Be their friend and keep your distance. Be supportive but don't get too drawn in. You don't want to go anywhere too fast because it can be damaging. With time he will learn to trust you as you are there kindly reassuring him that you are by his side. Again just as friends. When he is ready let him make the move. If you go in before him he might retreat and feel that his comfort zone has been invaded. So better to just be there as a good friend. The best things can come out of a good solid friendship.
Indoubt... smart girl
You are right. It is always good to be friends first. Real friends are also hard to find in this world today.

My mom use to say; If you really love them, let them go like a butterfly, and if they come back it was meant to be.
My opinion is this; Share your feelings about him with him, ask him to share his because you want to listen and need to listen so that he will be understood so work at getting those feelings out in the open. Communication/talking about things may help. Telling that person that you really care about them and want to help them overcome their issuse of the broken heart would be a kind thing to do if you want the relationship to go to another level of committment, friendship or whatever the next step will be. I think that when I talk about something that I have a problem with another point of view is good to have and also shows that the person cares enough about me to ask. Hope this helped, good luck and do some work!
Wonderful answer ! Helps a lot. Thanks

If you try to fix it for them then you don't allow them to build any confidence in themselves. No confidence, no leader aspect.
I'm with InDoubt on this one.

You meet someone that you really like and that person likes you. But their heart has been broken and that person is afraid to let you in. What do you do to set the heart free?
I'd like to give you my version. If they dwell in the past and blame you for what they have already messed up in their lives! RUN, find a unbroken person. Those people love misery

Irishman hit the nail on the head. If someone is trying to date you and they are letting you know they have or had a broken heart, RUN. We've all had broken hearts but you don't tell a new person this. Let's face it your a rebound or will pay for what the last person has done. A broken heart mends in time. Time heals all wounds. You have to learn to love yourself and that means spend time alone, soul searching before you can love anyone else. Emotional baggage usually means hurting an innocent person.

By giving yourself & your time....by showing that you will be around when THEY decide to take that wall down. That's how you get in and let them know that you really care, by sticking around until the wall comes down...not forcing it to suit your needs.
I sure hope that makes sense...I know what I'm trying to say here...just not sure my words are conveying it correctly.
