Thumping fast techno music, speedily flashing lights, people dancing frantically, people drinking very large quantities of bottled water, group hugs, going deaf from the loudness of the rapid fire techno music.....
What I described is what happened at raves back in the 1990s. Raves were very popular techno dance parties that were held back in the 1990s.
I've never been to a rave, but my brother was a DJ in the 1990s. He started out as a hip hop/new jack swing/reggae DJ, but then shifted into being a Rave DJ because he could make thousands of dollars in just one night of playing at a Rave. And the promoter he worked with made tons of money off those Raves.
But Raves died out after the 1990s.

What were 80s raves like?
I only know about the 90s raves based on what my DJ brother and his promoter friend told me about them. I remembered seeing them counting STACKS of money after their rave events.
But I wasn't a rave type...I've never liked techno music. In the 1990s, I was into hip hop, new jack swing, r and b, reggae, and Native American music, so raves weren't my thang!
(I didn't discover zouk music until 2003 when a Haitian girlfriend introduced me to the sweet sounds of zouk!)
Wench, are you saying that juke joints were still thriving in the 1990s? I wouldn't know because the furthest I ever got into the South was George Washington's home in Alexandria, VA, but I have been at the Atlanta airport a few times on flights to the West Coast. Love that Georgia airport food!

In the mid to late 1980s a wave of psychedelic and other electronic dance music, most notably acid house-music and Techno, emerged and caught on in the clubs, warehouses, and free-parties first in Manchester in the mid 1980s and then later London. In many ways what would become known as the Rave scene, was influenced by the Northern Soul scene which throughout the late 1960s and through the 1970s and 1980s had involved large groups of mainly working class kids dancing all night to rare US soul records. With the end of the UK's textile industry in the northwest, suddenly large mills and warehouses became empty and unauthorized parties were held in them. The first warehouse parties in Manchester were organized by the group The Stone Roses back in 1985, when to get around the licensing laws they would play a gig and book a line up of DJs under the disused arches of Piccadilly train station.
What were 80s raves like?

Thanks for the history lesson, Kawk. I never knew that raves began in the UK in the 1980s.
You know...raves in 1990s Connecticut were also held in warehouses and abandoned factories. Lots of factories started going out of business in Connecticut in the 1980s and 1990s, so there were plenty of such buildings for raves to be held.
Perhaps raves developed because of the ending of the Industrial Revolution!

Yes I went to some raves in the late 80's early 90's. No I never took a date there. Always went with groups of friends.
Tended to be lots of LSD/Extacsy at them.
Usually they were fun.
Went to one at the Concourse in San Fransisco one time, it was nasty. It was crowded and hot the walls and ceiling were dripping drops of moisture. It felt like it was starting to rain. We left early and went to a club instead.

Raving is different from clubbing in that raving means that you're partying at a rave, while clubbing means you're partying at a nightclub.

I'm afraid to.
I do know that once I saw my brother and his promoter friend rolling a bunch of coins to get ready to bring to the bank to exhcange for paper dollars.
I said "boy you guys have lots of coins there".
They smiled and said "We know"
5 days later, I discovered that all of my quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies, and even Canadian coins were gone...stolen! I think they found my secret stash spot for my coins, and they stole it!
But what can I do? That was back in 1992!

They finally shut down the raves here in Dallas after there were a couple of ODs on roofies of all things. But, they were popular here in DFW with the 18-21 YO's up until about 5 years ago when this happened.
