i was thinking about getting a decent little truck on the side, but nothing thats gonna cost an arm n a leg.
the gmc canyons are nice, not too bad on the price,but....5 cyliders?
would it be too much to ask for a 6?
whats your opinion on these 5 cylinder trucks?

they are pretty reliable from what i have seen so far. mostly just a slightly more cost and fuel efficient alternative to the traditional vortec 4.3s

I looked at one of those when a couple of years ago, but it wasn't comfortable for me to sit in so I went to a full size.

From what I understand that motor has been very reliable.

I have an 08 chevy colorado with a 5 cylinder and I'm very pleased with it. The only downfall is I drive on the beach a lot and it lacks a little power in soft sand. If I'm correct I believe you can get one with a 6 cylinder engine.

maybe this year you can,im guessing.
i mainly looked at used ones,between 08-2010...and i saw 4 cyl n 5's.
basicly,its a chevy colorado,right?
for the price, they're not a bad looking truck.
they could atleast put a cd player in it.
a majority of them just had am/fm stereo.
thats kinda redicilous to the buyer, but then again...who keeps the stock systems in their vehicles? no one.

I usually keep my vehicles all stock, put 200 K on them, and dump them. But as far as the 5 cylinder goes, it has been quite a reliable engine. With the exception of some early ones. I had heard of weak valve springs being an issue, but not much else.

I was interested in buying one back in 2007. But i didn't like the axle ratio choices. And i couldn't get a stick shift in the 5 cylinder. Only the 4 cylinder. Most 4 cylinder trucks get slowed down by a headwind.

I also wasn't too hip to the fact that my 2 choices of colors were an added expense. When i found out my father was FINALLY going to dump his old pick up for a new one, i decided to get a car instead. I now use his truck on the few occassions i actually need a truck. Which isn't that many.

i appreciate the info,yall...thanks.
i dont need one with big balls,but....if it takes forever for it to get up to 60 mph,and it lags...i'll get annoyed with it.

The colorado and canyon are pretty much the same I guess except for different grills. Mine has a cd player, am,fm, and that satellite radio which I never listen to and know little about. It also has a sunroof, all leather. It has all the bells and whistles the bigger trucks have. Even has nitrogen in the tires.

You originally asked for 5 cylinder opinions. For many, 5 cylinders may sound odd, but they've been around for a while. VW, Audi, Volvo have had 5s for a long time. Should be smoother running and more grunt than a similar sized four. Subtle compromise! The big factor should be the reliability of the particular engine for it's purpose. I haven't heard anything negative and would be inclined to give them a try. Anybody know if there's more or less room in the engine compartment to make them better or worse to work on?

LS swap. Simple fix... and relatively cheap.

Ahh.....Chevy / GMC does offer that vehicle with a V-8 already in it. But what is the point? A faster truck, and more stops to the gas station?

I would be going with the 5 cylinder myself. If i could have gotten it the way i wanted it. For the price i wanted to pay.

And possibly the OP feels the same way.

Yeah, the 2012 models are offering a V8. Seems a bit overpowered to me. 300HP is a bit much for a mid sized truck. I traded my Colorado in yesterday on a Canyon and I stuck with the 5 cyl again. I wish they came with a V6 because the 5 is a little weak in soft sand.
