Black angus are easy calving with lower birth weight and fast growing on good pasture. A lot of people use black angus bulls to cross with other breeds for easier calving and quick growth.

yes i know that about angus all i am saying is a lot of people have been brainwashed into thinking that black angus or angus cross is the only type of cow to have in the reg market thats true they are worth the most money but in the meat market farmers get better results by crossing angus with other breeds like hereford and brama and beefmaster type cows so thats all i'm saying that all black in the meat market is not the way to go sounds like we are on the same page lol

The angus people have just done a better job of selling themselves with the certified angus beef program. That said around here black calves bring 10 to 25 cents a pound more. So other breeds may be as good or even better but I make more money with black calves. I don't have a angus cow herd but I use black angus bulls so my calves turn out black or black whiteface.

Am laughing oh so laughing. Been discussed around the supper table from the business side alot..No i dont think they are the best..yess they have gone along ways in the marketing thing..right down to it the bulls are a little meaner than their big cousins, the cows just a bit more ornery..I got rid of them about ten years ago..we now sell papered (pedigree is the money thing) polled hereford..cross one of those to the white breed and they are off and big quick, marbel well and yup taste good...also we dont do bulls, just heifers in the show ring..ya can buy the bull by the squirt easier than raise it..have fun with them spunky lil black things, i ran out of patience for em..

The black Angus breed was small, that I remember . Didn`t hold up in real cold winters either. Herefords were the sturdy breed ,then short horn ,then polled . Now the black critter is as big as most other breeds .Charolais were rare and who wanted them? They were so big all you could breed them with was another Charolais. It`s all marketing . Feed out 4 different breeds, cut the hide off and I doubt you could tell, if it was a different breed.I`m hungry lets eat!
It`s just what you want to look at .Well I can`t say that I guess .The uglest ole cow I had threw looking the best calves I ever had.

Where I am in Alabama seems to be all kinds of cows, mostly crosses though and mostly crosses with black angus. My grandmother when she was raisin cows preferred a hereford bull because of temperment.
Where I was in Florida the huge thing was Limousin cattle. They were HUGE! The people I knew were big time into this with some high dollar cows and bulls. They swore that all around it was the best breed.

I bought Simmental cows one time .Big ole things! Gentle though! Really like working with them and then I used a reg. limosine Bull for a few years .That was a nice mix I thought .Big,solid healthy mix.But they all went red in color and I liked the white and fawn color, just me .

Black Angus sure aren't small anymore. The average size of register black angus is bigger than the average size of registered simmental. That came from 40 years of breeders chasing bigger is better. Big weaning weights and yearling weight may sound good but hasn't worked out so good for the commercial guys. Frame size is on the way back down.

Well if the black ones are getting larger than they are hybrid along the way somewhere, what is the mix to bring them back to registered or is it just the color..prettiest lil calves ya ever saw where the jersey calves we had when we milked..oh man they were so cute ya wanted to take one home for the yard..but now there is a mean bull if one ever walked the earth..that dairy bull is just mean..god speed on them black cows, we in the hereford fold are having no problems and dont think we will..and that big ole bull still comes to the fence to have his head rubbed...god love em..

And this will cause alot of angst..before the horsey people took over you could almost double the price of a 800 pound steer with an 800 pound horse..and who says they dont eat good..had it in europe when in the army aint half bad, sweet, and tender....

I to was a Polled Hereford Farmer, Back in the ealy 1980's my stepson Shocked the show world at the time with his Reserved Grand Chapion Hereford steer. It had ben years at that time sence a Hereford got picked that high. I guess I don't know that one has sence?
But herefords are capable of high quality if you can get it all brought together in breeding. Just to few doing it today with herefords as they cross them up just for calf sale rather than a pure Quality line for show & sell. But to me if you want herefords pick the best and they will treat you right and use AI breeding too.

If you are raising a few for the freezer or to sell to friends any beef breed will work. There isn't a nickles difference in them. But if you are in the business of raising feeder calves, the calves (which is what you are selling) better have a black hide. At least that is how it is in the PNW, the northern rockies and plains. There certaily are regional differences. In parts of the southeast eared cattle (brahmans and brahman crosses) top the market but here they get a 50% discount. The fact is that black and black baldie calves bring 10 to 25 cents more in this area. That is $60 -$150 more on a 600 pound steer calf. That adds up pretty fast on a couple hundred head of calves. If you are seriously in the cattle business you need to know what sells best in your region.

