How do you know anymore if what you have is a cold or another version of the flu? I know you can catch colds and flu by being around someone..the problem I am having is distinguishing what is a cold and what is the flu??

think for some reason this year it has been even harder....just here look at all the folks that have gotten really ill....think the weather has not helped

Yes I think the weather has made it worse. I'm to the point that I'm going to tell sons not to come over when they have cold symptoms. Every time they do...I end up getting sick 2 days later. I did find that Lysol now has a spray that claims it kills flu virus. I bought an extra large can of it yesterday and sprayed entire house. Of course..I am already sick with the latest cold or flu..but trying to stop my mom or others of getting sick too.

Flu Symptoms or Cold?
Feeling under the weather? Are you wondering whether it's symptoms of flu or a cold?
Because flu symptoms are quite similar to cold symptoms, it's often hard to tell the difference. But there is one clue about flu that can help you know. When you have the flu, you feel flu symptoms sooner than you would cold symptoms, and they come on with much greater intensity.
What symptoms will I have with flu?
With the flu, you may feel very weak and fatigued for up to 2 or 3 weeks. You'll have muscle aches and periods of chills and sweats as fever comes and goes. You may also have a stuffy or runny nose, headache, and sore throat.
Can I compare flu symptoms with cold symptoms?
Yes. The following chart can help you compare flu symptoms with cold symptoms. Use it to lean the differences and similarities between flu and cold symptoms. Then, if you get flu symptoms, call your doctor and ask about an antiviral drug.
Symptoms Cold Flu
Fever Rare Characteristic, high (100-102 degrees F); lasts 3-4 days
Headache Rare Prominent
General Aches, Slight Usual; often severe
Pains
Fatigue, Quite mild Can last up to 2-3 weeks

Prevention Good hygiene Annual flu shot or FluMist
Treatment Cold: Only temporary relief of symptoms
Flu Treatment: Antiviral drugs (oseltamivir or zanamavir) within 24-48 hours
of onset

I have heard they did. My only problem is that I would have to go and get this test every 2 or 3 weeks. That is how often I seem to get into contact with someone..usually one of my grandsons...that are sick!!

Thank you Anne...that confirms what I thought this was. THE FLU! I started out with sore throat last weekend..then the cough and chills came. I have had most all of the symptoms. Even woke up this morning with one heck of a headache. I think I'm going to call sons and tell them that I love em...but please stay away when you are sick!!!

Another problem this year is that for those of us who got the flu shot, it is only 40% accurate, meaning it is not protecting us very well this year

Lotus, the reason you havent had the flu in 10 years, is that you dont live in Watertown anymore..., but you HAVE to remember how wonderful it was to feel like you got hit by a semi.....

 sorry sherri...I didn't see your post, that you were sick, before I replied...I do hope you get your feet back underneath you. You are correct tho...if people are sick, colds, flu's they need to stay away!! It was different when we were younger..but now, all these little ailments can really knock people our age for a loop. I think all the sunshine helps, here in Florida...but I also, very seldom come in contact with young children...which any teacher will tell you..makes for a lot of colds and sniffles

It's ok lotus and thank you hun. I didn't use to catch colds or even get the flu very often till my grandsons came along. I can't even remember getting sick when my sons were young. I mean getting sick from their illnesses. You are correct...after I hit 50...now I seem to get even the basic cold or flu!! aaacckkk!! aaaccchhhooo Sorry all....I did cover my nose and mouth before I did it!!

ARRRGGGHHH!!! Stuffy head and scratchy throat the past couple days....I think it wants to hit me!!
Doesn't help when co-workers come to work and hack and sneeze all over everyone and everything!! Hope I don't get hit too bad!
