Psychiatry is a field of medicine that deals with the treatment and study of mental disorders. Psychiatry resembles psychology in that both fields research and treat people with the same disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. However, psychiatry is the medical treatment of the psyche while psychology deals with the science and theory of the psyche. Some other common psychiatric disorders include dissociative disorders, anxiety disorders, drug abuse, eating disorders, split personality disorder, and bipolar disorder to name a few. Psychiatric disorders can be socially debilitating. Depending on the severity of the mental illness, a person may be able to function as a healthy member of society.
