Hi everyone.

I'm seriously thinking of moving (after I sell my farm) to KY and was wondering if you all could tell me what is so great and not so great about Kentucky?...maybe which part of the state is the best.

Before my divorce a few years back I was a very successful small time market breeder of thoroughbred race horses and because of my divorce and how bad the economy is here in Ca and the race horse industry here is dissolving rather quickly...I was thinking of using my skills elsewhere and what better place then the beautiful state of Kentucky?

I also have conservative values and have heard people are more friendlier in KY then self centered Ca...is that true?

I always feel like I was born in either the wrong time or place lol

If you want to stay in the horse industry, Louisville and Lexington would be your best choices. Just be ready to deal with the ignorant rednescks, there are a lot of them here. Louisville is a better choice than Lexington. We have Churchill Downs here and it doesn't get anymore historic than that.

Thanks so far

Oh yes I forgot to mention the weather that seems to be pretty important to me as I am NOT a cold weather person...once in a while is fine like here in Ca (although I hate this time of year as well) so not a lot of rain and snow would be nice.

how about churches>...I am a born again christian

Greatcatch, Any where in Ky. Is beautiful,You have the mountains of eastern Ky. The foot hills in south east Ky.And the western region, is flat to rolling hills.
I'd say if you want to get into breeding thoroubreds,Central Ky. has the bigest horse farms ,Calumet,Lanes End,And others,Countys you should look at are Fayette,Woodford Clark, & Scot. The Cities are Lexington,Versailes Winchester, Georgetown,They are all beautiful places,With some of the most beatiuful farms around,And realy nice people.

Keeneland Race Course Is one of the most beautiful tracks in the country,Louisville is also nice. I guess i'm partial to Keeneland because I retired from there,Also have two brothers retireing from there. You can contact ball homes,The owner also deals with horses.
If I can be of any more help contact me here,Email me any questions you have and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

OH I know a lot about race horse history thanks. I also know of all the farms as well as I have many Thoroughbred directories nationwide. I guess when I am ready to actually move I will try and see who needs help. I'm too old to be at the track and do not want to be. I would prefer a management job on a farm that includes housing and benefits. I would rather usemy brains than brawn at this stage of my life and I proved I actually still have some left lol

It would be nice to just start chatting with folks on here and get to know some and when the time is right I can come out and visit and see if I like it. I receive alimony and breeders awards, so I'm not desperate at getting a job right now.

I look forward to getting to know some of you

yeah a friend of mine who was breeding horses as well, (sad to say they are done as well) says she feels like KY is her home like she was suppose to be born there. She has visited many farms and says they are so nice you could actually live in the barns lol

If you like the CA warmth, you don't want to come here from December to March. If you can handle the cold and since you like horses, then I would try to live near Lexington, KY as there are more horse farms there.

I have made friends with a great family that moved here from the Emerald Triangle 3 years ago and they really love it here. They are quintessential "old hippies" (hyper-organic, feed-the-family-off-the-land types) and have dug in "like a tick" as is said around here. They tell frightening tales of their previous lives in that war zone and relish every moment of life on their farm here. They bought a farm of 26 acres, free and clear with their equity from Cali and have a beautiful family that is admirable by most.
Kentucky is an easy-going place and although I would advise against eastern KY, we pretty much have the freedom to do what we want here and land is cheap enough to buy your privacy and do whatever turns you on. I have and we do Taxes are crazy cheap, cost of living is quite low and employment is what you make of it.
Horses, even good ones, are so cheap, you'll fill your barn and life with several almost immediately, I turn down FREE retired thoroughbred geldings often. Every breed and type is available cheap and the horse traders will skin you blind after word gets out if you let them LOL. Shop around here and you'll get great horses for 200$ or less.
Go to feed mills and the farm stores and dawdle, meet some people, talk with farmers, extension agents and the chamber of commerce. Go to the Richmond horse sale and mingle a little before you buy land and a home. Go to the Tuesday sale at London and see the underbelly of the horse market. You'll find friends everywhere almost immediately. Spend money VERY sparingly and the real deals will come to you.
If you feel like you were born late, relocate to where time moves a little slower.
Welcome!

Catch. I have been here 3 months. Just take the leap is all I can say. I lived all over the US including Orange county CA for a year. I came thru KY headed who knows where (think NM) in an RV and am moving to my own farm in a week or so, right here. I'm here to stay. Can't compare other places to here. People, pace of life is so different. Nice people. You'll find KY wants it's residents to be happy. I could go on and on about that having lived in states both east and west coast and the middle.

