My son was diagnosed with ADD. He's not hyper but he has a hard time focusing. His mind is going a mile a minute. I found that he needed to do 2 things at once and he could focus better. Sometimes I ask him to stand up while he does his homework and just that simple act gives him something else to think about and settles him down so he can work.
But I did have to put him on Concerta and that has done a world of good for him. It doesn't stay or build up in the body so he isn't doped up at all. I have found that kids with ADD are very intelligent.
I know it can be very frustrating and you need a lot of patience to deal. Good luck.

I'm studying holistic nutrition right now, so I got one of my books out for you. Here is some of what this author Elson Haas, MD has to say on the subject.
"The primary problem, I think, is based in nutrition and metabolism; hyperactivity is definitely helped with a good diet and supplement program...Although genetics and personality may be factors, there are definitely strong correlations with poor diet and the over use of salt, sugar, sodas and other beverages containing caffeine, refined foods, and food chemicals. There may be food allergies or hypersensitivities, and often there are deficiencies in minerals, such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, and mangeanese, as well as some of the B vitamins.
Nutritionally based treatments can be helpful for youngsters and adults with ADHD. "
This is from His book STAYING HEALTHY WITH NUTRITION; THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO DIET AND NUTRITIONAL MEDICINE
Hope this helps.

I have heard of diet being able to control the problem and that's a much better way, but that's a lifestyle change as well. But I would check that out. I can't get my son to eat Anything so it's hard working that in to a degree where it helps.

My friend is using the diet for her son who is profoundly autistic, and he is now signing, but whether that is the diet or his growing up and learning..who can tell?
My son has adhd and I tried one of the medications with him and the result was horrible, its seemed to make all the bad symptoms worse, and he had melt-downs over nothing.
So far I havent found an herbal equal for the adhd meds. But Im still looking.
In the meantime we are going to try another medication. What makes one melt down may work perfectly for another.
With my fingers crossed....

Diet makes a world of difference!
It's really difficult to make a complete rapid diet change and expect that a kid will follow it willingly at all times. But, if you make some basic changes that are non-negotiable and somewhat in your control (example: whole wheat pasta or the new catelli smart is great, brown rice instead of white, whole grain breads, CUT the refined sugar down...keep it for AFTER school hours when the need to concentrate is not as high) you will see a change for the better.
With that you should look into coaching. Google ADD and Coaching, there is a lot of information out there. This can be done professionally or you can do quite a bit on your own. We also need to show some understanding when they forget things, lose things, take 3 times longer than average to complete homework, etc., but NOT allowing them to use it as an excuse. Use your understanding to help them learn to develop tools to get around the areas they need help in. I've given my son a whiteboard with eraseable markers he keeps in his room. He leaves himself reminders on the whiteboard. If he needs to bring something home from his locker, he will write it on a post it and stick it on his binder. Little tools they help come up with to help them along in day to day life.
There are different types of ADD and knowing which your child has is important...this matters with their diet as well. I recommend this book, for help in determining the type and gearing diet and treatment towards the right one. There are some sample diets for each type as well.

It's a LOT of work to make these kinds of changes initially, and you will never stick with them 100%, but if you strive for 90%, you're doing terrific. The work becomes much less as they learn to find tools themselves and become more independent and confident.

I am certainly not an expert on this but do have my worthless opinion on it.I had a girlfreind years ago who happened to be a neighbor too.She had 2 early teenage boys who was diagnozed with some form of ADd or whatever. They were both on Ridalin and both hyper as shit and would punch holes in her walls and everything.I would see them at times rolling on the lawn having a fit like a baby.thier father was never around I took them both under my wing and would take them both fishing with me and my daughter.even though Caitlyn hated the boys coming..she knew what I was doing and that was only to help them.We would go out in my boat and we would take time out for a lunch,no sodas or junk, just juices and water. We would sit and talk and laugh and those 2 boys would open up to me so much. When they was with me I never had a problem with them concentrating or anything. After a while my daughter even enjoyed them coming with us.After i stopped seeing the boys mom I would still take them out whenever they asked and could see a good chage in them, wether or not it was because they was getting older or not i dont know. But i think it has a lot to do with just showing love and talking to our children.I believe I also have some sort of ADD/ADHT or whatever.I have a hard time concentrating at times and start many things at once without finishing. But when i sit with my daughters and just talk my mind is very very clear. As is the same with hunting or fishing,I can sit in a deer stnad for hours on end and even though my mind does wander the peacefulness keeps me focused on what i am doing. So I think there is something there with a natural cure, and i think it starts with a little love .But it has to start at birth.JMO...Bock

