What type of area do you live in? Hot or cooler? Depending on where you live is what you will want to grow. Long grain does better in hot areas then cooler and short to medium grain does better in temprate areas. You will need lots and lots of water. If you grow them in "paddies" (standing puddles of water) You will not realy need to weed them IF grown in a paddy. You transplant them into the paddies when they are 1 - 6 week old seedlings. You also get a higher yeild growing in a paddy. A paddy is only a few inches deep.

It is hard to tell you exactly how to grow it because it all depends on how much rain you get, the temprature and many other varibles.

hey at least i have a start now. I was beginning to think no one could answer me lol.
i live in the foothills of nc. I am in zone 7a according to most maps a few have us listed in 6b. so if i understand you seed them in trays then transplant into the patty? i thought they were seeded directly to the ground(guess you learn something every day lol. in the patty you said the water would only be a couple of inches deep, is this throughout the growth process or do you let the water off as the rice ages?

thanks for your help maybe i might have a chance yet.

Duck hunting buddy of mine comes from Stuttgart arkansas..lots and lots of rice..he drills the seed into a dry paddy, then floods it to soak it and give enough water to grow..drain and harvest..you can do the chinese method but that seems a lot like make work if ya got any kind of seed drill..google up rice farming and most of the answers you need will be there..if ya can grow good hay grass you can grow good rice..

you keep the water through out the growth process. Another thing you can do is plant them in a dry patty then when they are a week-six week old seedlings you can flood the paddy.
