The All-Too-Brief History of the Sexy Losers by John Schmidt

Sexy Losers was an adult only online web comic created by a man named Clay. Clay lived on the East Coast before moving to Waterloo, Ontario, where he studied psychology. He continued his studies, published his thesis, and wasn’t able to find a job. In 1999 he moved to Japan on the JET program and after leaving, began teaching private school. In his spare time he worked on the web comic Sexy Losers.

Clay found that living in Japan was an unusual experience, in part because he felt that he was looked down upon by his race. He had problems learning Japanese, but decided to stay because he loved the area and the people, and because he found the whole thing a type of learning experience. His stay in Japan influenced his artwork and the creation of Sexy Losers, which he wanted to be a little more sophisticated and adult than what was previously done by artists from North America.

Sexy Losers premiered on the Keenspace website, but Clay eventually moved the comic to its own domain name. At the height of its popularity, Sexy Losers was getting over 500,000 visits a month. The web hosting company even announced in 2003 that the site had over one million visitors in a single month.

When Sexy Losers first premiered, Clay was known as Hard, a pseudonym he would keep for several years. The focus of the comic was on adult themes such as depictions of sexual acts and characters with less than reputable occupations and behaviors. When the comic moved to its own website, the artists listed a disclaimer on the front to warn visitors of the graphic drawings and language.

Sexy Losers first began in 1999, but was known as The Thin H Live. Clay’s move to Japan along with problems in his personal life led to the comic getting a new name in 2001. He also changed his name to Hard, but later returned to Clay in 2004. The end of the comic came in 2006. Clay announced on his Live Journal page that he was discontinuing the strip due in part to a lack of time. He posted new strips in 2007 and 2008, but never returned full-time. The Sexy Losers website itself was later shut down.
