I check on my daugther then I turn the spot lights on. No one is there. I go get my shot gun and I go outside shoot it and scream "whoever is out there I am not afraid to use this." I did not have a gun, but I almost beat him to death, he covered his head and ran. It pissed me off that he would even try something like that.. He may have had the wrong condominium. sommfshmn Somerville, AL 53, joined Nov. 2007	Have somene take a couple of shells down and take out 1/3 of the powder and replace the pellets with some fine pellets of rock salt,that way if you do have to shoot someone it won`t kill them but they will wish they were dead cause when that salt penetrates into the skin it will burn like the d*ckens.They WILL learn their lesson.

alex5872 Collierville, TN 58, joined Dec. 2008	i have a 12 ga, 16in barrell, pistol grip, no plug, pump shot gun.....yes it fit under a rain coat...at 4 am i open the door leave the chain on and stick it out the crack.......like hot said if they know me they will call or come back later.......you can buy some different (Rock Salt) 12 ga shells at most gun shows..... at 4 am in might miss with a hand gun

Around 11:00pm, as my mom and I were watching tv, we heard someone knocking on the outside basement door. It wasn't our imagination because my dog started barking and ran to the door to the stairs. I was sure it was one of my kids so I went downstairs (with the barking dog) to let him/her in. My mom was yelling for me not to open the door. I couldn't open the door fast enough for the dog to get out to get the person at the door but there was no one there. My dog ran around to the back of the house. I slammed the basement door and locked it back and went upstairs. I was terrified. I called the police and while on the phone with them, I let my dog in through the front door. It was probably 15 minutes before the cops arrived and, of course, no trace of anyone. When my husband came home, I told him what had happened and that he needed to start leaving one of his guns for me. He just said, "Ain't nobody gonna bother you here". No wonder we aren't together anymore.

We have an alarm system, so if someone actually tried to break in, the cops would, hopefully, get there before any damage could be done. Although I do keep a golf club handy. And I've been working out so I think I might be the one doing the damage. But, we've got an alarm with the sign right next to the front door and there are 4 locks on my door. With the crazy ex's that my sis and I have we have to be careful.

All the kids know not to ever sneak up on or scare me when I'm asleep or alone at night because I keep a loaded pistol handy.

Just not 4 in the morning. lol. I did not open the door right away. I checked the kids, turned the spot lights on. Let the dog outside before going out with the gun. I know that if someone was going to break it they would not ring the door bell, but they still will be looking down the barrel of a shot gun. lol Thanks for everyones own experiences. Very enlightening and helpful.

Our police department was closed and 911 kept transferring me to their ANSWERING MACHINE!!! I had a can of Oven cleaner to fill their face with. I was told you can't harm them. Yeah, right! Find out if you live in a small town if your police department is open 24/7. If not ask what do you do next?

If I feel that where I reside and we are in danger then I have the right to protect myself. There is no reason for a sane human being in my yard or ringing my door bell at that time of morning and me half asleep. I am not a gun happy person but I will use it if I feel my family in danger. Thanks for your input though. I appreciate it.

Seriously, though, this can be an issue, my 86 year old next door neighbor had this happen to her last night. I told her next time call the police right away, then call me, I'll help my neighbors.....

Even the majority of professional law enforcement officers would tell you that they don't want to have to shoot someone. Although it's true that you have a right to protect yourself if your life, or the life of your loved ones is in danger, it's also true that there is a crime called "excessive use of force". Once the OP stepped out of her door she became an aggressor with "intent to do bodily harm". The OP could have gone to jail for what she did, and then who would have protected her daughter? What if that had been the police, or some other emergency personnel, who had been called out to the area but realized before you made it to the door that they were at the wrong address? One thing this world does not need is for more children to be taught that violence, and guns, are the only way to handle a situation.
