Hi all! 
I've been hanging around a couple other boards and thought I'd say hello here as well. I have 2 Labs, Edie (choc) will be 5 in December and Emma (blk) is about 6 months younger.
We also recently adopted a sweet little mixed breed from the shelter as a new companion for my father. The shelter's best guess is a Terrier / Dachshund mix but curiosity is more than Dad can bear so we're doing a "Wisdom Panel" DNA analysis to give us a breakdown of the breeds. It's not 100% accurate but it should be fun to see what they say.
Just wondering if anyone else has done it and if so, what did you find out? Was it close to your best guess?
To those who haven't, would you if you had a pup and didn't know it's lineage?

I would do it if the test was not invasive, if I had the money to spend and if I wanted to know. Wow, that would be fun to have that kind of money and to find out how it works. However, I have too many pressing bills to be willing to spend money on a DNA test for anything unless there was an absolute need to know. The breed does not matter as much to me as the current temperment after the pup is already born.
Sounds like it really would be fun. Please let us know how it turns out.

That makes perfect sense. I keep telling myself it does have a pragmatic aspect, as some breeds can be predisposed to certain health concerns and it could explain some temperament or behavior issues but mostly it'll just be fun to see. 
It's a blood draw so I didn't think that was too bad. I kinda thought they could swab her mouth, guess I watch too much Forensic Files.

Just seen a DNA test you can buy in one of those dog catalogues. "In the Company of Dogs" for $119. It only consist of a swab of the mouth to send in to them and they tell you all about your pooch. A little less invasive than blood work, but hey they get they every year for heart worm anyway, and they don't seem to mind it too much.
You get the results back in 4-6 weeks printed on a Certificate of Breed Analysis.
It's called Canine Heritage Breed Test.
Yeah, it would be interesting to find out for sure about the breed, mostly for all the reasons you posted above. I have a Manchester terrier who everyone thinks is a min-pin, even the vet originally thought so. They do look quit a bit alike, but the breeds temperament is very different.
Be sure to let us know how the test comes out. Inquiring minds need to know..

Of course, you have to have your vet do the blood draw. That's not a big deal for me because I have my dog on the Banfield Wellness Plan. It doesn't cost me for an office visit & I doubt they'd charge me much, if anything, for the blood draw since what they need seems to be in the kit. One of these days I might just have to run the little guy's DNA.
My first priority right now is signing him up for Bark Busters. The trainer comes to your home and works with you on whatever you want to teach your dog. They have a 1 year plan and a lifetime plan. The lifetime plan costs $500, but they will work with you as much as you want for the rest of the dog's life. If the dog ever goes to a new owner, the training package goes with the dog.

I have a 2 year old Border Collie "something" who's daddy jumped over the fence to meet his mom. Mom was a pure bred BC, and the people I got him from had no idea what the father was. They said they didn't even know she had been bred. He is a beauty, but has some retriever characteristics and is a pointing fool. I am pretty sure Daddy was some kind of a bird dog. Can they tell? I too, because of the health issues with different breads, would like to know what he is.

Yup! They'd be able to tell what type of dog it was.
So they can do just a swab... poor Hazel, I should have checked around more. Hopefully she won't hold that against me. 
I'll let you know what we find out!

I want to do it if I can get the bucks. My mixed breed guy is very smart, learns his commands and tricks like a circus
dog! He is small, with a collie like face , black and white. The vet guessed him as an Aussie shep mix, my guess
is border collie /chi mix. He was left along with his litter mates in a box at the local supermarket. Chi's are the
most popular dogs in this berg. Thanks for reminding me, need to start saving my bucks to do that.
PS it is 75 dollars the the local Pet Smart here.

Hi all,
Just gonna put my two cents in here.... The shelter I was working for up until the end of March was just going into the testing phases of using those kits... They are only accurate to a certain percentage, and can only tell if your dog has major indicators of a certain number of the more common breeds...
I agree it would be fun to know, but regardless, my boy is the perfect pure-bred pound puppy, and I wouldn't trade him for anything.

I think mutts are sometimes the best choice of all. They are strong health wise and mentally because they have not had all bred out of them from overbreeding and inbreeding. You should post a pic and let us guess, then tell when the results come back. Could be fun and interesting.

It was $126 for us. I think you may be able to find it for less though.
