 We now live longer, our standard of health is generally a lot better than it was 30-40 years ago, health and fitness seem to be at the top of everyones agenda, health food stores and gymnasiums do a bustling trade, general life expectancy has risen and in many ways people today act younger than their parents did at the same age.

Scientists have now defined a new age concept and believe it could explain why populations are ageing, but at the same time seem to be getting younger. According to recent European research the average German was 39.9 years old in 2000 and could plan to live for another 39.2 years i.e. until around 80.

However, by 2050 the average German will be 51.9 years old and will be expected to live another 37.1 years. So middle age in 2050 would occur at around 52 years instead of 40 years, and the average citizen could expect to live until 87. These findings can be easily transferred and applied to American, British and indeed most other national Western populations. The message being; that no matter how you look at it; we are now living longer.

If our general life expectancy is increasing year on year and we look after ourselves properly; should age defined forums such as this one not be re-evaluated and/or be made redundant?

On a more personal note; do you feel that 40 is now the new 30?
