WOW, excellent! Monk....kind of a trick question Myung plays for Dream Theater, the baddest a** prog rock band ever. JMO I think Bogert did some of his best work with Jeff Beck in the early mid 70's "Beck,Bogart,& Appice." (his rythym co-hort in Fudge) if you can find it it is a textbook for out front bass playing. Check it out! Schacher, I can only give you 1/2 credit....homeboy Schacher, and Lee Dorman (Iron Butterfly) made me go out and buy a cheap a** bass w/ my paper route money. My Dad was not pleased.

And just what is it that makes Gene Simmons a BAD bassist? I admit he's no Sheehan, Harris, or Lee, but he's not a BAD bassist.
I have seen MANY bands in concert - including the original KISS in 78, KISS with Vinnie Vincent, KISS with Kulick, and the original KISS on the reunion tour in 96.
All in all KISS has been on of the tightest bands, musically, and sound wise, I have ever seen. (The Vinnie Vincent version was the least entertaining).
One of the worst sounds and sloppiest performances I have ever seen was Whitesnake - incidentally Rudy Sarzo was playing bass at that show.
Perhaps you don't like KISS's music - that's your perrogative - musical taste is subjective, and only snob thinks there tastes are BETTER than someone else's. But as far as being a BAD bassist, I have to totally disagree with your opinion of Gene Simmons.
In case you wonder -i like MANY types of music - jazz, rock, metal, blues, classical, rockabilly, even some country.

PS - I am also a musician - guitarist and some keyboarding

C'mon TD....really. Gene Simmons? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I don't begrudge you for that. But Gene never hit any note other than "root/5th/octave". I will admit to liking the little "double pick" "fill" in Detroit Rock City. But overall....NO!!
How do you think RUSH would have sounded if Gene had to step in an take over Geddy's place??? I shudder at the implications.......

THAT MAKES SENSE ,BUT YOU CANT REALLY COMPIRE RUSH TO KISS ,COME ON NOW. IN THE 70'S LIKE IT OR NOT KISS WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS ON THE PLANET ,IM NOT DEFENDING KISS THE TICKET SALES AND RECORD SALES SPEAKS FOR ITS SELF. I GREW UP IN CANADA SO I KNOW HOW IMPORTANT A BAND LIKE RUSH WAS,BUT KISS WAS A GUITAR DRIVEN BAND.ITS A TOALY DIFFERENT ANIMAL. BOTH BANDS ARE GOOD.AND DEPENDING ON YOUR TASTE ONE BAND WILL ALWAYS BE THE FAVORET
GENE WAS THE BACK UP FOR ACE AND PAUL,IF GENE PLAYED IN RUSH I DONT THINK THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A KISS OR A RUSH,AND THAT WOULD HAVE SUCKED
IN ANY CASE IM GLAD TO SEE MUSICIANS ON HERE TALKIN ABOUT THESE THINGS

Not comparing Rush to Kiss....who could? I don't like Kiss because they put show over substance. They were a "one trick pony". granted, they played that one trick for millions. But this column is about Bass players, and I'm sorry.... Gene will never be remembered as a one of the "greats" JMO

Rush bores me.
In defense of Gene Simmons' bass guitar playing, when the band first got together, Gene was supposed to play rhythm guitar. But Paul Stanley said Gene should play bass because he (Paul) was going to play rhythm guitar. So Gene played bass guitar even though they all knew he was a better rhythm guitarist.
When KISS first started out, they were all determined to be rock musicians. They came up with the costumes because they wanted to do something a little different from the bands they had been listening to.
Still, it is true that Gene Simmons will not be remembered as a bass guitarist. He was never a great or even good musiican.

oh yea...Gene was an accountant before he started KISS, I read in an interview years ago they went for the costumes because they even knew they weren't that good, and they wanted to make money and get laid.....how esoteric......

Okay, so you like Rush and Yes. I just find both those bands BORING!!!!!!!!!!! I just don't find anything about their music exciting or stimulating.
You can call Geddy Lee. I'd tell him I think he is over-rated and Rush is boring.
Cliff Williams is a more interesting bass guitarist.

