Bob Costas slams ESPN over Caitlyn Jenner ESPY courage award

Bob Costas called ESPN's decision to award Caitlyn Jenner with the Arther Ashe Courage Award a "crass exploitation play."

The veteran broadcaster said that while he has no qualms over Jenner's transition from a man to a woman, he believes there are other more worthy candidates in the world of sports.

"In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could’ve found someone -- and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner -- who was much closer actively involved in sports, who would’ve been deserving of what that award represents," Costas said on "The Dan Patrick Show."

He continued to say that ESPN's decision to award Jenner was merely to "attract eyeballs."

"I think this is just a play to pump up the audience, the way lots of things are put on television to attract eyeballs -- not because of the validity but because of whatever the kind of gawker factor is."

That's not to say he doesn't find Jenner's story courageous, he said.

"That's not to say that it doesn't take some measure of personal courage to do what Caitlyn Jenner has done," he said. "I wish Caitlyn Jenner well, and anyone — even if most of us do not fully understand it — anyone seeking to find the identity they're comfortable with and to live the happiest possible life without intentionally hurting anyone else...I think we're moving toward a more tolerant society, and that's all for the good, and I wish Caitlyn all the happiness in the world and all the peace of mind in the world."

Costas isn't the first to cry foul over Jenner's win. Many took to social media to criticize ESPN for not choosing Mount St. Joseph basketball player Lauren Hill, who battled brain cancer while staying on the university team. The 19-year-old lost her fight against cancer on April 10.

Hill wasn't the only overlooked candidate people were made about. Iraq veteran Noah Galloway, who lost most of an arm and a leg fighting, but still competes in extreme sports and almost won this season's "Dancing With the Stars," also had hundreds of tweets from fans irate over Jenner's choice.

i agree Somewhat with Bob Costas imo because Jenner's sex change came officially public just this April while other candidates were better timely qualified candidates for the past year and showed courage in their achievements. .. .i do believe this show is looking for ratings esp since it's going to be on ABC TV...

Jenner is one of greatest athletes ever as a male but he back then coulda never done it as a woman unless Jenner coulda competed against women ..

Anyone want to add to this..thanks

Will you watch the show just to witness what Jenner may be wearing or "her" look...or what Jenner says accepting " her" reward.

Is this courage on a decision to change one's sex???

It's called retirement fund.
10 years from now he'll lose the tits and claim he was born a man and should remain one.

I agree with Costas 1000%. Lauren Hill is much more deserving. It's courageous for people to accept what they were born with and make the best of it. It's courageous to run into a burning building to save lives. It is NOT courageous what Jenner is doing. And I wish people will stop calling Jenner "she" or "her". He will always have male chromosomes no matter how many hormone shots or plastic surgery he gets. I would have more respect for Jenner if he turned down the award and admitted he isn't worthy of it.

One cannot change their sex.

I boycotted ESPN years ago. As well as HGTV. Actually I haven't had cable for over a year. And I do not miss it.

WTF is going on in this world.

Jenner may be a jackass but not a woman.

Totally ridiculous.

I am no Bob Costas fan but in this case I tend to agree with him, just don't feel that Jenner's doing what he claims is his natural sexual identity change, is deserving of any kind of award.

I'm sure Jenner had more guts than any of you homophobic morons that don't have the capacity to address issues of sexual preference.

Costas just took a hit on his future income the way Trump did with insulting Mexicans!

Bruce just wants to f**k guys and NOT be called a Homosexual ...

so he finds a doctor wh*re who will take the money to cut his d*ck off.

Castity Bono wants to f**k girls and not be a Lesbian ... same thing different day.

I say Chaz Bono and Kaitly Jenner hookup and get married.

The GOOD NEWS .. is as an adult you want to use the 'IT' bathroom with the Transgender people.

Do not matter if you are a guy ... having a piss in front of Bruce Jennery with tits on ..

or having a piss in front of Chaz Bono with a .... it certainly is not a d*ck IT is wearing.

But it is all GOOD ...

Same for any women who wants to use the IT bathroom ...

Chaz Bono seen p*ssy before .. use to have one.

Kaitlyn Jenner got a surgical p*ssy ...

So they do not have any complaint of 'STAY OUT OF MY BATHROOM YOU PERVERT !!!

I love being me sometimes.

sumbuddie wear blind sea

Dr.
The award is intended for athletes who have faced extraordinary challenges.

Jenner has not been an athlete for 40 yrs.

And, while it may take courage to make a choice and follow ur convictions (as costas said)
Bruce making this choice cannot compare to the courage of a young girl facing her imminent, premature death with grace.

You should read about the meaning of the Arthur Ashe award before declaring what it's about.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Ashe_Courage_Award

You're right that his choice cannot compare with the cancer patient, but that's exactly what you attempted to do!

Military men in America are not heroes, rather they are chumps. Their job is to go abroad, invade, kill, torture, and harass people in their homeland so that America's leading capitalists can later steal that nation's riches and rape their workers.

Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy." -- Henry Kissinger

-------------

Excerpts from a speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.

I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.

I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.

There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism.

It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.

I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service.

I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested.

During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

You'd pee your pants before you'd say that to their faces. It seems there is no one that you respect. If it weren't for military men, we would be a third world nation and you wouldn't even have the freedom of expressing yourself on these discussion groups.

No, the legless, armless, military morons and their will-work-for-food veteran buddies are very easy to recognize. My experience is that as long as you toss them a quarter they will let you ramble on and on about anything you want.

There's plenty of homeless vets in the street, but you can't assume all the ones saying they're vets really are. I always ask for them to show me a V.A. card and if they can display it, I help them out.

Ah yes, the VA. That's another place where you'll find plenty of crippled, military men who can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

Here's the thing, right-wing-propaganda-dude, there are actually plenty of military men who know exactly the same thing I know. The gangster-capitalist elite f**ked them right up the a**hole. They know they weren't fighting off evil invaders of America. They know they weren't fighting for my freedom of speech. They know they were sent to the other side of the world to kill, torture and harass people living in abject poverty who were of no threat what so ever to the American people. They were only over there getting killed and maimed because America's ruling-class capitalists seek global hegemony and the domination of every lucrative market on the planet. In fact, I would remind you that Smedley Butler was a USMC Major-General.

Jenner is the text book definition of a lesbian trapped in a mans body...

He grew TITS....

That is not worthy of a Arthur Ashe award...

but from what I have read he is not gay...he is still attracted to women and still has a penis...and he is not attracted to men at all...

Now if you want to be politically correct and call Caitlyn (Bruce) Jenner She? go ahead...

Me personally since he has a d*ck...I will consider him a he, regardless of how he dresses or fixes his hair...

He just has tits now and he dresses and acts like a women...lol

The ESPYS had a record ratings night on Wednesday thanks to a move to ABC and a moving speech by Caitlyn Jenner.

The sports-oriented ESPN awards show pulled in 7.7 million viewers airing on its sister network ABC. This was a 250% boost from last year's telecast, which was on ESPN and had brought in 2.2 million viewers, according to the network.

The awards hit its viewership peak from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. when it brought in roughly 8.5 million viewers. The show went up 1.9 million from its first hour to its final hour.

she really lit into his behind! Jenner is currently being sued by several parties
related to the crash.

Quote from 61falcon:
I am no Bob Costas fan but in this case I tend to agree with him, just don't feel that Jenner's doing what he claims is his natural sexual identity change, is deserving of any kind of award.
