Oh, how sad for you.
You've "loved" some girl you just fantasize about, but never had the backbone to ask out yourself, and your friend must honor your fantasy and keep the girl off limits so you can live out your fantasy for the rest of your life. Never taking a risk, never making a move, just living in happyland in your thoughts forever.
And yet, you forget that she gets to choose to date who she wants to and doesn't have to be the object of your secret fantasy. If you truly loved this woman and knew you'd never make a move then her happiness should be more important than your fantasy. If she is happy with your friend, and presumably he is a good man since he's your friend, of course, then be happy for them.
Take this as a lesson. Faint heart never won fair maiden.

And the fact that he said his friend hid it from him just proves that OPie is one of those depressed downer types that all their closest friends are afraid to share anything wonderful going on in their life because his sucks so badly they would make him even sadder.
