I like to hug instead of shaking hands. Not a squeeze just a polite little hug. I had a guy tell me that hugs were inappropriate...that men take it wrong & think I am coming On to them. I think he's crazy! Am I wrong?
I consider it to be a very rude invasion of my personal space if I am touched by any stranger in any way. You don't know me, keep your paws off. When first introduced, those fools who come in for a hug are treated with the same consideration and respect they are showing me, and are physically prevented from doing it. Nope, never apologized for shoving someone off me and them flying into a wall, piece of furniture...and never will.

I think it depends on the situation. To me, a handshake is for business or when you are introduced to someone for the first time, like at a party or something. If you have agreed to a first date with someone, this is a person you felt a potential romantic connection with, right? So why would a hug be inappropriate? If you are comfortable hugging someone, hug them.
And the church thing blows my mind...I have been hugged in church by people I don't know way more than anywhere else, ever, and that's in both NY and Arkansas! You are in God's house feeling God's love, so to be told not to hug because of boobs is just ludicrous in my mind. Church is a place to connect with others as well as worship, so hugging there, while it makes me a little uncomfortable, is not inappropriate.

The hugging he thought was inappropriate was with friends, co-workers....not him. He thought I was "exploiting' him by hugging others. The thing is he knew I hugged before we went out. He's no longer geting hugs from me....his choice. I'm not changing who I am for anyone. He said he couldn't handle it. Oh, well.

You sound like a friend I used to know. She hugged EVERYBODY. It was just her way. None of the guys she dated seemed to have a problem with it. I think that guy just sounded insecure.
Naw, will never be a hugger myself, not like you guys, and prefer that a stranger respect my space. But hey, I even had to accept her the way she was, and brace myself for that incoming squeeze if I was going to be around her LOL Once you know the person, either deal with them the way they are, for who and what they are, or not. I get really tired of people always trying to change other people, when they aren't hurting anyone, so no real reason for it, except the personal issues of the one trying to force the changes.

Didn't I read something about a church on here and the church saying don't hug?
If so whoever goes to that church just might want to stop because the kind of church that thinks that deeply into sex has a problem. They can not distinguish sex from normal human touch.

Anybody who has a problem with a hug has a problem with their mind... if it's supposedly a friend... a strong hug and kiss on the cheek is exactly that. Women who want to send a sexual message hug with their breasts directed to the men and press them to him. If it's not a sexual hug they will hug from the chest so as not to press their nipples into his chest... sometimes known as a "church hug".

another therapist told me that i would end up getting sexual harrassment charges filed if i didn't stop hugging everyone.. that was years ago.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's (and still am!!!) and we hugged each other all the time. It was free love back then, yes, but hugging friends was the way and now, part of society thinks there has to be something wrong with something so right...what a shame.

I see nothing wrong with a gentle hug on a first meet. I prefer the gentle kiss on the hand....but that's just me. Some men, however take this friendly hug in the wrong way and see it as rubbing yourself on them...sounds crazy, I know, but I guarantee there are plenty of men who think like that.
Perhaps it depends on the season. A winter hug with a big ole bulky sweater might be more acceptable than a summer tank top hug.

I guess it depends on the church you were raised in, but we hugged everybody!!! I'm still a hugger. I realize there are times when it's not appropriate. When I meet someone for the first time, a handshake will do...but after that all bets are off. If they think I'm coming on to them, they will just have to get over themselves! If I am coming on to them, they won't have any doubt!

Some people just don't like their air space violated, or are not the affectionate kind.
When i started going back to church, it was an issue, and i had to be taught the
"church hug" how stupid!
As i got into theater more, it's more widely accepted, and i had a friend who's dad was the director of deep throat, she spent alot of time in brazil and they do the kiss on the cheek on both sides. It felt weird doing it at first, in wifes presence, but after awhile things where not an issue.

I too am not sure which one is appropriate. I really don't see anything wrong in a quick little hug. I've had women look at me funny when I just offer a hand. If I've had a chance to talk with a person online, and we arrange a meeting, I try to ask them before hand which one they are comfortable with.

I live for Hugs, it makes my day to be hugged by a pretty Lady. every club I go to I have female friends that hug me, comming in and leaveing, I need hugs, even if its just a friend, it makes the world go around, at least in my world. sometimes the girls play mad at each other because I hug one before the other, and they always bring me a beer to get a hug when I first get there, its nice to know there is a hug waitting for you when you come to our club. makes you feel special. even when your down and out that hug picks you back up. It really depends on the person.Some just don't like them.They just aren't a touchy
type person.It also depends on the setting or the situation.