OH....THAT"S IT!!!! It is so "ON" Luv dear, You better count your lucky stars you are 1200 miles away! I'm going to tell Canada what you said aboot Rush. Don't be surprised if a couple of Mounties show up at your door!!!! Now strictly for clarification purposes, I will tell you I'm in love with old Rush,74' - 85'. By the mid 80's, I started to lose interest. But I saw Rush 2 mos. ago,(for the 9th time) and those old farts played for almost 3 hrs. and rocked like youngsters. I respect the hell out of them. Beg, borrow, or steal, "Caress of Steel" 1975, "A Farewell to Kings" 77',or "Hemispheres" 78' Then tell me they are boring.
No....don't tell me that, I'll just come unfreakin'glued. My daddy taught me to not beat up on ladies. har de har har. and who the hell is Cliff Williams? I want to know, so i can "bash" him.......luvyaluv

I LOVE THIS TOPIC,BUT ONCE AGAIN TOTALY DIFERENT ANIMAL,WITH KISS AND BANDS LIKE THEM SINCE,THE SHOW IS PART OF THE SUBSTANCE NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT...OR WANTING TO BE RICH OR GET LAID,IN THE 70'S EVERYONE WAS EATHER DRESSING LIKE HIPPES OR PUTTING SAFTY PINS IN THERE FACE.SO ,HOW DOES A BAND WITH FOUR AVERAGE MUSICIANS MAKE THE BIGGEST IMPACT,WELL THAY DID THE SMART THING AND DID WHAT ALICE COOPER DID,SOME MUSICIANS MIGHT LOVE TO BE BROKE(I DONT KNOW ANY),BUT OTHERS WANT TO BE NOTICED.YOUR NOT TRICKING ANYONE IF YOUR GIVEING THEM WHAT THAY WANT THATS ROCK AND ROLL JACK,IT ALL COMES DOWN TO TASTE.AND GOSH DARNET KISS IS JUST MORE FUN TO WATCH, A TRUE PARTY BAND.NO MATER WHAT PEOPLE SAY,ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC IS ABOUT FUN,HAVING A GOOD TIME,ESCAPING THE BULLSHITERY (YES THATS A WORD) OF LIFE, IF ONLY FOR A LITTLE WHILE. ITS BEEN THAT WAY FROM WILLE DIXON TO MARILYN MANSON...EVERY BAND HAS IT'S STRENGHS AND WEAKNESES .ROCK AND ROLL IS NOT ABOUT WHO'S MORE PROFICIANT THEN THE OTHER GUY,THATS CRAZY. THATS ALSO WHY I DONT LISTON TO JAZZ
SO YES GEDDY LEE IS A GREAT BASS PLAYER.GENE SIMMONS IS NOT.BUT IN A CROWDED ROOM SAY GEDDY LEE OR RUSH,THEN SAY GENE SIMMONS OR KISS ...NOW WHAT WAS THE QUESTION ?

I liked Flea's work on the latest RHCP album a lot. I also like Adam Clayton's work...maybe understated but he's got great tone and really locks into the beat. Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten knock me out too!

Check out Jeff Beck's bass player Tal Wilkenfeld. I saw her perform with Beck on Eric Clapton's Crossroads 2007 CD. She's in her 20s and comes from Australia. Besides touring with Beck she has also toured with Chick Corea. Incredibly player!
Also another of my favorite bass players is Billy Sheehan. Check him out with Steve Vai on Eric Clapton's first Crossroads (2006) CD.

I'll check out The Romantic Warriors...thanks. That Steve Vai/Ry Cooder jam is one of my favorites also. I've seen Steve Vai perform solo and with Dweezil Zappa in Zappa Plays Zappa, then got to meet him a month later at NAMM Show which was rerally exciting.
Also got to meet and go to a private Joe Satriani concert this year. Have you seen or heard Satriani's G3? The other 2 players vary. Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen have been some of the players with Satriani.

