deathwish; Good correction, Jesus was simply making it clear that in order to be perfect, one needs to put all earthly possessions aside, and follow Him, and Him only. We cannot serve both God and money, we will love one or the other. Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all of your earthly needs will be taken care of by Him. But do we do this today. And indeed for any human to find salvation by their own means is impossible. But with God all things are possible.

I am no Bible scholar, but it would seem that the Babylon of relevance today is the Babylon of Revelation 18, which would not seen to be a reference to ancient Babylon at all (by the way, I thought it was Rome that sacked Jerusalem in 70AD). Also, the buying and selling which can only take place through the mark of the beast is now becoming possible because of the internet. So many mysteries are yet to be made clear, but they certainly do make clear that the Bible is addressing things which are taking place today. And the answers for today's problems are to be found there as well.

Anyway, anything more on this and I will start a new thread. Bible truth and relevance for today. Let us all grow as one in Christ, through the Holy Spirit.

They are trying to use writings written in the Iron Age to solve the problems of modern man, and it ain't working people. And as for all this so-called prophesy in "Revelations", language that vague can be twisted to mean almost anything.

Well it is really shocking that it was not good to kill, steal, lie, cheat etc. in the past as it is now in modern times. WOW that makes the bible as relevant today as it was in the past. Funny Confucius knew that thousands of years before Christ or the old testament was written.

Point well made, and the Buddha knew it also.

You can always be another Mohammed and write your own book to fit/justify your lifestyle. Or leave it up to the government or lawyers/judges to dictate moral policy - that allways works.

That was well written. Highly educated people like lawyers, judges and yes, politicians. Someone a couple of centuries ago wrote a statement that goes something like: "With all of the genocide, and childish temper tantrums and cruel ways of execution given in the bible, it sounds to me more like a book about the antics and going-ons of a demon, than a god."
When mad-men, trying to hide under the cloak of religion, commit genocide and murder hundreds of innocent children and women my feeling is that it is just and proper to wage war against them. I know Muslims in my community that are hard working and are respected in every way by the community, but in the mid-east evidently there are some that are deranged and can't kill enough. I respect the Koran and have read some out of it, having spent most of my adult life learning about different religions and I feel sure that what some of those who breathe out slaughter and hatred are doing is definitely not what Mohammed meant when he wrote the book. Well, I've wrote enough about the subject for now I guess, except for a few more comments along the line of the bible being out of date. Out of our United States has come everything and our science has benefited the entire world. Cars, Trains, Computers, Medicine, Air Conditioners, Radio, Television, advanced methods of surgery, the light bulb, AC current that makes homes a luxurious place to live in, the list is endless. Everything that benefits the entire world has come from America and our science. It is a country well worth defending, at all costs. I guess for centuries the Western World was cloaked in ignorance and superstition, using the bible as a guide. I am thankful that now it is different, though I certainly feel that freedom to worship as we see fit, including ALL religions, is a worthwhile facet of our country also. I do like to argue when statements seem illogical to me, and some argue back, and to me that is fit and proper. Blessings, St Bernard, (the dog).

What’s your point queen, that the truths of Buddha and Confucius are as irrelevant as the truths in the Bible? The question wasn’t whether there were other teachings before the Bible, but whether the Bible is still relevant today. Both Buddha and Confucius lived about five hundred years before Christ, not thousands of years. And the idea that it was “not a good idea” to kill, steal, lie, cheat, (the ten commandments) that you mock shock at being revealed in scripture actually came from an older book of the Bible written several hundred years before their time.

Although the teachings of Confucius were more about political and social reform, rather then being truly religious in nature, his teachings certainly are relevant in today’s politically corrupt world. The basic tenants of Buddha’s teachings are a beautiful exegesis of the state of our existence, and the world would be a better place if there were more people willing to follow his eightfold path and ten basic precepts.

stbernard, what difference does the age that great truth comes from make. Truth is truth, we are not talking physical science here. The world is not flat, but love is still love, and it has not been proven that becoming more loving is the wrong path to take. Jesus did not teach the “stay between the lines” rule of the law, including the ten commandments. In fact He came to free us from the law. He came to teach the transformation of our minds and hearts (which can only be accomplished through His Spirit). Loving-kindness, forgiving, non judging (while remaining aware of right and wrong), were the attitudes He taught, the truth to set us free. Unfortunately, knowledge is not power, applied knowledge is power, and in the past two thousand years, we, as human beings, have not gotten very good at applying those lessons. And, even more unfortunately, in many cases, Christians (me included) are the worst offenders of violating the very precepts of loving non-judgment that they profess to believe in.

And again, concerning “the iron age” that these truths came out of, I don’t see our high tech science solving today’s problems. In many ways, our reliance on it is destroying our societies, our health, and our planet. And however you think the prophecies can be twisted, all interpretations seem to point to this being what would happen in the last days.

hotlicks, what papers do you read? Genocide, polygamy (or even more, infidelity) and slavery can still be found in the world today. And concerning the brilliant judges and lawyers of the world, you cannot legislate ethical living. As mentioned above, you can try to control the way people behave by passing laws, but for the world to change, peoples minds and hearts need to be changed. Lawyers and judges cannot do this. Why the God of the Bible allowed, and even commanded, some of the things to take place that He did (and does) I do not know, and will not try to defend. But the overarching call to love one another, that Jesus commanded of His disciples is the one best answer to the worlds dilemmas.

In all fairness I have heard people say that Louis Pasteur did more for humanity than Jesus ever did, or the person who invented eye glasses, but I guess Jesus wasn't concerned about bettering our physical lives on this planet by teaching invention and science. He delt with the fact that humans die, and gave hope for an eternal life, and tried to set down guidelines about how to achieve it.
