I don't want to get too philosophical, but recent events have me accepting the stereotype that men have a more difficult time committing to a long term relationship, generally speaking, than women.
It seems that every time I feel as if I'm at risk of falling so deeply in love with a woman that I will be vulnerable I do something to sabotage things.
Is this some form of evolutionary defense mechanism?

I kept coming back to your thread, Dude. At first, didn't know what to say. But then remembered some of my Anthropoligical Studies & started thinking........It is Man's intrinsic nature to procreate......BUT........committment is the sign of the higher evolutionary scale......so in my opinion.......and only mine......if you can't commit, then obviously, at this time, you haven't met your ideal mate.

Very well stated.
Maybe the biggest fear of all is not ever meeting that exactly 'right' person, then...

have no fear of commitment on my end..my fears are of the commitment of the other.. having been in one of those long term relationships.21 years..
only to have her find another while, i was putting her through nursing school.. but my heart says beware...
and there is someone out there for me...she will drop from out of nowhere and land in my life...
it will happen for most of us.. i truly feel that...

Fear is because it is unknown of what the future may have in store for you. No one ever knows the future and what it brings.

i think it is only natural that when someone has been hurt we all tend to put up walls to protect us and it take a long time to take those walls down