Things will blow you away compared to CA, You'll never even want to go back for a visit. Lex is horse ville, if your into the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and names and fame or horsearama,, Billion dollar farms, stables nicer than most houses. But there are horses, cattle and farm people everywhere. 22 horses on the farm I am temporarily staying on now. 3 gorgeous great bloodline stallions. Don't think rednecks, ignorant, deliverance, shine, that's bull. People are people, some are a bit different is all, same everywhere. Keep a good attitude and you'll love all the people here. Will Rogers said "No man is such a fool as nothing can be learned from him"

Need a stop off look around spot, I have a couple extra rooms. Place so big I will be lost myself. Ok to message me too, I'm not a perv on the prowl. Oh ok maybe a perv Again, don't focus on Lex and Louis unless you NEED the city, you'll find the country and country folk very nice indeed. Shawn

Well that seems the same where I live here. I live in Nortern Ca and it snows here too. Doesn't stay as much like Tahoe or reno...but it comes and goes, so not too much of a strech.

Wash and Ore would be too rainy and depressing, Minn (I have a freind there)and the like too cold. Ky sounds nice and is very beautiful with beautiful old housing and rolling hills.

How about price of living?

Time and people move slower LOL...that was the most frustrating thing for me to adjust to after life in a big city..nobody moves quickly here, well except the men but that's for a different thread! LOL. Very laid back life in KY. They truly live the saying, Don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff!

OH I meant more in attitude than slow paced. lol

I tend to be the type that will talk to anyone in line...I always say "no such thing as a stranger to me they are potenial friends" I am very social and get my energy from being around people, and activites, not alone. I believe in having good morals and ethics, treat others as you would have them treat you...I tend to be too honest, trusting and friendly for most Californians even though I was born and raised here.

I'm not slow though and that may be a bit annoying.

I have lived in my earlier years...upstate NY (horses) for a year, Fl (was ok then) for a year...Texas for a few months (hate Texas) and traveled to different states.

So what are some negatives...haven't read all the posts yet, be honest I can handle it

PS can't "leap" till I sell my farm....it goes on the market in Feb

I've lived in KY for about three years. It does seem to be a bit slower paced, and most of the people are bit friendlier. However, I have never seen so many people who tailgate, and I have never seen so many car accidents, until I moved here. I also have a big problem with the level of incompetence in the schools and medical field. Maybe this is just a problem in the area where I live.

greatcatch, welcome in advance of your journey. KY will let anyone in but don't try to leave after you get here. I live in the Baptist Belt, SouthCentral KY, they roll up the street and sidewalks after 10pm through the week.

Have an idea for you though, Mammoth Cave in near me, I know there are some of the best trail rides in KY right there on the Park. You will be surprised how many Bed & Breakfast with barns for the horses. People can not park a horse in a carrier at the hotels. Really is a seasonal thing, but when horse riders find you, they will return in all kinds of weather to use your stables. Just another side of the horse thingee, you do not have to be into breeder or race track to enjoy horses in KY. Amish in our area break a lot of the trail riding horses.

Religion, we have all beliefs in KY. I live in Bowling Green, Warren County. We have an International Center that accepts refugees from UN Camps around the world. We have more immigrants per capita than NYC. We have many, do mean many, ethnic restaurants that sprang up, Bosnian, Greek, Mexican, Italian, Thai, really can not name them all.

The first thing you will notice is...unlike CA traffic jams on the expressways...I can drive 123 miles to Louisville on I65 in 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hrs. Our expressway speed limit is 75MPH but if you don't want to get run over you will keep up with the traffic doing 80MPH.

KY and VA/WVA are about the same for green rolling hills, lots of trees and grass. I have seen CA's golden hills...disappointed, all I could see was dried sage brush. So be prepared for blue skys and green grass.

Humidity, we have that also. The Hispanics who followed storm chasers first came here in 1998, after our great hail storm. They worked about 3 mo, then went farther North because KY was hotter than Mexico. Hard to believe, but just they thought so.

You can google R/E websites and see properties, some have web video previews of property.

KY has more state parks than any other state. So if you want to be located near water, KY can do that for you. About late 50's and early 60's Corps of Engineers built many lakes. Have heard there is a lake within 40 miles of anywhere you might choose to live.

I have traveled KY from Paducah to Hazard for my business. Some act like Eastern KY is not a desireable place to live. Listen to me, some of the most beautiful sites are in Eastern KY, and the people will warm up to you if you are warm and open to them.

Go to websites like KY Tourism, find the areas that interest you. So, just fly into KY and roam around till you find your feet planted somewhere.

Whew! Glad I'm not a Kentuckian! I was born in GA, raised in AL and moved to KY! Never left! Love it!
