The little gift you mentioned giving to this FWB should be easy and inexpensive. He likes cats according to what you have told us.
I would recommend something simple like a coffee cup with a photo of kitties or cats, a calendar for 2009 with cats as the theme, If he drinks whiskey perhaps some of his favorite in a gift pack. More of the massage oils used on your last date.

Big, some fun suggestions there. He plays darts. Maybe I could get him a new set of flights and offer up a game of strip darts. I have a dart board in the garage.

Doesnt work it turns bad because usually one party thinks they are to good for the other party to date in real life for me to do it it would have to be someone extremely out of my dating league
like a Brad Pitt or something

*YES! friends with benefits, most definitely work for sociopaths (ie: psychopaths), persons with narcissistic personality traits, and a whole array of other fun and fantastic, mental disorders!
who the hell needs "love?" just the sound of the "L" word makes me want to throw up all over this page. it's all so responsible, emotional, caring, boring, predictable, so damn honest. who the hell wants that? just F**K AND THROW EM OUT, then pick up that phone and speed dial the next horny b*tch with no conscience! just f**k and f**k and f**k until you can't f**k anymore, then f**k again.
and when you feel the fires of hell flaming out your d*ck, when you take a piss. just tell the doc that "trixie the demented pixie," off dh told you that FWB, were the way to go.*

I don't see a difference--casual girlfriends and FWBs are pretty much the same--limited committment.

it definitely can work for the 'uncommital minded' as long as both are open and honest about their intentions.
