What I thought was just a hairball turned out to be a stomach and small intestines coated with clumping kitty litter. In one week she became lethargic and stopped eating or drinking. She had to have surgery to remove it and I am now feeding her with a syringe until she is stronger. Why isn't there a warning on the box? I have never seen her eat the litter and all I can think is that it came from licking her feet. She isn't a kitten but an eight year old healthy cat. Back to non-clumping litter

Hi littlemoma!
The veterinary I saw wasn't too confident in his work. My other cat has no problems with clumping litter nor does my sister's 4 cats. I have no idea why this happened but I am now buying non-clumping litter. Better safe than sorry. Three days after surgery, she finally came to me. She is purring and kneading on my lap. I stink a syringe feeding but most did make it in her mouth. The rest was all over me.

This has been a problem for a while. One would think that when it says to NOT dispose of it in toilet as it will cause plumbing blocks/problems we all should've known better huh? Yet people were loosing litters for a while before they put it together. It also attacks their lungs too from the dust when they scratch so have that checked too since you've already experienced other complications.
I hope your cat recovers well and quickly

lay her on your lap and put syringe slightly in at corner of mouth. free hand should support her head or scratch her neck or wherever her favorite spot is to encourage her to stay still then slowly depress syringe. cat will automatically start licking and swallowing. just go SLOW that way you won't wear as much and she will ingest more.

I mostly use regular clay litter. I am sorry this happened to your cat. I am not crazy about the clumping litter anyway. My cats are very old so I will be sure to stay away from it.

It says not to flush non-clumping, too.
It is hard to feed her because the syringe is not suppose to aim toward the throat but more toward the back teeth on the other side. Problem is she has no back teeth, lol
She has improved a lot today. She is a little fighter, always has been. She not suppose to jump or climb but I see she is waiting for me on my bed, like she did before the surgery. Goodnight

Just can't win with kitty litter right?
Wildflower: I am glad to hear she's getting her strength back. I hope she has a speedy recovery and is back to her happy self. We worry so much when they are ill don't we?

Thanks Nicole and Godsbutterfly.
Such a relief to see her more alert and teasing for attention. They are our furry babies and they depend on us to take of them. They give us so much in return.

Mary! My cat might be one in a million that had this issue with litter but one is too much if it is your kitty.
Bailey says, "Hi Boo! I may be half naked but I am feeling much better"

I have never seen my cats ever spend any time in the litter, it is in and out. That is why I don't think she intentionally ate a bunch of litter. What I think is it might have happened over a long period of time. She likes to play in the tub and her feet get wet and then she goes in the litter box. Who knows?
Do you mean suicide by eating clumping litter?or is it clumpicide?

I am so glad you were able to save Bailey. Boo is getting a rescue kitty tomorrow. We already have one that is Grey with a white dot on her chest. She is pregnant and we will be having a litter in no time. Spaying all thru the house.

I will never fully understand why or how the kitty litter ended up in her stomach. I have heard of people that have an illness and eat dirt.
I am just really happy that she is getting better. When she is sick she is very clingy to me like a sick child wanting their mom near.
How does Boo get along with other cats? Bailey is shy and would probably hide from the kitten and Maggie would smack the kitten on the head without using her nails. She is a good girl. Scared but won't back down. I brought home a friend's ridgeback and she just hissed and watched him.

lol, I love your description of the incident. Even if it happens to one in a million, it doesn't matter because that one is your baby.
She is doing SO much better! I am having trouble keeping her from jumping until next Wednesday.

thats probably the main issue. kitties that play in wet areas and then go in litter box are gonna have a problem. could even happen with regular clay litter. it sticks to their feet and whats left can be licked off.
always used clump litter, never had problem but can see this is possible. guess it depends upon kitty's habits.
use a litter track mat, maybe two, outside of box. that helps a lot.
also there are several brands of non clay litters, like cedar types. better for kitty but they dont absorb as well. still its better for the aqua-cats. or anyone wanting to be extra safe.
