You can- but it would eat all your files. I'd recommend getting an external HDD to back them up on.

What do you hope to gain by switching from a 32bit OS to 64bit one? Ability to use more memory? You will have to clean install and find 64bit drivers for everything.

there aren't a lot of programs that are 64 bit compatible.

If you partitioned your HDD in the first place, you shouldn't have to worry about reinstalling that much.
I would just reinstall, put 64 on there after you back up your shit.
As I've told others, put 40 or 50 gigs on C, rest on D.
Install any programs on D instead of C.
Backup C onto D using Acronis, or something of the like.

You can always run VMware if you need to run programs that aren't compatible.. however, VMware doesn't run 3D stuff that great if at all yet (they are working on it) in Windows 7, but it will with older versions of Windows.

Problem solved.

I see your a big fan of multi partitions? You still have the same problem with installed applications. Your registry is still on the istallation partition and if you re-install the OS you still need to re-install all the applications!

Of course you do, but the point is that you don't have to worry about backing up your data before you do it, especially after you tell the OS to move all your "music", "documents", etc folders to your D drive.

Also, with Acronis, you can back up your stuff once a week or as often as you'd like, and you don't have to worry about reinstalling crap.

Back up important files well that's been covered.

Another thing get all your ducks in a row driver wise you can have the baddest rig on the block and that 4 yr old tv tuner card you tossed in will bite you in the a** due to no 64 bit driver.

One more thing to consider before jumping to 64bit there is absolutely no reason for it unless you have more than 4 gb of memory installed on the system in question.

The boost to be gained are minimal on a 32 and 64 bit OS running 4 gb of memory or less.

just a heads up.

Actually it's more than 3 gigs.

It's good to have 64 over 32 any day, both for the power and also for future upgrades of RAM.

why not create a dual boot system? I am currently running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, Windows Vista ultimate 32bit, and windows Server 2008 32 bit. Most everything written above is true, unless your are using more that 3 gigs of ram, it might not really be much of an increase in proformance. Most driver issues can be worked out, as I found using 32bit versions on some programs..(i noticed some web based players do not have 64bit compatability so I use the 32 bit versions of those programs.Of course you will need to back everything up, and create separate partitions for each OS. It's easy, but it can be done.Another thing, I would definately re-install all applications. It's better to run a clean install when installing a new OS. I'm fixing to put Windows 7 enterprise on my system right now, will see if the quad boot works.
