Osoroho it seems that the picture you referred to was removed. I assume your question was directed to the poster because I have no visual reference.
Most of you may think you recognize the slave who led the mutiny aboard the ship "Amistad".
This actors name is Djimon Hounsou Born in Coronou Benin. I thought his road to success was remarkable considering he lived on the streets for a year before being discovered by fashion designer Thierry Mugler who made him a model leading to a movie career. He received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Amistad. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor for, "In America" becoming the first black African to be nonimated for an Oscar in 2004.
That same year Charlize Theron, a South Africa actress was nominated for her work in "Monster" making it the first time two African born actors were nominated at the same time.

Seems like we have two Black History thread which is great. I guess some enjoy reading about the Old History and some enjoy the New. Let's see what we can do about keeping with that theme. I'd like to have an review before we continue
Olderperson mentioned the Civil War. Black people volunteered to fight for the South(wore Confederate gray and he also mentioned the "Buffalo Soldiers" being given the name by Indians because they were "tough as nails".
EightInchBend mentioned Bessie Coleman and her Three First Achievements: First Black, First woman and First to receive an International Pilot's license Olderperson supplied us with a picture of a slave that was whipped when he was caught after escaping.
Some offered their opposition to the need to Black History Month. However, we will continue with the tradition.
Omega submitted a video of the Old Negro Space Program
about a group of black men who started an astronaut goup after they learn te sapce program was only for whites. The men put together a spaceship cobbled together from a school bus, used cadillac, old rocket engines, and a landing capsule. It was marveled. They had landed on the moon.
We viewed a video of entitled a Dream Realized a depiction of the journey from Martin Luther King Jr. to President Barack Obama
We discussed some really great actors and like actresses: Morgan Freeman,Halle Berry,Djimon Hounsou great supporting actor in Steven Spielberg's movie.
As we continue with the observation and enter into the month of February
We present Black Artists:
Artist: Janie McGee

the African are very creative, and they are very rich with inspiration, the african civilization was destroyed for many centuries, the Africans are very peacefull people by nature only if you dont treate them good , they may turn opposit, they are very human in their depth, and they support whoever is under oppression for they believe all human has to live in dignity and respect.
many racist hate the black for stupid reasons, when summer comes, they try to buy a little from sun, they may lay under sun to be burned a little.

No, I misquoted Olderperson. He did say that the Indians named the Black soldiers after buffalo because of the hair. This was a review if you had read the entire Thread from the beginning you would have known what Olderperson said.
Don't understand what you find so amusing though. Maybe, You should be the first to submit information regarding Black comedians?

Sure, there were economic conditions between the north and the south that helped spur the war. There was also the fight between the slave and non slave proponets. And states rights versus federal rights. The abolition movement increased steam. The election of Abe Lincoln also caused problems. To say just one of these things caused all the problems is not accurate.

"STRAIGHT BLACK…..NO CREAM"
(Confessions Of A Coffee Fiend)
by
R. L. Hilliard
Coffee sir? Yes, please……………..
Don't bring me no damn cream….it's straight black coffee for me!
You see I've sampled brews from all over the world, but the one I chose is just like my girl….Straight black….no cream, hot and sassy, rich bold flavor and always classy!
I savor the flavor of my coffee…. as she touches my lips……..
yeah, I go downtown for my coffee….I've made a many a trips.
I long for the kiss of my mahogany Miss.
I fien for the bean, if you know what you I mean……
My coffees always sweet and never tastes bitter……..
she's freshly brewed, whenever I hit her!
I like my coffee straight black….wit no taste cream.
I rise in the morning for my coffee and have another sip right before I dream.
If you had to label me….label me…a straight up coffee fiend!
I like to drink my coffee right out the pot….
I like her when she's piping hot……
Damn, it feels good, when my coffee…hits the spot!
She keeps me up all night….coffee makes me feel just right.
Folks say too much caffeine ain't good for you….
But what's a fiend like me to do? I took one taste and I was through.
My coffees Taster's Choice and she's "good down to the last drop."
I got's to have my coffee…..man I just cain't stop!
Now I ain't sayin' I'm an authority or tryin' to be no coffee connoisseur….
but I do like my coffee….untainted…straight black…au natural' and pure.
When she goes down….my coffee heats me all over and satisfies me..… through and through. Sometimes I just hold my coffee….looking into her…inhaling her aroma….admiring the flawlessness of her ebony hue.
I bet if you knew coffee, like I….knew coffee……brother man……
You'd….fien' for coffee too!

