Costa Rica
The weather is great. It is very inexpensive, and beautiful country to travel through. Wandered around the last two trips, and found the people to be freindly, happy, and very helpful. Exchange rate is good, and the cost of living is low. I guess that is why I met so many people from the states living down there. You can stay at 4 and 5 star resorts for around for about 100 dollars a day, or if you stay at the clean locally owned hotel/motel, it will run from 6 to 28 dollars a day.
It is a very green freindly country, and the mountains north of San Jose, are just breath taking. Great to sit on the deck at night and watch the volcano.

I don't know....let me see whats around the corner.

In 25 years of travel it seems to me vacations come in two flavors....Isolated or Educational.

Isolated tend to be your packaged resorts or cruises-where you rarely 'mix' with cultures and are routed to various resturants etc etc etc. For some that is what they want-that comfort zone and relaxation of knowing what is coming around the bend. Beach, packaged activities and soft drinks with US names....

Educational is where you 'mix' with the locals...wander the streets of London, tool around France OUTSIDE of Paris, eating at a local, Osaka family resturants.

Educational also is sharing your interests with others who share your passion...like watching Pickett's Charge on a HOT July day, walking the Normandy Beaches, attending a dog show (Bernese Mountain Dogs Rock!). Or it is jumping in the car and just heading out into the country to buy fruit and veggies from a farm stand.

Vacations are a state of mind....

The Maldives. Tiny litte islands in the Indian ocean , right on the equator.
The airport is an island by itself. You fly in transcontinental on a 767 or airbus 380 and to get off the airport you need to take a boat ! For the further outlying islands you take a hydroplane. They land on a lagoon with 86 degree water. Turn the plane around and back it onto the beach ... Each resort is an island by itself ( there are over 80 different resorts there . The counry lives purely of tourism. You can walk around your island in 15 minutes ( and that is if you go slow ... ). Bungalows are all build on the water. The sliding glass door in the bedroom opens up to the water. take 5 steps down and go for your morning swim in the warm lagoon.

The sand is whiter than the beach chairs ... if there is a tropical shower it lasts 5 minutes, everybody stays on the beach. The rain is warm and offers a little bit of refreshment. The swimming pools on the islands have a COOLING system ! Most resorts only hold 50 to 80 people.

If the ocean rises 2 feet these island cease to exist. Here there really are islands with only a patch of grass and 2 or 3 palmtrees ... The scubadiving is awesome. Even if you are only snorkeling this is superb. You can walk into the water and walk a hundred yards and still be only waist deep in the water. In some locations you can even walk between islands.
There are no seasons. The difference between summer and winter is 3 degrees , and the currents between the island turn around. Bringing huge mantarays (20 feet wingspan) and friendly whalesharks (40 to 50 feet long.) in the channels between islands . These guys can not cross the barrrier reefs surrounding the lagoons. Each island has its own barrier reef.

The word 'Atoll' is actually a word that comes from the native language spoken on these islands. Their language has over 40 words to describe different shades of blue ...

Just use google and search for 'maldives' , but make sure you have a hanky ready . You will be crying your eyes out that you are sitting behind a computer , only looking at pictures of it.... i disclaim all responsibility for possible severe depression after seeing the pictures...

For me , that is the last real paradise on earth (I have done Tahiti , Moorea , Hawaii , Bahamas. nothing comes even close..). I've been there 7 times ... each time 3 weeks ...

I've been to Costa Rica the last two years - LOVE IT! Even though I'm 60+ I still love Hostels. There are some first class ones in CR. Inexpensive and friendly. For your first CR trip I would suggest a good overview....try Caravan Tours.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area is beautiful at Christmas. I have a condo locted directly above Dollywood where I can sit out on the deck and listen to the music. Great place to go shopping. Lots of neat places around to do day and night. It is worth the trip. Also they have some pretty decent prices on hotels. Just check them out on the web. All places are decent looking.
