Island. They're going to be the biggest band in the world within five years. They're called Twisted Sister."

Dammit...I was right. Anyway, time has passed...Emmett's is now a family restaurant. I'm bald. Twisted Sister made it big, broke up, because a Whatever Happened To sidenote, and has regrouped.

For those of you near my age, do you have fond memories of bar bands like me? Where did you go, who did you see, and what are those bars now?

Jd

well it was called Joint in the Woods--now it was replaced by The Parsippany Tara Hotel/ sheraton now i believe...on that grand opening nite was David Bowie and his group back in the 70's--i stood within 15 feet from him--

If you remember "Bobby Miranda and the Happenings"--"See you in September" he was from Paterson and made his living in Wayne growing up playing around that area--today he still plays all types of dance music all over the tri state area supposedly...

when i was 18 and living in North Jersey, i had to travel to upstate NY or the Bronx, NY as the drinking age then was 18 in NY and 21 in NJ--Marshmellow in New City, NY owned by two former NY Mets baseball players was good as was the Starboardside in the Bronx in the 200 blocks--I ever met Frankie Valli's late daughter in that place...

Mother's is no more around in wayne

Bruce Springsteen, Bobby Bandiera, Ed Manion and LaBamba at the Stone Pony in 1985.I think Bruce still stops in where Booby is playing, I know Jon Bon Jovi does as Bobby plays with his band on tour.--check out his website for places--bobbybandiera.com. Bobby started with the band Holme which plays at DJ's in Belmar now.

I have very fond memories of a band called "Fresh" in the late 1970's. They would play at the Shipwheel in Brielle every Thursday night and we would dance the night away! Now ... I like the "Holme Band" ... they play at the shore on a regular basis. Another fun band to dance to.

I used to see twisted sister at the arrow lounge in Scotch Plains. I guess I wasn't a SMF. I have no idea what that stands for.
My favorite bar band was the Good Rats. They released a few albums, opened for major acts at MSG but never became big.
Finaly someone that remembers Joint in The Woods. I was to young to see Bowie at the Grand opening. I am green with envy. I did see Kiss there a week after there first album came out.
Thanks for the memories

The Good Rats...I had their album From Rats to Riches. They had a popular regional hit song called The Garden State Parkway Boogie.

If you don't know what SMF is, it's the name given to Twisted Sister Fans.

If you don't know what it STANDS for, I'll try to give you a hint without actually typing it.

It rhymes with Sick Brother Trucker.

As a sign painter down the shore, I did a ton of signs for bands that were appearing in the bars and clubs. My most memorable were the promotional signs at Martells when the 4 lovers were playing--you know them as the 4 Seasons....after "Sherry" hit the charts. The best bands I remember appeared at the Osprey in Manasquan---the Ships Wheel Inn in Brielle---The Hoffman House in Point Beach--- Joey Harrisons in Ortley--the Chatterbox in Seaside----and the Headliner in Belmar. No one can ever top the fun at Jimmy Byrne's Sea Girt Inn---the Byrne brothers were the entertainment--a piano and drums and excellent vocals.

If I'm not mistaken, the Four Seasons named themselves after a Jersey bowling alley, am I correct?

As for Purdue...I loved every minute that I was there, and I loved Indiana...but I'm a Jersey Boy, right down to my DNA.

YUP--they took the name of the alleys that were in Union NJ. When they played Martells, they were a lounge act--the style that everyone remembers was only done once in a while--they had a wide variety of songs that they did in the early years-- actually very entertaining and popular. They had a drummer who had a set that he stood up to play--it was called a C*CKTAIL SET-- the old promotional photos had that set pictured and it became popular with some other groups in the area at that time. Other lounge acts that appeared there never had the draw of the 4 Lovers--and they did many surprise, unadvertised appearances after they changed their name and made it to stardom. Martell's was the best break for the group in the mid 60s.----and they never forgot it. They were a "class act"---always very accessible to the crowds--signed autographs at anytime.

Yes--Jersey was better 30 years ago. I loved the Royal Manor South!! What a bar--Rock room--disco room-even had a deli. But Jersey now is still better than other states. I am in Georgia where-yes the taxes and hosing are cheap but there's nothing to do--there is no place like NJ. Small state that has everything. Soon as this house sell-Jersey here I come!!

I thought he was the Geator with the Heater. Maybe he was both. I've heard of him and have read about him. Years ago, I found a book in a Florida library about famous DJ's. He was mentioned, although I read the book so long ago, I don't recall the name, or anything further about him.

It wasn't just music DJ's, actually. The book also mentioned John Gambling and his Rambling with Gambling show, and, of course, the legendary Jean Shepherd.

Since both were on WOR-AM in NYC, my guess is the author(s) were either affiliated with that station in some way, or else were partial to it for whatever reason.

Me...I grew up listening to Dan Ingram and Harry Harrison.

The New Left Blues Boogie Played at Stockton State College events and pubs in the surrounding area in the late 70's and early 80's. They played all kinds of good music to drink and dance to. Their rendition of Sly Stone's Everyday People was a crowd favorite.
The best time of my life.
