Is anybody here a Linux user and if so, can you tell me anything about it? I bought the 9.0 version of Red Hat when it came out (and I know it's been discontinued) and tried to install it on a backup computer. It killed the hard drive. I've since bought Umbututu (I think it is) and the Linux imitation of Window XP, and can't seem to install them. I used to be in a Soviet camera club on line and the other members sung the praises of Linux up and down. But it's difficult to install and it seems you have to be much more of a tech head to install and use it than you have to be with Windows. I'm not a big Windows fan -- it crashes a lot, is very undependable and costs a fortune if you start adding accessories. Linux looked like a better choice, but I'm having a hard time. Help anybody?

Very hard to clear ur hard drive of linux products.. going to have to format the drive and might have to do it more than once.. then when you go to load microsoft back on it may take one or two time with another format in between .. for busness purposes linux is good because of hackers... but need to know what ur doing with it for sure. oh yeah almost forgot.. also right after your done formating (in dos) you need to do an F disk..
after fdisk is done re-format.. then reload os ...

You can write the hard drive back to binary, if the above advise does not work, Most hard drive manufactures will have software you can download to write the drive to binary which is better then formatting.

he has different version of it available. For any first time linus user, this is the best one to learn on.

If you paid for Ubuntu you got ripped off, you can get the disks free, the guy who wrote will send you 10 disks for free or you could have downloaded it free at www.linux.com

Why are you buying these open source operating systems? You can download them and install them for free.

I have been using linux for about 2 years now. It is a good way to learn about your computer and how OSes work in general. Ubuntu has been recommended to me several times, but I have chosen to go the Arch-Linux route because I have old hardware.

I have also used Fedora (the free end of redhat) which was a little heavy for my poor T22.

At any rate, as a n00b that has learned things the hard way here is a little advice that I found particularly useful:

1) Use the wikis. Most open source operating systems have a large number of people online who are happy to help you and there has probably already been someone with the same problem you have. Google it, search the wikis and email people who say they want to help. They really do.

2) Before you try to install, wipe your harddrive (you do have back-ups don't you?) and format with at least one partition for your operating system (generally doesn't have to be very large). That way when you get too frustrated or bored with knowing what you're doing, you can switch operating systems without having to wipe the harddrive again.

3) Try dual boot. Since a lot of things that are fun to do require a MS operating system, you might want to keep MS around to do them. This is best done by making another partition to hold MS (again relatively small) and using linux for everything but your gaming, etc, whatever you need MS for.

4) If you aren't sure if you like a particular linux OS, try a live distribution. These are often available on CD/DVD, but can also be done on a thumbdrive. Check around, ask on the forums to see if there is a live distro that you can try before you "buy" (ie. install - since you should only pay for the media if you buy - unless you want the support).

Finally, whether you use MS or linux, I wholeheartedly advise you to install Firefox.

Good luck. I will be happy to help where I can - it's that whole karma thing.

I've been using Linux since about 1996 and find that most of the things I do except gaming are best using it.
Some tips:
Always install windows first as MS will wipe out the MBR during install when making a dual boot system, then let the installer for your favorite distro guide you through the install of Linux. Being a KDE man I won't use Ubuntu but have tried Kubuntu.

I've found it best to not pre-make partitions, let the installer do it.

Ya never have to use Fdisk to take Linux off, it's loaded into memory and all you need do is to remove the partitions while you have it booted, use the recovery portion of the install CD to restore the MBR to a windows only MBR. Then if you want you can use disk manegment in XP, 2000 or Vista to make another partition for windows only.

Two of the best distros I've found are Mandriva and PC LinuxOS.
Both are loosly based on Red Hat and both are great. Mandriva is a bit better than PCLOS for those without a broadband connection and both are free to download.

Hope this helps and if any have questions I'd be glad to give my opinion of an answer.

hmmm...

If your just wanting to play with linux you can download a LIVE cd version. What that means is: it's the linux os on one cd, you just boot to the cd and it loads the os. No mess'en with the hd what so ever.

I personally prefer SUSE linux over all others... however, I do have XP, Kubuntu, and SUSE loaded on my pc.
