How many on here think of lying as a form of politeness? or, alternatively, you think of telling the truth as a form of ripping somebody a new one? what about value neutral authenticity?

You can tell the truth and not be hurtful. Lying is never polite. Trying to find a happy medium in the truth usually ends in a lie.

Some lies are actually kindnesses, when used judiciously. Lying for the sake of being false to your own beliefs is an injustice to yourself and to the one lied to. One should use the truth just as carefully, using courtesy as well as honesty in our dealings with others. Ripping someone a new one very rarely feels as good as you think it will. Don't we all strive for neutral authenticity? Do you Sailor?

Truth with class and sincerity is a must.
I find that men will lie to me to " protect" me from the truth and that don't realize the damage that causes for me.

I think that people have powerful pressures to speak the truth or be authentic....or indulge in some kind of cyberspace version of road rage or rant....
But I think people of good will also speak the truth. Anyway, there are face to face lies that are just considered everyday unnecessary politenss. For example, when people always ask how I'm doing, I usually lie and say "Ok, hanging in there or "not too bad". When in fact I'm usually not doing well at all, after a rigorus pre-deloyment workup. They don't really want to know of course, they're just asking out of etiquette.

You can tell someone the truth without making them feel attacked or worthless..I deal with ppl all the time that don't agree with me or me with them..Killing someone with kindness isn't rude either..It's just not being brought down to a lower level. jmo

I never understood why people find the need to lie. I tell the truth. I always call it the way I see it. It may not always make you feel better, but I never intend to hurt. Why can't more people be upfront?

Here are a few I found and I think it goes for everyone at some point and time in our lives.
To achieve power;
To test the limits;
To challenge authority;
To get something which couldn't be gotten otherwise;
To fulfill wishes;
To avoid punishment;
To protect privacy;
To protect oneself from harm;
To deny painful feelings and/or memories;
To avoid feeling trapped, embarrassed and/or threatened;
To avoid creating an awkward situation;
To experience fun/excitement;
To belong;
To protect friends from trouble;
To increase one's status;
To conceal an unintended mistake;
To appear more important, glamorous and exciting to others;
To fulfill someone's expectations;
To avoid rejection;
To compensate for not having the factual information.

I think people tend to be more untruthful online. Where else can you be whoever you want to be, say whatever you want to say, do whatever you want to do and get by with it? Cyberworld is a host for our fantasies
