Hi,
I have a 73 Buick Rivera, (Boat Tail) in the garage, it runs, but needs a complete paint job. There is no rust on it, and it is in black primer. All of the chrome and bumpers are off of the car, inside panels have been removed. I have all of the parts and trim. The drivers side door needs to be aligned, and it will probably need to be sanded before painting. I was wondering about how much would it cost to have it painted, and put back together. Oh and the color I would like it to be painted is Black, it is has black interior. The original color was black. Let me know what you think I should be paying for this job.
Thanks

depending on the shop and how much prep work, $500 and up, if you can reinstall all the chrome , you will save money , if you want it done right and they do all the work , plan on bout $2500

I guess, that is pretty resonable. I had someone tell me $7,000, just to paint it. And that didn't include putting all the parts back on the car. IL must be higher than CA for complete paint jobs.

yellow pages, body shops, restoration specialists, call for pricing. You're asking for a range that can be from $500 for Maaco to THOUSANDS for top notch paint specialists. It all depends what you're looking for and wanting to spend. Painting is an odd field. You get what you pay for.

Depends on if you want a show car, or if you just want a nice driver, And also the overall condition of the car before work begins

If you are "restoring" the car, you don't want to go cheap. Most "restore" paint jobs have at least 2-3 coats of paint--or more. Don't count on a Mako job lasting very long, unless you have done some really good prep.
Decide how much the car would be worth after you restore it versus how much you are willing to put into it.
A 73 is not an Antique car, but it is considered a Classic. It's probably not really a sought after item. Check the internet for comparison.
It also depends on what you want to use the car for. If it's for "show", a lot of people put big bucks into their cars.
I love older cars. They are easier to work on and parts are cheaper. For what you got, you could put a brand new motor and trans in it, and basically have a brand new car.
Something a lot better than the crap they have now, and a heck of a lot cheaper.
Then just drive it.

lives to ride
My husband did most of the work on the car. He use to do body and fender, for many many years. He bought this car from one of his customers, and drove it, home. He wanted to restore the car and bring it to cruise nights. He and my son pulled the motor out and did some work to it, they had a mechinic replace, then stripped car down to the bare metal, did the body work (only some minor dings). The car really didn't have very much rust on it, then put it in primer. He never had a chance to finished it, he passed away. So this is why I'm just wondering, how much I should spend. I just think that it is just a lot of money to spend, if the car isn't worth putting the dollars into it, If I were to sell it. I had restoration shop owner come to the house and tell me that I would cost $7000, just to paint it. and then tell me that the car was only worth about $13000. And to put all the chrome, door panels, bumpers, etc. back on the car would be an additional charge, plus the cost of the car, and the money already invested in it. I'm just thinking that maybe I should just sell it as is, and just to recover what is already invested. OH well Decisions, Decisions.

wow, im not paying that. i am doing all my body work myself, and am investing in about $50.00 for some black primer. ill drive around with that till i buy $150.00 of good auto paint. then for $200.00 ill have a complete proffessional paint job.i already have the compressor and spray guns. i just put the bed liner paint in the bed. that stuff works very good. one quart did my tail-bed. only i didnt mix it enough ,first time i worked with it, so im going to go over it again. but that stuff looks great.

if you dont have any real interest in the car, go ahead and sell it as is. the time getting it fixed up and the money , and then you have to find a buyer that wants it. those boat tails have a fan club online that you could probably find a buyer or at least more relevent advise .

There are a lot of factors that determine the cost of a full body paintjob.
1. Parts and materials: this includes sanding paper, masking paper, wax and grease remover, dish soap, primer, etc
2. Labor: I'm assuming this doesn't need much of expiation
3. Type of paint system: Base coat, Basecoat Clearcoat, Tricoat, Candy apple, etc
4. Length of deadline (if you choose to set one)
5. Is it frame on or frame off restoration
There are more factors, but these are just what I can think of off the top of my head

First thing to ask yourself: how much is this car worth to YOU?
Second thing to ask is: daily driver, grocery getter, or when the grandkids visit?
Third thing to ask: what kind of budget are you willing to put aside?
Fourth thing to ask: what quality of paint do you want?
The guys here have some good ideas on price: $1500 to $7000.
A good idea is to get all the names of classic cars, american or import, and try to find respective clubs for those cars and go check out the paint and body forums of those clubs. You may find one in your area that you were not aware of that is trusted among those club members.
Let us know what the progress is. Sounds like a cool project driver.
