How someone could be with a 20 year old, or even 70 year old, amazes me. Now your dealing with inmaturity or issues of an elderly person. 39 is still young, but as long as your are happy and they are mature, then its ok with me. I tried dating a 49 year old thinking it would be better because he was older and mature. Yah right, he left me (just the day before saying he hasn't been this happy in forever), then married his ex again. I heard he is miserable. LOL. OH WELL what comes around goes around. There is, in principle I think, no difference: A younger partner makes you look, feel and act younger - at least for a while! The older partner seems to be defeating ageing. How great is that? It's just that traditionally to have a younger partner was acceptable for men but not really for women. Now this is changing as women become ever more selfdirected and independent. And some older men might not like the competition by younger men. Women think: So what! Needs change with age. If the age gap is very big, say more than 15 years, the differences of the personal needs of the partners become, in general, more pronounced and therefore an increasing stress for the relationship. What 40 year old man wants to go to a party with his 55 year old women when other men his age show up with ladies in their 20's? What 55 year old woman wants to become the nurse of her ailing 70 old husband? Of course, there are people who have no difficulties with that - but they seem to me rare specimens. If the relationship is planned to be temporary only - silently or openly as when "dating" perhaps - than such a relationship might work temporarely as per definition. However, as time goes on, the 55 year old woman that was left by her 40 year old man will most likely face now a rather rarified supply of desirable new partners. Equally, a 60 year old man left by his 45 year old partner might not have many good choices left either. There is one exception: If the male is old but VERY powerful and rich a young woman will perhaps be enticed to become his companion. See Jacky Kennedy and Onnassis, or King David and his 17 year old girlfriend he had when he was in his 70's. Love? Don't believe it! PS: I have been married for 40 years to my wife who is 3 years my junior, and I still am. However, I also have had long-term affairs with women 10 to 20 years younger than me. Tell you the truth: There were exhilarating and excruciating times in both types of partnerships. The age gap was occasionally the reason for both. In the end, my life has been incredibly enriched by both. I am so grateful to all those women. Crucify me if you wish...
