Had to make a painful decision this morning regarding my 20 year old cat Petey. I will have him put to sleep on Weds. 13. Gonna be a grim day for me, and the tears are already flowing. Wish Whale could come down here.....but..alas. I found this poem that is so beautifully written by one that knows what the love of a cat is like. Thought I'd share.

Four Feet In Heaven by Alice Chase

Your favorite chair is vacant now,
No eager purrs to greet me,
No softly padded paws to run
Ecstatically to me.

No coaxing rubs, no plaintive cry
Will say it's time for feeding-
I've put away your bowl
And all the things you won't be needing.

But I will miss you, little friend,
For I could never measure
The happiness you brought to me
The comfort and the pleasure.

And since God put you here to share
In earthly joy and sorrow
I'm sure there'll be a place for you
In Heaven's bright tomorrow.

Oh man.....this is gonna suck. I know many of you out there are cat lovers too. Give em all a hug and pet from me. Thanks folks.

ks - I am so very sorry - hope that this will bring you some comfort in your time of sorrow.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

ks...so very sorry to hear of this. As a pet owner (and lover), I know the depth of love we feel for you pets. My sister recently had to make the same decision for her cat and we cried together. God bless you, my friend...my prayers are with you.

Ks, I am so sorry that you are loseing your darling cat. It is very hard I had to put my little 17 yr old dog down three yrs ago and still cry over her. I was able to hold her while they gave her the shot. She was not scared and went very easy. I think she is still here with me . Give all the love you can til the very last.

I really feel for you. 3 summers ago, I had to have my 21 year old Max put down. I'm sitting here crying while I write this. He came to me when I needed companionship the most and he was a great four legged friend. It was one or those terrible decisions to make. I will sure be thinking of you on the 13th. I wish I come there and help you get through it.

I'm so glad that I decided to hold him while they did it. At least he didn't have to go through it all alone.

You darling, wonderful people, (she says through her streaming eyes.) I knew just who I could count on with this post. And none of you let me down.

I know that we all have "furry" friends waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you so much for the show of compassion. You humble me with your kindness and understanding.

KS, Petey living to age 20 is a testament to the wonderful care and love you show him. He's a very lucky kitty! Spend the next few days cuddling and know having him is a wonderful gift. I'll be thinking of you

Ks, We put three pets to sleep within one year, they were all old. We had them cremated as was my husband's wish and he wanted the ashes. When my husband died he wanted his ashes to be placed in a certain spot. When I did that, I also put their ashes with him. Seems strange but he loved the animals so much it just seemed the right thing to do.

Thank you for sharing the poem, I can feel for you. I always went right out and got another one. It did not take the other pets place, but they made their own. God bless you as it is losing a family member.

I'm crying just thinking about the experience of putting my little Scruffy (mini-poodle) to sleep about 3 years ago.

Very traumatic, but you can't let your pet suffer because you don't want to go through it.

I'll be thinking about you and Petey on Wed.

KS

I worked a K-9 for several years and when she retired the department I work for gave her to me. She was my partner and friend for many years and after retirement led a good life for many years. I had to put her down about 3 years ago because I knew she was in so much pain and the vet told me it would be best for her. Took her home and prayed a couple days about it before I coud take her back to the vet. Have been doing this job for 29 years, have dealt with many things, that day was one of the hardest in my life. I understand how you feel. I still miss her as you will miss Petey.
