1. Yes it is a sport |
2. No, it's not a sport |
3. It might be entertainment, but not a sport |
4. It's neither |
5. I could care less |
6. It's both Sport & Entertainment |
I'm probably opening up (another) can o' worms, but I was curious as to a general consensus about this. I, for one, simply don't see how anyone could classify car-racing (NASCAR, etc.) as a "sport' (I don't even think it's entertaining...a bunch of people driving cars real fast 'round n' 'round with a bunch of left-hand turns - whooppee!). (To me it falls into the same category as "pro' wresting (WWE, etc.) - stupid stuff!
Ok, now let me have it, you NASCAR fans...

Cricket, I have a son that loves it, drives it, builds the cars, custom designs for exhaust systems, custom accessories, won the Ultimate Street Car Challenge, first place in 2004, never entered again, as he knew he could build the car and win. I would post a picture of his car if I knew how. I would say yes it is a sport for him, although he makes a not too shabby living from his custom designes, so it is also a hobby and a business.
Not that he has that car any longer, sold it just after the win and made big bucks on it.

Well, I watch the occasional NASCAR race on TV, been to Charlotte, pretty cool track, and I know which driver is with which sponsor, but for me, NFL football is #1!
PS - never claimed to be a "normal" sports-hating woman either

Feel for ya Cricket, some folks take NASCAR VERY seriously.....an American institution second only to baseball.....now pro wrestling, I agree with you there, not much of a sport, but then I don't watch much TV either?

I only went to one race - down in Marietta, GA - at a red-clay dirt track. They kicked up huge clouds of thick, red dust - and, you couldn't see any of the cars!!! It was all this horrendous noise and dust - and, I think of that whenever I start to watch a race - and, well... I know it takes a lot of skill, and fortitude and a "devil-may-care" attitude and a helluva lot of luck sometimes - to merely survive - but, not really something that "floats my boat" (Fuels my Fiat???)

Tn_Tx - Yes, I'm sure it's a business and fun for those who do it (build it, race it, etc. - heck what guy (or lady) doesn't like to drive fast now 'n then)...and certainly could be classified as a "hobby'... I guess my question is more towards the viewer, the "fan'... thanks for the response..

Yeh, Anne, I know...That's why I asked - simply can't understand WHY they take it so seriously... I agree with ya about NFL, too...can't wait for season to start (although I'll just get heartache again with my team - 'Skins')..
Thanks

That's okay George, I take lots of abuse for my teams... Dolphins and Broncos
PS - and then I had to go fall in love with a Cowboys fan, what was I thinking?

To me, watching NASCAR is like watching paint dry... Went to the INDY 500 years ago, and aside from the party atmosphere, the race itself was boring... The only interesting part of a race is watching the pit crews do their thing.....

So cricket, erase my answer. I am a fan of my son, long as he likes what he is doing. Not a real fan of NASCAR as such, but do enjoy going to the races, not always for the races, but fun to watch the team work and the events before and after the races.

Gotcha, Tn_Tx - and, dare I say, maybe that is where my point-of-view is somewhat slanted because I have never been to any kind of race (well, one horse-race once), so maybe - jus' maybe - if I went to one I would have a different view about it. The problem is that I don't enjoy it all all on TV, which makes my desiring to attend it live pretty much non-existent. Still...you've brought up a good point - I'm sure the pit crews, etc., are fun to watch, too...
Thanks..
