Help....I have a Toshiba Satellite L505 that won't boot normally. I can boot it into safe mode, but when I try to boot it normally it hangs up on loading, what can cause this? I have used the recovery cd's and it still does it. I'm at my wits end. I have no audio, no webcam, no usb ports.

you did a complete format before reloading those cd's? if all you did was load the cd's. then y ou just loaded windows over windows and that doesn't really do anything.

if so. then some type of hardware has gone bad.

That's not a good sign.

Lets check to see if it is an HDD Issue. Have you run a checkdisk? Boot into Safe Mode with command prompt and type:

"chkdsk /r C:", it will ask you if you want to schedule that to run at next bootup. Say yes and restart. It may take some time, especially if it is detecting issues.

EDIT: Actually, try booting normally with NOTHING plugged into the USB ports.
Then try checkdisk. (I have ran into a few laptops that refused to boot with a USB webcam or thumbdrives.)

I'm not sure if I did a complete reformat or not. I did a wipe that said to put it back to right out of the box, but i'm not sure. I did run the chkdsk and someone on here told me it is probably my hard drive and that I need to replace it. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

What were the results of chkdsk?
What happened when you attempted to boot normally without any discs in the CD/DVD-ROM and all USB devices unplugged?

The only reason I honestly don't think its a mechanical hard drive problem is because it works fine in safe mode.

don't recall what the result was, but definately some bad sectors. When I boot it normally it hangs up after loading windows while trying to load other programs...

Hmmmm.
Bad sectors mean that the hard drive is on its way out.
It could last a day, or it could last a couple months. (It could even last a year or more but I wouldn't trust it with valuable data).

Boot into safe mode, back up all your important data, and replace the hard drive.
Over time the reliability of the drive will get worse.

Thanks for your help....this is what everyone has told me that I need to replace the hard drive. Fortunately already have backed up everything so there is no data on it to worry about losing.

HDD could be the problem. I have seen HDDs that report bad sectors work just fine for years. However, usually the bad sector count increases each time you run scan disk, and this is not good.

My concern is it locking up after you get into Windows, but that would mean it seems to boot just fine. Before you go and throw money at this thing, go to Microsoft's website, or Google this, and look for "Clean Boot XP" and try that. You are going to use MSCONFIG to stop all the start up programs and extranenous services.

It could be a combo of apps loading at start up that are causing your woes. Note, there is nothing you need to have load at start up, beyone maybe some AV programs. All other programs can load when you want from the Start Menu. However for troubleshooting, adhere to the clean boot procedures as an AV program can be the cause of some of these issues.

Note, if the clean boot cures this, run the laptop that way all the time, other than any Antivirus programs you want to run all the time.

Yes, she told me that she is using Windows 7. But I always try the cheap, meaning free things first.

Usually.

However I have been known to throw money at a sinking ship too....

LOL Me too.
And to be honest, I think the XP trick would also work on 7.
It was a very good call.
I'm just a tad rusty on XP and can't for the life of me remember the differences.

If you really wanna be old school, but not for a novice. I'd partition around the bad sectors, lol...but it's so much easier to get a bigger, HD.

No sound on Windows 7.

First thing, back up any important data, just in case it gets weird again.

Then set a system restore point (use Windows Help and Support to learn how to do that). Your about to do things that you might want to undo.

Go through all your settings, did something turn off the Windows Sound? Sounds on W7 are processed on the CPU, so a sound card issue is probably not the reason here. However, if you can't find the setting to change you might try the next thing:

Update your drivers for your machine. Get the complete set from Toshiba and run them.

Did you mak sure that the default device for sound was set correctly? I'd look in control panel under sound properties (or something similarly named) and see what the settings are.

Also might help to use google and enter in some thing like "Model/make of pc no sound on windows re installation" Sometimes you will find a solution. I've done it before to find solutions for obscure problems and had some luck.

Chances are if you are having problems someone else has too. Ever since MS changed the way the audio system works in Windows it's been flaky.

Yeah, is probably needing the drivers from toshiba web site. Doubtful that on a laptop, it would be set for like...surround sound stereo or something ..check to make sure it's set for laptop speakers.

Guessing XP,since vista and win7 usually do a decent job on audio out of the box... need to go to toshiba, look up your model # and download the audio drivers.
