Hey everybody,
I bought a Gateway MA7 laptop off of ebay.
It has windows vista ultimate on it.
It asks for a password once you boot up and I don't have it.

I wrote the seller however the seller states they don't know the password.
What really pisses me off is that the specs this guy gave me must be b.s. on it if he didn't

have the password to access the computer.

Now i'm sure I can fight him and go through ebay and paypal to get my money back however I got this computer on the cheap and I don't want to go through all the b.s.

SO. . .

Aside of wiping the harddrive completely is there a program i can use that will reset the password or present it?

Thanks

You could try booting into safe mode and when the welcome page comes up there should be 2 accounts to log into. One for the administrator and one for the user account. Log onto the administrator account and dont put in a password. Leave it blank and hit enter. Many times when these PCs are setup the admin password is left blank because they expect the user acoutnt to be the administrator account and just leave it blank. now once you are in, then go to user accounts and adjust user acounts and password acordingly. If this doesnt work, I have a tool that can reset any password on any windows PC. Email me and I will show you where to down load the tool and how to use it.

Thanks rock I hit you up with a private message.
If anyone else can chime in how to unlock this that would be great as well.

Well these are the specs on it. It has a broken left latch and I don't know to much about computers. I paid 150.00 plus 20.00 to ship.
I plugged in the model number to the gateway site and this is what I came up with.
Want to know if I got a decent deal for the price in your opinions. .
Reason I bought it is because the guy said it had 4 gb ram and a 288gb harddrive. Both were false.
So here are the specs. . .

Gateway doesn't even list an MA7 on their website. Are you absolutely sure that this is the series? I don't know about Gateways, but HPs have a jumper on the motherboard that you switch to erase the password so you can boot and enter your own password.

I just tried to use ophcrack but the only think that came up was 'not found' when i ran the scan.

I may end up pulling it apart if all else fails and try watch you have mentioned. Thanks for chiming in!

Try downloading the user manuals from the Gateway website. They may tell you exactly where the jumper might be and what pins to switch it to.

he said it was a laptop. won't be easy to take apart and i don't think they have jumper pins. but i could be wrong.

i think you have a legitimate complaint if you backed up the information regarding the advertised sell. since he obviously sold you the wrong computer as what was advertised. but i don't think you went wrong with the price.

in all honesty. you'd be better off wiping it clean anyways. i'd rather have my own stuff on my computers and not what's been loaded from the previous owner. unless they've got programs you might want.

nothing lasts forever though. and windows is something that don't last for ever either. eventually your gonna get messed up enough that some time down the road. you'll be forced to do a wipe out anyways.

look for manufacture cd's if they can be ordered. they don't cost much. defenitly not your bottom line with the price you into it already. you'll still come out ahead.

compaq cd's cost $15. it comes with all the software. don't know what gateway charges. but $15 is much cheaper then buying your own windows. and having to download all the drivers and software just to make it work.

have you tried hitting the cancel button. not always is there a password set. sometimes just hitting the cancel button windows will continue booting up.

motherboards and windows are two seperate items. motherboards with passwords prevent a user from getting into the bios. not from booting up windows. that's seperate.

Gateway has some decent information online, unfortunately they state that password recovery is very difficult and requires the unit to be sent to Customer Service. There's a section in the following manual on page 82 that describes a procedure that may get you the username and you may get lucky and find that there is no password for that username...

http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Mobile/8512152.pdf

If you do get lucky the absolutely first thing you want to do is go to the recovery center and totally wipeout and restore the system since you have no idea what malware or spyware may be on that machine; there are many cases of people buying used computers only to find out that the seller was spying on them using such software that was deliberately planted on the machine.

If you're not lucky and that doesn't work go here and enter the serial number and see if they'll let you purchase the disc...

http://secure.tx.acer.com/RCDB/Main.aspx?brand=gateway

A real big caveat....If that machine matches a serial number hot-list you could find yourself with a lot more attention than you bargained for!

Your best bet may be to Google on "Password Recovery" and try some of the various software packages that come up. If that fails your only option may be to replace the hard drive (not expensive and Gateway provides easy instructions on their website), then do a clean install of Windows and go the Gateway site and start downloading the appropriate drivers, not hard just time consuming.

The jumper on the mother board only resets the BIOS password!!! The OP is trying to reset or change the windows Vista User Password. I have posted a bootable ISO CD image that has a linux command line tool to reset any windows passord. You can find it here;

I understand you don't want to file a claim since the cost wasn't that high. But I buy and sell on Ebay and I hope you at least reflect this sellers dishonesty in your feedback and rating of them.I know as a buyer I look at peoples ratings there and it does help me decide to bid or not to bid on an item.Word of advice:always ask the seller questions about laptops.

I use a tool at work, which i've used seldomly, but it has saved my a** when I needed it. It is a password recovery program that you boot from CD. It'll load up the registry before the OS touches it, and allow you to reset the password on any account. It takes 5 minutes, and no reinstall! It should work for Vista as well. PM me for more info.

EDIT: I'm too slow, just saw the OP resolved the issue.

It's easy to pull a password off a machine you have physical contact with. It's a little more tricky to brute force a machine remotely.

That's why you should use a password.

That and the average thief doesn't carry around ophcrack and other utilities.

Ok listen brah, it sounds like you're just talking about an OS password, not a BIOS one at startup.
So what?

Just blow away the HDD, partition it into C and D drive, put 40 or 50 gigs on C, rest on D.. then install Windows 7 from off piratebay.

Easy.