Yes in the market Black baldies are king & have ben for years $$$$$$ is what counts.
70 years a go Hereford was king and be for that for nearly 100 years but did not promote the ai breeding & marketing as did the angus folks, and they won.
I'm just saying Hereford can do it but your in a river of black for shure.
Just to say though Shorthorns will never go away, they have ben popular forever it seems.
Years ago it was shorthorns & a hereford bull, today the bull is more often angus. But some farms and pastures still like shorthorns as any.

Well as was said earlier, yes i agree the stockyard dollars are in the black or white faced fat calves, and steers..the money is in the breeding stock and the development of breeds that blend well with the angus..find most of my good to grade heifers go to the rancher or farmer running about a hundred head who know what they want in a cow..the steers we sell are to a couple swanky steak houses who also buy a neighbors shorthorn because of how "BLOCKY" and well marbled they get..the small slaughter house that buys them is always amazed we did not grow many of them to bull..well not much money for a big boned bull which kills angus cows on birthing..but we continue on..figure to get the grand national some day(good dream isnt it)..

The awnser to your question is YES!
My Father was the North Western spokeman for the American Aberdeen-Angus Association but in the 50's and a pure breed producer his whole life. Like he use to say, try to argue it with a usda prime cut on your plate after you had just one bite. CAN'T BE DONE!

So if you had several USDA graded Prime steaks on your plate from steers that were fed in the same pen. You could tell the angus from say hereford? Or maybe shorthorn? I don't think so.

And as I said or inplied it is all about how they are fed and how they grade, because once you peel the hide off you can't tell the difference.
And approximately half of my herd of 50 commercial cows are black angus and both of my bulls are black angus. But it is not because I believe they are better beef or that they preform better (because they don't). It is because when I sell the calves they bring an extra dine or two.

I don't think they are any better, but I have to agree with Cowboy. Just took 6 to the sale barn 4 red and 2 black. All were in good shape and the black ones brought more per pound than the red ones. This may just be in my area, but it has been this way for several years. I can't tell the difference have taken both colors to the slaughter house and they taste the same to me. Finish them out right and its all good.

I bred Registered Texas Longhorns in PA. People don't usually think of them as a meat breed but once they taste the meat they love it.It's also very healthy since it's naturally lean. And you also get those neat skulls to hang on your wall.

lol longhorns have better meat than most people give them credit for but two problems with them 5 times out of 10 they are spotted and produce spotted calves and they take a big cut in price 2 they average cow only produces 40% of its own body weight 5 out of 10 longhorns are under 750lbs thus most longhorn and longhorn cross calves dont weigh more than 250 to 290 at weaning age but on the bright side you can buy them cheap and they last longer than most other breeds do so they have pros and cons like all other cows do lol

Cowboy 305 is 100% correct. Once the hide is off and it is on your plate...it is still a beef steak. Hard to tell the difference in your breed at that point (Good morning Cowboy) My herd is what I like to call a Heinz 57 but mostly Angus. We are using a Hereford bull this time to produce the black baldy or bronc face calves (whichever you like to call them) which are the buyers choice at the auction. I do also run an Angus bull with part of our herd also. The Angus tend to be easier calvers verses other breeds such a Simmental. Hope you have a great day. Lucky me I have today off. After a quick trip to the doctor, I get to go the cattle auction.
Planned that nicely didn't I? Save me a seat Dave!

when it comes to a purebred operation angus is the best or all black lol in the commercial meat market your best crossbreeding angus or a black bull with white face cows or a charolais bull with red cows and red and white cows i once had a black bull that was limosine he threw good calves but they were around 335 pounds or less at weaning my charolais calves weigh 350 to 555 at weaning so thats what works for me to each there own lol

Blacks and Whites always bring the best price Ive noticed as well..here in California.
Just curios... is the longhorn meat dry? without fat? I like marbling in the meat...is there any with longhorn?
Im interested in butchering a smaller animal..as I have no kids here anymore..and less to feed...I cant eat a whole angus steer quick enough..lol
Some are even looking into the minis for personal butcher beef..

I have got some where around 350 of those beautiful black Angus. Wouldn't have anything else. They are the easiest to work with, the best mothers, and match up comparably to anything else when you talk about days to market verses amount of feed per pound. I don't have any of my pictures for online but they are a beautiful site to behold.
