Best I'd have to say is either Flea or Geddy Lee.
Worst would have to be Bobby Dall from Poison. I think I could play better than him, and I've never even picked up a bass!

Steve Harris
Geddy Lee
James Jamerson
Gene Simmons
Flea
Geezer Butler
Those are my favs...
Bag on Gene all you want, but that whole band was an example of less is more...
Neither Ace nor Gene were technical players, but what the did was tasty IMHO.
Steve Harris, Geddy, and Gene are my three biggest influences... followed by Cliff Williams.

Jaco Pastorius - withoug any doubts. Played with him in the 60's in Ft. Lauderdale. No one better. Just went to a memorial for him last year. Seeing him live was a musicians dream. Jaco, you are truly missed.

Best--Jack Cassidy of the Jefferson Airplane. Jack Bruce is very good technically and Paul McCartney plays very melodic bass lines, but Cassidy is the only player who can do both.
Honorable mention to John Entwistle of the Who; not many bassists faster than the Ox...

I forgot James Jamerson; he's the guy you hear on pretty much every Motown 45 from 1961-70. As he was purely a session man he does not get a lot of credit apart from hardcore Motown fans.

Victor Wooten and Les Claypool are tops. Flea is dynamite, too! I, also, agree w/ all the others and their picks for the best. The worst has gotta be that hack that was touring w/ The Cure not long ago. He's on their DVD, too. Gene Simmons isn't all that, but at least he can play in key and he's a solid rocker. He is Kiss!

Luv dear, first, I absolutely agree with your worst pik. Gene.....don't get me started on Kiss..... Jaco & Jack are monsters....and I am old school, kinda like you....but older school......
I pick....
Chris Squire
Geddy Lee
Mel Schacher
Thelonius Monk
James Myung
Tim Bogart
Billy Sheehan..............$20 to the person who can name the bands these guys played with.
If you "google" it,you cheated.....go back to school.
nice topic LW.....
I only know a few groups Billy Sheehan has been with, but I am a fan of his. I've known him to be with Talas, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, and he's done tours with Steve Vai. Those are the only ones I know of, although I'm quite aware that there's more.

Familiar with some of those others?
tcode, YES. Stanley is a friggin' monster, big interview with him in vintage guitar magazine this month. He is all into acoustic bass these days. I miss school daze.

I have to admit, I haven't read every post here, so he may already be on the list, but if not, my pick for the best would be Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead. The guy's amazing. The Dead have always been known for long, flowing sets where one song sort of melts into another. Well during those epic journeys, the other band members will fade in and out during the songs, but Phil's pounding bassline is ALWAYS thundering away. It's the shore upon which the other band members' waves break.
Christian McBride is pretty amazing too, but I prefer his work on the acoustic, standup bass when he's playing jazz to his regular day-job, playing electric for Sting.
Oteil Burbridge (sp?) of the Allman Brothers is pretty astounding as well.
Worst... Hmmm, tough to really think of BAD ones. Bass is a hard instrument to really screw up badly with. Most of the time, the bad ones are just mediocre. Not really a fan of Mike Gordon or Les Claypool. I've seen both and been seriously underwhelmed both times, so for lack of a clearer answer, I'll use them as my picks for worst.

If I remember it right it was sometime during the fall of 1978,although I could be off by as much as a year(you know, memory loss, but just for a few hours)where Keith Richards was arrested while in Canada and the result of all the legal hoopla was that he had to pay some astronomical fine and the way he did that was to quickly organize a whirlwind tour across America with a few of his friends and raise the money that way. They called themselves "The New Barbarians" and they made a stop in SLC at the old Salt Palace one night and I was there,so I got to hear and see him,Ron Wood, some other guys who I don't remember(memory loss?)and one of my favorite bass players, The madman himself,Stanley Clarke. Great Show. Robert

no offense dude but by refusing to use a pick you're constricting your playing. why shouldn't you use all the tools available to you? it's fun to open up to new styles and techniques so give it a try sometime

John Entwistle
Marcus Miller
Dennis Dunaway
Lemmy Kilmister
Victor Wooten
no sense picking bad bass players. I'd rather just focus on the good ones.

And just what is it that makes Gene Simmons a BAD bassist? I admit he's no Sheehan, Harris, or Lee, but he's not a BAD bassist.
I have seen MANY bands in concert - including the original KISS in 78, KISS with Vinnie Vincent, KISS with Kulick, and the original KISS on the reunion tour in 96.
All in all KISS has been on of the tightest bands, musically, and sound wise, I have ever seen. (The Vinnie Vincent version was the least entertaining).
One of the worst sounds and sloppiest performances I have ever seen was Whitesnake - incidentally Rudy Sarzo was playing bass at that show.
Perhaps you don't like KISS's music - that's your perrogative - musical taste is subjective, and only snob thinks there tastes are BETTER than someone else's. But as far as being a BAD bassist, I have to totally disagree with your opinion of Gene Simmons.
In case you wonder -i like MANY types of music - jazz, rock, metal, blues, classical, rockabilly, even some country.
Ray
PS - I am also a musician - guitarist and some keyboarding
I've seen KISS numerous times throughout the years and do find Gene Simmons to be one of the great BASS players in the industry. He demonstrates great showmanship minus any substances that could defect that showmanship. Gene Simmons still rocks as great now as he did when he started his professional career back in the mid 70's LOL .... but to each is own

This is simple... Best AND Worst Bassist:
Jaco P.
Yep, I said it. Sure he transformed bass playing concepts. Sure, he was "adventurous" enough to rip the frets from his bass before anyone else (as long as you ignore the centuries of upright bass use in symphonies and bands). Those are the qualities that rate him as one of the best.
Getting beaten to death in an alleyway because you threw your life down the neck of a bottle of booze? Well... that's why he's the worst. No free points here for being stupid.

Im a bass player myself. and looking for a rock band ( hard to metal) I can play classic also... there I go again lol

If you knew anything about Jaco...you would know his main problem was mental illness...he was bi polar as they come...many people with mental problems..drink and drug..and he is not the first artist to throw his life away as you say....Pray to God you never have to step into mental health issues shoes and get called stupid....where is your compassion...
If you say that about him...you must think that about every other musician that died from not making the best choices in life.... And there are MANY..
