My sister and I went to Ireland for 2 weeks a few years ago. My niece was in the marching band at JMU and they were invited to play for the mayor of Dublin. We went in the companion group and the trip was during the Christmas holidays which was especially nice.
We got to see a lot of the country and visit many places. The people are so warm and friendly there and we were treated so nicely. We did a pub crawl too which was fun. I wasn't too crazy about Guinness but it is the most beautiful liquid I have ever seen. Did you know palm trees grow in Dublin?
We plan on going back and visiting the western part of Ireland. We will go independently and not as part of a group so that we can have the freedom to go when and where we like. Pucker up Blarney stone - here we come.

Agree 200% with you about Ireland. I've been there twice, once during St. Patrick's week. We went all over. The west is the best. Most of that region is still fairly rural. No internet, not good tv reception. It is best to sit outside and watch the sheep follow the leader for dinner. Or watch the sea. Or travel up the mountains where the only thing you might meet is a one-eyed man being led by a donkey. Or search for fairies in the bushes. It is magical.
Food is not "to go." It is "take away." Meals are a social event and not hurried. The people are wonderful. Cannot be said enough.
I cannot tell you how many times people said they were so sad about what happened to America on 9-11. People open up not only their homes, but their hearts.
I saw no crime when I was there either time save for a drunk woman beating her husband with her purse. The garda quickly arrived and took her to the gaol.
The most relaxing thing in my life was sitting on the beach in County Wexford watching the ships sail across the irish sea to France.
The irish made me feel at home........and one elderly gentleman, hearing my comment, said, "Perhaps you are home."

When I was in the National Guards, I was called to active duty for some months in Bosnia back in 1998. And on the way over and back we landed in Ireland. Thank goodness it was in the day time for I got to see the area as we were landing and taking off. It's beautiful. Some day I do want to back and see the country side. My dad's side of the family is from Ireland. And yes the people are very friendly there.

Aer Lingus just sent me an email on their specials for fall.
There's a deal for a vacation package from chicago to Shannon
6 nights at bed and breakfast, airfare, and a rental car for
a little more than $1,260.00
Can't beat that price!
I may be going again (3rd time is the charm!)

When the pubs close down for the night, the locals pee on the Blarney Stone on their way home......Then laugh each time a tourist bends over backwards to kiss it...Thought you should know before you go

If they do they have a heck of a climb up that castle to pee on the Blarney Stone...LOL and I sure hope they dont fall through the hole!! Ireland is totally awesome...I loved it, so beautiful and the people so friendly. Traced my family roots, found my family crest, even a distant relative who had a pub with my maiden name. Had some very strange experiences there as wells but that is another thread...I felt like a child coming home to the mother land. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life and I hope to do it again.

Ireland has been one of the beswt places I've visited. It is a beautiful place and the people are so friendly there. I met an older gentleman in the park and he invited my family to have tea in his castle.......skeptical here. It was a castle, just not one of the more grand type. We had a lovely time. Wish I had known about the peeing on the Blarney stone....too late!

I second the warning about the Blarney Stone!!!! I dated a guy from Ireland and visited many times. The locals warned me about that one. Kind of humerous, though. haha. Sanitize the stone before you bend back to kiss it!!!

I grew up in Ireland. It is great to hear you all say such nice things about it, makes me a little home sick. I actually grew up not far from the Blarney Stone in County Cork and I can tell you, the peeing stories, NOT TRUE.
It's difficult enough to get to the top of that castle sober, lol. And it is always locked up at night - so HAPPY KISSING TO YOU ALL
