Reading Tarot Cards by Sue Jones

The history of tarot cards date back to the 14th century when the first deck of cards was created in Italy. Historians found evidence that shows Italians were using the tarot for divination purposes as early as 1735 and by the end of the 18th century they were quite popular in parts of Europe. The early decks often featured images of Greek gods and had only 27 cards total. Later versions featured a queen, king, pafe and knight as well as the common suits used today: swords, cups, coins and batons or wands. It was also common for the designs on these cards to be painted by hand.

A French woman began using the cards as a form of divination during Napoleon’s time. Her work was so popular that his wife Josephine even had her cards read. Another French woman by the name of De Gebelin claimed that the gypsies used the cards long before anyone else and brought them to Europe. By the start of the 20th century, mediums in the United States were using the cards. The Hermitage gives a long history of the tarot decks.

The typical reading using tarot cards involves an individual focusing their energy and thoughts on a specific question. Experts recommend that someone else always do your reading. Never do your reading for yourself, but ask someone else to do it. The question must be involved and should never have a simple yes or no answer. Someone asking about their partner shouldn’t ask if things will work out, but rather what the future holds for their relationship. How Tarot Cards Work offer different types of questions to ask.

The question asker shuffles the deck several times while concentrating on their specific question. The reader then lays the cards in a specific manner also known as a spread. The Celtic Spread, Zodiac, Love and Five Card Spread are popular choices. The way the cards appear in the layout also hold different meanings. For example the Five of Cups has a different meaning when it’s shown upside down than when it faces upright. Most believe that when a card falls upside down, the meaning of the card itself is reversed. Tarot Spreads and Tarot Card Spreads show different types of spreads.

The standard tarot card deck contains 78 cards. The Minor Arcana contains four suits and each suit has the swords, cups, wands and coins with numbered cards. They also have a jack, knight, king and queen. The standard deck also contains the Fool and other specific cards with different meanings, which are known as the Major Arcana. The Death card is one example. The Major Arcana shows the different cards found on the Major Arcana, while Cards of the Minor Arcana focuses on the cards in that deck.

Tarot cards have both negative and positive connotations. The positive ideas came about during the Age of Enlightenment and the rise in spirituality during the late 19th century. People paid money to mediums and believed explicitly in what those people said. Those with an open mind are more likely to believe in the readings and those giving them.

On the other side are the negative thoughts associated with the tarot cards. The movies helped spread this idea by showing a poor girl asking for a reading and seeing the Death card instantly. There are also some who claim the tarot cards are the work of the devil and take a spiritual stance against them. The negative thoughts were also helped by the large number of fake mediums and spiritual advisors who hid behind the cards or gave a reading without any experience or knowledge of the deck.

One of the most common cards or most recognizable ones is the Death card, which actually means hope or a new beginning rather than the scary idea associated with it. The Fool card represents a journey and a change, but also the possibility of failing at something. The Ace of Cups has a meaning that depends on an awakening or new birth, especially in cases of love. The Eight of Swords card on the other hand means that the person feels unable to leave a bad situation. Basic Tarot Card Meanings gives meanings for each of the 78 cards.

There are a number of different tarot card decks available, but most contain the same elements in their imagery. Looking at the images often helps an individual determine the meaning. The King of Coins or Pentacles for example represents someone with power, and the figure on the card sits in a large throne surrounded by money. Many of the other cards also show images relating to their meaning.

Tarot cards are still highly popular and widely used today. Singles especially are interested in asking the cards for advice and seeing what the future holds. There are people working in the field as professional mediums or readers, but there are also stores that sell books about the cards and the decks. It lets anyone learn more and try their own reading.