Excuse me sir! Slavery had nothing to do with the War Of Northern Aggression. The South was NOT fighting to preserve slavery! Before that war got started three of the Southern States were working on getting rid of it! There was way much more slave trade going on in the Northern States than there was in the Southern States. The War of Northern Aggression was about states rights and the tyrannical government of the Northern States under "Not So Honest" Abe Lincoln.
May I suggest you read "THE SOUTH WAS RIGHT" by James R. Kennedy and Walter D. Kennedy.

Point well taken. I started 2 Threads that disappeared asking for tolerance, understanding and appreciation for one another after returning home and checking on the progress of the thread at the end of the day I discovered the threads were deleted. There are steps that should be followed and one thing that I have observed here is some people want to pretend that things are fine or if we don't talk about it or see it then things are fine. But,things are not fine for everyone everywhere and this Black History Thread amplifies and underscores history. We have not depicted oppression or varying degrees of inequality so people who claim we are trying to shove something in their faces are not dealing with something that bothers them about people who are different from them. Maybe they can't tolerate seeing commercials for "Feed The Children" either. I am not hurting anyone. I am not suggesting superior behavior. I have created something that people have enjoyed participating in that have not felt stressed or under attack here. A few bad apples haven't spoiled the bunch here. Did you recall reading about the man who never learned about Black History. I can share a brief story about the little girl who had never saw a black person before and she looked at me wide eyed and preceeded to try to wipe color from my skin with her hand. She checked her hand to see if my color came off in her hand. It is our responsibility to enter these threads with our minds open. We also need to show individuals that enter threads and regardless to the topic find a way to find a disparaging article about a black person and post it. When all races say that they won't tolerate it and say to the guy that it isnt appropriate then this is when I know that we are making bigger steps in the right direction. It offends me when folks say that I am racist and they go out of their way to try to "break me down" hoping I will give up and leave which some have done. They call you racist and block you so it appears that your silence is your guilt. I would like to see this Black History thread through and continue to feel good about people who have participated because they want to be involved with sharing and showing ways that we care which shows me that as big as this site is and as little opposition that this thread has received then I know we are closer to being "One" one day.

There's another horribly wrong story that came out of the War Of Northern Aggression. That's the story about how Blacks were "forced" to fight for the South. That's just a bunch of Northern Bull!
The story goes that the South was running low on manpower and so they "forced" Blacks to go into the Confederate Army and fight.
WRONG!
All the Blacks that joined the Confederate Army were ALL volunteers. Now....you don't suppose THEY were fighting to preserve slavery do you? You don't suppose they were fighting to remain slaves do you?
Wake up people! You have only read the Northern side of that war. Read the Southern side and see what that was was really all about. And It dang sure wasn't about slavery!

What happened to my message about the "inventor of the internet?"
It appears that some whites have grouped together and are clicking "inappropriate" on ANY message I post.
The post you are trying to find:
Phillip Emeagwali...the unsung African inventor of the internet.
http://emeagwali.com/
Your problem is you've got the wrong thread, you ignorant dolt!
Your inaccurate post was posted at 1/27/2009 6:18:10 AM on "American History: Old Black America" not
"American History in Pictures: Old Black America." Are you able to comprehend the difference?
And if you would have bothered to read the article CNNfyi.com, you would have seen that not much was mentioned about the Internet.
While we're at it, CNNfyi.com is a very poor source of information, because it boils things down to highlights. Use Wikipedia. They back up their information with facts and other sources to read.
My response to your post:
The Internet was invented by Al Gore... er, no, I mean the Internet was developed by Davies of the National Physics Lab, Baran of Rand Corporation and Kleinrock of MIT in the late sixties. At that time Emeagwali was in the Biafran army.
For his work in linking PC's to achieve parallel processing and achieving huge computing power, CNNfyi dubbed him "a father of the Internet'" but at that time (1989) all the concepts and protocols for the Internet had been worked out.
He did, however, receive many awards and prizes and was named the greatest African scientist of all time.
Why not honor him for what he actually did?
Why not say something about George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington, too?
I actually met General Benjamin O. Davis when he made a visit and gave a speech at the base I was stationed at in Thailand. It was just a reception line as in "Nice to meet you, general," "Nice to meet you, lieutenant." I'm sure he doesn't remember it, but I do. He was a real gentleman and a fine commander.