My daughter is highly intelligent but most of her problems are at school, she's in all honors classes but she has a hard time focusing on the task at hand, it happens at home also - I only give her one task at a time to finish, it can certainly try my patience. I just do not like what I've seen about the medications....I keep hoping the older she gets she will outgrow it. We have struggled with it since Kindergarten, she's now in the 7th grade. I guess I've just learned how to live with it, but then I think am I depriving her by not medicating her?? It's tough to deal with but I do it everyday!! Someone had told me once about just an over the counter vitamin supplement but I sure can't remember which one it was. Thanks for all your responses.

more like a natural ass whoppin would be best. my son was diagnosed with more than he can handle. i have tried the drugs and the counseling. but it's not that simple. there are all kinds of vitamins and herbs you can try. my son knows that if i let him he will get away with murder so i believe a nice stern hand to the ass helps matters at certain times.
and doctor's nowadays are full of shit. all they want is to push pills and take your money.
i swear if my son farted sideways they'd come out with a pill to cure it. it's really pathetic in this day and age. no one really wants to help a child all they see in $$$$$$$$

stormy...in the book above, it lists some vitamin supplements that may help depending on the type. I spoke with my doctor about the ones recommended for my son and he had no problem with them at all. He said there's no guarantees, but they certainly wouldn't do any harm. I have not tried them yet as I'm trying to get my son to learn to swallow a pill..lol!
I find these kids are visual and seeing things helps to remind them (and unfortunately distract them too!). I use lists a lot. If my son has a list he can check off, he is able to complete his tasks.
I don't think you should feel bad about "depriving" your daughter of medication. If you have both managed up to this age, I would say you're doing quite fine. As long as you continue to care the way you obviously do and pay attention and work with her, you will know in your gut if you need to revisit the medication possibility.
The biggest fear for me as the teen years approach is the possibility of "self-medication" via alcohol, which is common. This is one thing to watch for as they get older. Some kids actually do "grow out" of ADD/ADHD through the teen years, but many continue into adulthood. I think as long as we pay attention, we will see any signs of going down the wrong road and can "nip it in the bud" right away.

Gina, I agree to disagree. Anyone can spank a child so much until you fillet (sp)them. I tried it w/ my 6 yr. old from 3-present.
I fought like hell to keep him off any meds until it became apparent that there was no other option @ the time. He's on concerta also.
I'd love to try anything natural...the dr. recommended 300 mg melatonin @ night to help him sleep & consistency. Consistency is a COMPLETE & TOTAL life changing event for alot of people if they are willing to be honest with themselves & those around them.
I don't give him sugar, red dyes, or caffiene of any kind & haven't since he was born. He will be the first to tell you he can't have any of the above because it makes him crazy-hyper. He's quick to set teachers @ school, his day-care providers, even his gr-grandmother straight about sneaking him anything unhealthy.
He told me a couple nights ago that he wished everyone would be as nice to him as I am when his mind won't let him behave, but some people just don't understand like me.
Good luck. I'd love to know any other options for him also.\

I agree with you because I didn't want to put my son on medication but when his schoolwork was being affected I had to do something. He was on Adderall but now he is on Vivanse (not supposed to suppress his appetite as much) and he can concentrate in school and it helps his self esteem. I spank my kids every now and then but for real what are you going to do spank them all of time.
