I had an ex husband (whom I had known since I was in the 8th grade_) tell me:::
I cannot love you as a wife
I love you as a sister.
This could be what happens when the infatuation is gone after 5 or so years and Reality sets in...We are unable to Cope, Hope or hardly live...
Just a thought from an Old Lady.....

We have stopped communicating effectively regarding such, but I also believe some people flat out either don't want to cope with the emotional "drag through" of breaking up, or guilt aswell. I was once stayed in a relationship for several months due to not wanting to hurt the woman I was involved with. Lack of communication on my part-yes, however there are guilt and emotions involved even with honesty.

I feel telling a person the relationship is over is better then cheating on the person.

cause they dont want to hear the reaction. crying or anger or that hurt look. or why why why, we can fix this. (and the dumper doesnt want to 'fix' anything). the person just wants to escape and not deal with it.
most people know that the right thing to do is to be upfront and tell them.
but the reality is that alot of people would rather take the easy way out and disappear.
sometimes they will send an email or leave voicemail message. then they dont have to hear a reaction and they feel they did their break up communication.