A 1967 drama starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katherine Hepburn and Katherine Houghton. Groundbreaking story deals with the controversial subject of interracial marriage. I guess I never considered the fact that interracial marriage was once illegal.

Mr. Poitier starred in the movie In The Heat Of The Night The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor that later became a television series. But Sidney Poitier as a no-nonsense black detective took the racist Mississippi Police Department by surprise. In the television series Howard Rollins
played the role as the detective Virgil Tibbs and Carroll O'Connor played Police Chief Bill Gillespie.
Carroll O'Connor's character Archie Bunker was such a bigot in All In The Family . But,he ended up doing what was right in spite of himself. The show changed the way that America viewed black and white family relationships and friendships.
Maude and The Jeffersons were spin off from the show. These two were very funny sitcoms.

You’re surprised that your “black man if Africa invented the internet” post is gone, and somehow it’s a conspiracy? Most of your posts are preposterous, so nothing you have to offer is significant enough to warrant the effort necessitated by any of us for flagging them as inappropriate. The merit of individual posts, or lack of thereof, is what mitigates the longevity of any post.

In short SCW: Maybe the DH monitors are just sick of your racist shit. JMHO.

Okay, I'm a movie buff, I admit it! And there's been a little said about MORGAN FREEMAN...but I love his acting...and this is one of his best moments.----
And I have to add this---

Not a good idea to separate people into black and white.
It is not that easy.

areal, "amid all the hate" which many of us have seen voiced by those---at times---who in gangs or individually go on a "wilding" in here (if you know the term)....
just want you to know that one of our top 3 and one of our earliest still-active politics posters (no names, but a big hint there) attempted a thread (last september, maybe) which in its title challenged DH forums posters to say something positive about a minority person or achievement.
it was hijacked, butchered and flagged by many caucasian posters (not me) who were incensed at this young woman's thread idea.
of course, the gang on a "wilding" won, and the thread was deleted.
she attempted a new thread a few days later---same topic---- and did at least receive some number of respectful posts.
my point is: look how far we've come, in DH politics!
just 4-5 months later, we have not one but two threads current of this nature, with much respectful and constructive posting content.
props to you for your skilled and authoratative thread management and to all good people who contributed.

Omega: Thank you for that video. You always find great material. And that poetry very nice too. In regard to the video: Unfortunately, this sort of injustice separation of families occurred more times then we could ever imagine. When you consider the impact of identities being lost and then reassigned one it's just hard to put the feeling into words. The Emancipation Proclamation makes your soul dance inside. I thought about humble people and their right to celebrate in any way they feel necessary. You can never tell anyone when it's time for them to feel just, equal, pain free.
Layla: Thank you. I know I was suppose to pick up on that hint but I didnt but I get the point though. I have only been here about 2 and one half months. I'm trying to get to know who people are and their agenda.

As I stated previously, Black History Month recognition is a way to highlight some of the important work sacrifices movements struggles, commitments that Black people of yesterday and today are continuing to do for the betterment of man kind. There are people who have absolutely no knowledge of Black History or Black people in general. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Hussein Obama had dreams and some of those dreams have come to be made; possible by people who see things with open minds and bigger hearts. I’m going to continue with this observance and I hope that it proves to be a learning experience to all of us as we all grow to be more tolerant of one another.
In 1926 African American scholar Carter Godwin Woodson organized the first Negro History week, to focus attention on previously neglected aspects of the black experience in the United States. Woodson chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, as well as the anniversary of the founding of the NAACP. The observance/celebration was extended to become Black History Month in 1976. During February, lectures, exhibitions, banquets, cultural events, and television and radio programming celebrate the achievements of African Americans. Since 1978 the U.S. Postal Service has participated in Black History Month by issuing commemorative stamps honoring notable African Americans.
