donovaninsurrey Surrey, BC age: 39	i have agoraphobia ( the fear of open/public places and large crowds ) and i only go out to work or groceries. over the last 10 years its pretty much totally desocialized me. people tell me all the time to just go out like its no big deal but it gives me panic attacks. its also kept me single for almost 11 years. does anyone know how to overcome this?

phoenix63 Irvine, CA age: 44	I was diagnosed with Agoraphobia although it was a huge misdiagnosis. Although this doctor was WAY off, he did prescribe Xanax for panic attacks and Agoraphobia. That's what he thought that I had when in fact it was just simple anxiety. You may want to mention the medication to your doctor. My understanding of Agoraphobia is something that I'm glad came as a misdiagnosis. Good luck to you. I hope you keep posting as to how everything is going for you.

Have you always had this condition, or is it a result of some crisis? Is there something that you would fear more -- or want to a greater extent than what you fear? Some people find that focusing on a greater fear/desire as they go out to a populated area helps. Some people find taking "baby steps" help. For example, look at pictures of groups of people, listen to recordings made by groups of people, have others help you by gradually increasing the number of people in an area. etc. There is hypnosis that helps some. No one can ever realize the impact of others fears. Sounds like you can at least go to work. Not sure what your work is, but some people can not even stand the idea of stepping out of the area they call home.

I've read that you can do it in "baby steps"...as in: Going out to a place, at first, where you know there will be relatively few people...staying focused on your purpose...controlled breathing...learning not to be overcome by the strangeness of your enviroment. These are some tips and methods I have read about. Obviously, I strongly recommend you contact a counselor to help you through this. It's really very curable. And it's having such a detrimental effect on your life right now, that you should want to work on overcoming this disorder. Many people have dealt with panic attacks at some time in their life. It's more common than most people realize. And let me emphasize---VERY CURABLE. Contact your city's County Health Dept. and they will find you someone to help you. You say they didn't SEEM to want to help you, or did they outright refuse to help you? Did you pursue this with them and ask where you could receive help?
