Hey folks. I won't be around for a few days. I've been battling a recurring infection in my leg and today the doctor decided to admit me to the hospital so they can get me on IV treatment with antibiotics. Once we get the infection killed I'll be going to Indianapolis to see either Dr Terry Trammel or Dr Carlos Berrios to have my stump worked on.

I'm glad to finally get things rolling. Will post again when I get home and have some answers.

I will look forward to your return, keep us informed. The hospital is the best place to go get rid of the infection, they'll treat it with aggressive antibiotics and you will be as good as new, ready for the next round of repair to your stump. Take care and don't pinch the nurses

Finally back amongst the regular people. I had no idea I was going to be in the hospital for a week. The tibia in my left leg is indeed infected, so they hammered me with IV's. I have to take cipro and another antibiotic here at home until I go for surgery. They way things worked out, I'll go back in about the 30th of this month and have some more of my leg removed. When I talked to the ortho, I told him I didn't care if he went above the knee as long as he got rid of all the infected bone. I don't thin it will be necessary to go that high, but I'm prepared if that should be the case. I'm sure glad to be home, I missed my pup and my cats....LOL.

Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. It's good to have the support.

Its good to see you are home Greyhnd, I didn't realize an actual BONE could get an infection, I thought maybe the tissue around it would but not the actual bone. I learned something new. I am guessing it will be a longer journey than you were anticipating but hang in there and keep us updated.

imaperson - my ortho surgeon told me that an infection in the bone itself is fairly uncommon except in 3rd world countries. Not sure what that means in my case, but that's what he said. I was given 2 options: have the leg opened up and scrape away the infection and the damaged bone, or to just take off more of the leg above the infected area. I chose the second option and the doc thought it would be best as well. The xray clearly showed where the bone had been "eaten away" by the infection. There's a fancy medical term for the condition, but I can't remember what it is. Onward and upward!!

I think it is called Osteomylitis (sp?). I looked it up and here is a bit of what I found....................

*******************************************************************************

What is bone infection?
Infection is invasion of the body with organisms that have the potential to cause disease. Bone infection occurs when bacteria invade bone, either through the bloodstream or by contact with the outside environment. The bacteria eat away at the bone and damage the local blood supply to that bone, consequently preventing antibiotics from reaching the bacteria.

What are the common symptoms of bone infection?
Infection often causes redness, swelling, and pain in the affected limb. Sometimes, fluid exits through the skin. This is called a draining sinus tract. Occasionally, the infection weakens the bone so much that the bone breaks.

**********************************************************************************

IMHO, that may be why your doctor put you into the hospital to agressively treat the infection, so the bone didn't weaken and break. I am thinking, if the skin pad is not thick enough to support the bone from coming through, or causing a passageway for bacteria from the outside world to enter the tissue surrounding the bone. No wonder the stump is so painful. I hope it better for you now that you are out of the hospital.

imaperson, I'm not sure of the spelling either, but what you posted is the same thing the doc told me. The x-rays that I was shown would also validate that explanation. I think that once all the infected bone is removed I'll be in good shape. This has been worse than what I went through before my first amputation. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'm a stubborn old fart and I'll be back as good as new before the end of summer. I've got too damn much to do to just sit it out.

Just a quick update. Went to see the ortho surgeon today and my surgery is scheduled for Tuesday the 30th. Looks like the doctor will remove about 3 inches in length from my stump. That should get all the infected bone plus a bit more to be safe. I'm looking forward to finally getting this taken care of so I can move on with my life. Next will be a new prosthetic socket, but I'll need to let everything heal up and the excess volume from the swelling subside. I hope by July to be in a new leg and be back up on both feet.

Will let everyone know hw tings went when I get home in a few days.

Grey, wishing you all the best. I've gone thru the same thing. I lost my leg because of bone infection. I could go into details but this is not about me. It is best to get the infected bone removed because even if the infection cleared up it can linger in the bone for months, years until it flairs up again, this happened to me. I hope your operation goes well and you heal quickly so you can get on with your life.

Finally home after my leg surgery. Everything went according to plan and at the moment I'l pleased with the outcome. I have to make weekly followup visits to the surgeon for cast changes for 4 -5 weeks, but other than that my leg feels good, not much pain. I had a spinal instead of general anethesia and I'm not sure I'd do that again. Although there weren't any problems, it seems to me to take a bit longer to get my wits back. In about 8 weeks I should be able to get fitted for a new prosthetic. That's if there isn't any problem with fluid retention or other swelling.Dr l

Dr Love was very pleased with how things went and he said when the healing is all done I should be sporting a handsome stump. Hopefully before too long I'll regain my functionality.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and thoughts. I'm sure they had a positive effect on how things went.

Greyhnd, I just realized you were home from the hospital, glad things went so well for you. I am surprised though that you were only in there for a couple of days, I thought it would be much longer, considering the infection that was there. So, I suppose it is just the healing from the surgery to get through now before you are fitted with a new leg. I hope the time passes quickly and you are walking again soon. Keep up the good work Buddy.

I second that!!
Maybe you didn't care for yourself as well as you should have when you were young. But you can take action and turn most things around, even though you are older. It sounds to me like you have. Proof of that is your surgery having gone well, and you being home and on the mend so quickly!
As I said in the thread I started for you. 'May your recovery be short and your life be long!'
