I was just thinking how hard it is to diet and exercise alone. So I was wondering if there was any interest here in a support thread for healthier lifestyles.

I was thinking we might share tips and interesting food and supplement facts, and even funny stories.

I'm doing the American Diabetic Association diet, eating low carbs, high proteins, and trying hard to stick to 1300-1600 calories a day. For exercise I started with walking in the cool of early mornings. My first couple weeks I could only walk around the block, once. Now I can walk 3 miles in an hour.

Anybody else on the journey??

Good heavens R! There wasn't that much of you to loose. When you gonna put up a new pic so we can ogle and drool? I do about 50 carbs a day period. Unless of course I lose it, like yesterday and stop at Baskin Robbins for a kiddie sugar cone loaded with pralines and cream. Ok, so it's just one scoop, but it was to die for! Ha ha ha! Get it? I took a monster bike ride in the heat of today to try and lose some glucose and get back to even. Topped the ride off with a loverly snooze. Now I'm fit to fight. Bring it on!

I've been on a diet and exercise program for 15 years. For the first 2-3, it felt like one. Now it's just a lifestyle. Thanks to 8-10 hours per week of vigorous exercise I still pack it away like a teenager. When it comes to the diet though:

Very little white food like white flour, white rice, and sugar.

Very little deep fried food like chicken fingers or french fries.

Very little that looks extruded or "pooped out of a machine."

Three servings of fruit for breakfast is pretty easy to get used to.

And no meat without some sort of side, even if it is just a bed of lettuce.

If and when I do end up at a fast food restaurant: no soda, no fries, no combos, no super-sizing, just a simple sandwich is enough. It's not healthy but everything else is worse.

And the fringe benefits are so worth it.

Today I rode my bike to work. (10 miles, 33 minutes)

I would've spent 20 minutes in the car anyway.

I rode another 5 miles to a from lunch to justify a double bacon cheeseburger. (would've had to eat light otherwise)

If I had driven, most of my lunch would've been spent in the car.

I rode another 5 to the local tavern (20 minutes) and talked about the week gone by over exactly three beers before riding the last 5 home in the twilight. (20 minutes)

I would've spent 20 of those 40 minutes in the car anyway.

And the sunset was so much prettier without the car window in the way.

Life is good.

I also am on a low carb, low fat, no sugar or white food (bread, pasta, ect.) diet. I walk a hour a day I really haven't measured the miles but I think its 2 or maybe 2 1/2 miles. I been diabetic for 19 yrs. I don't really do a diet though its more a life style, dieting just makes it sound like something you are only going to do for a short time. Good luck and way to go.

Wow, it's so exciting the positive changes people are making to get healthy, stay healthy and active. All the weight that's been lost this year just by the ladies here thus far is a huge accomplishment. Congratulations to each of you. It's not easy to give up foods you love and crave, especially to make a new lifestyle. But it can be done, and we're living proof!

Diabetes is scary. But doctors and Jillian Michaels keep telling us that Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with diet and exercise. I'm trying not to get it, because I don't want to lose my legs in the future like my great-grandmother and my father. I had a
horrible scare with my left leg in February
where my circulation was compromised for about 10 weeks. I hope I never fail to appreciate good health ever again. Bless everybody, and keep up the good work!

I have been trying to behave with my eating. I work with a body builder and he suggested chicken and rice, also egg whites. I have become very creative working with these to add taste, change it up adding things like stewed tomatoes, different seasonings and thing like that. I also walk up to 36 miles a week (need to be better at it). Last year when I was very true to this diet I lost 65 pounds. I took a break and trying to get back to how I was, too lose my last 20 pounds.

One of the best things I found to help me was downloading an app on my iPod Touch called “lose it”. It is a free app and really helps you track how much you can or should eat…… check it out.

It seems like I'm always dieting.

After gallbladder surgery it seems like the weight creeps on if I am not conscious of diet/exercise. Coupled with fears of type 2 that runs in my family, it seems like I'm always dieting... I did REALLY well when I was going through Total Health and Fitness--dropped a good 30 lbs in 4 months. Basically I was eating a lot of fresh foods--lots of chicken, whole grains, veggies... They had it balanced out for me so certain points of the day I'd get the needed carbs, etc. The results were awesome but golly, eating every 2 hours was hard. Don't get me wrong, I love food but food is one of those things that just slows me down... Dating was very difficult because if I wasn't eating, I was in the gym... couldn't sit through a movie without looking at the clock to eat again. LOL

I tend to stay fairly active, I know part of my issues with gain has to do with my lack of motivation to eat--then I get hungry and over eat... Then of course, I can't burn it all off because it's too much...

I'm back to dieting again, not for vanity... for health. Sadly, I get physically ill as my weight goes up... Now I'm doing weight watchers. I'll be honest in that I haven't been trying that hard. I've lost 10 lbs in 7 weeks now... and really all I've done is logged my food. I'm a proponent of just food tracking, because it makes you accountable and conscious of what you are eating. When I log food, I subconsciously am dieting because I look back at my logs and say "OMG, I can't believe I just ate 800 calories for lunch!"

Oh, it WILL.......for me, it's like I can't stand anything with sugar, bad fats or heavy dairy products.

If not already......it'll show rosey color to your cheeks and you'll be more rested from your sleep.

Congrats to those who are watching diabetes. It runs in my family so I've been blessed NOT to have it. Keep up with great work, everyone!

never miss breakfast, by eating breakfast it tells your body to start making energy by burning sugar and kick starts your matabalizam

don't eat past 7 pm, that way you don't have a bunch of food that will just turn to fat as you sleep cuz your not burning enery

there is no substitute for excersize,
(i don't know if i spelled those right)

and try and eat 4 small meals with no snackin inbetween instead of 3 bigger meal with a lot of snacking. this you make your matabalizam work all day long

4 meals instead of 3 will make your matabalizam work better and will help a lot in turning the body fat you have into sugar which will be burned off and in turns gives you more energy and a better mood !

but the main thing is stick to what you start ! don't keep switching diets cuz you don't see immidiate results cuz that will just screw with your body and make things worse i think

but what do i know, im just me

but at the age of 17 i weighted 310lbs at 6'4" tall i had a 48" waist and now im 25 with a 33" waist weighing 205 and thats how i did it

Thats great dodge, and yes eating 4 or even 5 meals a day is best and you also need to remember small is better, other than with vegis and fruit (unless your diabetic then fruit is also carbs, almost everything has carbs in it) the exercise part is the hardest for me, getting it every day that is, working makes it hard cause I'm on my feet 8 hours a day but doc says it doesnt do much unless it a vigorous workout have to get the hear pumping and blood flowing basically for at least 40 mins or more and 3 a week is good but 5 is best.
good luck and hope everyone gets to the healthy weight they are shooting for.

Find a detailed street map (like 34x44 size if you can get it) and hang it on your wall. Highlight every street you've walked and see how big of an area you can cover. You'll be surprised at the things you find on all those streets you never knew were there.

BTW, I earned a burger off the grill and on a whole wheat bun covered with onions and pickles today doing trail work. Some friends and I are trying to reestablish the Spawn Creek trail. Unfortunately, Spawn Creek is popular with beavers and they're always dropping trees across the trail.

One of my fave rules of thumb is if it's an indulgence like cheesecake or brownies or (gulp!) burgers, you have to make it from scratch. No cheating by going to the grocery or a restaurant.

(No. I didn't cheat. That is, not unless you're expecting me to slaughter the cow.)

I believe that our bodies will balance out to the wieght we should be at if we truly eat the right way.... which would be very little sweets... a balanced diet - with lots of veggies. Now if I can train my body to enjoy veggies.