Would love to get to a NAMM show. Ifrequent a lot of musician sites and, have heard rave reviews. The Gibson (by invite only) supposedly, had their greatest show ever. You certainly have good taste in guitar players! Satriani gives a great live show. I saw Eric Johnson open for BB King in Canandaigua,NY some years ago...Great! As for Malmsteen...I have 3 of his CD's. I am always amazed at his ability to evolve his Classical and rock talents. Some years back i opened for Leslie West and Billie Joel and was awed by their talents then. These were the club and college circuit days, before "Mountain" and before Billy Joel dumped his thieving agent. You might want to check out a little blues number; a compilation between Leslie West and the late Albert Collins, doing "Stormy Monday" (rare)!

I bet that compilation is awesome! I'll have to look for it. Thanks! I saw Mountain perform a few months ago when I was taking photos for the opening band. I didn't get to meet Leslie West but did meet Corky Laing after missing him at NAMM a few weeks before.
I love going to the winter NAMM Show out here. It's a 4-day event and I'm usually there all 4-days. The after-hour parties are incredible with some of the hottest musicians performing at their sponsor's party. It's well worth the days of recovery afterwards.

LUV, you are absolutely killin' me!!! Rush bores you? What are you smoking?!? Is the ozone too thick up there in NY? We've had our disagreements, and I respect your opinion, but I must put my foot down on this one. you've gone too far this time missy. I ought to put you over my knee!!! I'm calling Geddy right now!!
oh yea...Gene was an accountant before he started KISS, I read in an interview years ago they went for the costumes because they even knew they weren't that good, and they wanted to make money and get laid.....how esoteric......
OK, I have to chime in here. Geddy Lee is one of the BEST bass players ever. Rush was and is amazing, but I guess you have to be a musician to fully appreciate what he does on the bass guitar. Of course I have to mention Alex Lifeson and Neil Pert of Rush as well because that are equally great.
That being said: I don't believe that Gene Simmons is one of the worst bass players either. I thought that although technically speaking he was not great,I do think he was a solid bass player and very entertaining.
Anyone heard of John Gallagher from a band called "Raven" He is a great bass player.

Does everyone forget Bootsy Collins?
Sting (very good timing with a fat sound)
Robert Trujillo
Definately Geddy Lee and Victor Wooten.
John Pattitucci
Otille
But what about the bass players who really knew bass and did their job as a bass player? Doobie Bros. and Boston (for example). They kept time and knew when to throw the bass run into a song to keep it from sounding thin.
Worst Bass player - Motley Crue, Poison - most of the hair bands that played the bare minimum to get to by. Best way to check a good bass player - play along with them. If you get bored in the first three minutes - they sucked

Ray
PS - I am also a musician - guitarist and some keyboarding
I agree with you brother

Gene wasn't great but he sure had attitude. I still like old Kiss. I don't care what anyone says.
Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten are probably the best virtuoso bassists
Tony Levin, Chris Squire, Ronnie Lane (The Faces), Paul McCartney, Glenn Cornick (original Jethro Tull bassist), John Entwistle, and John Paul Jones are some of the best with feeling.
Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers), Dusty Hill (ZZ Top), and Tommy Shannon are great bare=bones, true-grit players
Roger Waters is okay.
Ashton Fletcher is a Baltimore, Md local who is a briliant bassist.

I'm not going to argue about KISS. I like KISS...well, the original KISS anyway. Peter Criss was a great drummer who actually took lessons from the great Gene Krupa. Ace Frehley was/is a great musician. Paul Stanley is a great showman, but a mediocre musician. But Gene Simmons is less than mediocre. His singing voice is better than Paul's, but he sucks as bass guitarist. He couldn't keep time if you gave him a clock.
Geddy Lee may be a good musician, but I'm not a fan of Rush.
IMO, Jack Bruce is the greatest. He was great with double bass AND bass guitar. He was a fantastic jazz, blues, and rock n roll musician.
