I've been wanting to get into the import scene for sometime now. And now I have a decent job that I can do from home, I'm wanting to get a car and trick it out.
I don't really care about racing at the tracks or street racing lol. I just want something for looks and sound. And am definitely wanting to throw some lambo doors on it.
What are some nice models that aren't going to cost an arm and a leg? I kind of like the RX 8 but I hear the engines go out on them every 100k miles or so. I'm not big on the 350 or 370 Z and I don't want a civic cause everyone and their sister has one of them. Maybe a nice beemer or something?
Ideas?

You're about a decade late, bud. The import scene is all but dead except for a few surviving cars. And nobody does body kits, lambo doors or fart cans anymore. Its all about factory sleeper performance.

Unfortunately its true. Decking a car out to that degree was a fad. 400 pounds of bullshit bolted on to the car. And a muffler swapped on a tail pipe.
If you are serious. A m3 bmw or a mk6 gti if euro is your thing. Rice wise? You will be limited if you want to be unique. If anything id go insanely old school. 74 fairlady Z. One of the easiest and most beloved cars to mod. Can drop just about any motor into it.

Unless you like getting laughed at everywhere you go don't get lambo doors, body kit, neons, and retarded decals. Just go for a clean look like VIP or maybe flush. Something thats easy to find parts would be a g35 or 350z, some Lexus, some BMW's etc. Do some research and get what you like.

You just havent used your "muscle" car properly. No substitute for cubic inches or cubic dollars. . Lol. I'm pretty sure my +500hp featherweight 4 cylinder car could manhandle plenty of muscle cars. And that's far from my fastest car. There is a plausible substitute for displacement... It's called boost...

I just cant appreciate you tuner guys dumping $ after $ into something in the end smokes and is worth $1000 because lets be honest nobody give a rats a** about a Subaru. I can strip all the aftermarket stuff and all the fabrication that I have done to the car turn it back to stock and get 35K to 40K for it.

First of all, "old dude" is far from the worst thing that I can call you. Secondly, I said that my car could manhandle "quite a few muscle cars" not particularly your muscle car. Only a fool challenges someone blindly. Three... What you just said explains why kids buy tuners. They are cheap to mod, have a large aftermarket, and a cheap initial purchase price. The prices of muscle cars have skyrocketed in.recent years, not to mention gas prices... I bought my car (not even an import, its a ford) for 500 bucks in running condition, dropped 3500 into her over a few years and now have a fast, fun daily driver that I can bump down the boost and get 30mpg and run pump gas. Now... I'm not knocking muscle cars... I'm just saying that imports have their place and they do deserve respect.

I would like to know how else you challenge somebody on the street but blindly when you pull up next to them. Do you have X-Ray vision cause I dont Im just ready to go no excuses. If you have X-Ray glasses just a suggestion you should patent them. You could make a fortune and get out of the trailer park.
Let me tell your way off. If Im the "Old Dude" let me tell ya something sonny boy. I worked at a Import dealership I have seen your kind come and (hopefully) go. You youngsters just dont buy them because cheap to modify you buy em cause your a plug and play generation. At your age your interested in Tatts, Gauges, and being a legend in your own mind. Their was one guy that had the right idea he was 22 and he would order these master cylinders by the dozen and went to a machine shop and had these adapters made for em. Geniuous-no. Good business sense-yes. He would even say most of the people he sells to cant pay their bills but will go into hock for a 5" fart pipe. Your right Imports do have thier place and thats crushed and recycled. Deserve respect Sorry NO.They have to earn respect.

. You, sir, know nothing about me and apparently nothing about.automobiles. plug and play? The one car I mentioned is a 1985. Try tuning that without an aftermarket ecm. Just because a car isn't a "muscle car," doesn't make it any less of respectable performance automobile. Stock for stock, a 2010 cobalt ss will hand a 1968 camaro ss its a** in both the quarter mile and the autocross track on stock street tires... While getting 30+ mpg. I am far more versed in fabrication and automotive performance than you think I am, and if need be, I have people on this forum that can vouche for that. The facts are simple... Get with the times, or die...

The bashing between the two types of vehicles is getting to be as old as time now. Tuners are just that. And the age of the original poster kind of points to the fact he CAN'T just drop the cash for a 68. So the comparison of a SOUGHT AFTER car to what is available on the free market within a select budget range is kind of moot. Wouldn't you agree? So rather than you be called old, and calling the younger guys (im in between so I can't really fit with your descriptions obviously) tatted up punks, just let the subject go. Obviously the guy wanted something european or rice. That's his choice. You like american muscle, I just like all cars. But the logic you use doesn't work for the newer generations. By your guidelines, I have a far better car in my 66 GT350, than I do in my 98 Supercharged Cobra. Simply because of it's value and displacement (8 whole cubic inches more mind you.) Or is it simply because both are domestic they have a higher value in your mind than say a souped up VW. The joy of cars is that we can enjoy them how we want, the way we want. Some strip, some street, all fun. If you like your camaro, great, don't force ideals down others throats and they wont do it to you. Fair enough?

And again didn't read what the OP said. He isn't interested in dropping a ton of money. Which for a good 86 he will at least need 3k. The motor and fab work another 10k. Plus whatever is needed for body and interior. The FD is so sought after good f**king luck finding one for 10k or less that isnt ragged out. Though getting a ls1 is easy enough. But those are played out cookie cutters. If we are going to be obnoxiously obscene, Ford Pinto, drop in the RB26. It HASN'T been done. But will still cost a ton. And still doesn't fit well to what he wants.

Yall are both ridiculous. I prefer muscle but they don't handle as well I don't care how much cash you put in them, tuners can be fast and have serious power, you can put waayy more hp into a stock block of a supra than any camaro and they're quarter mile monsters too. but peterpandas generally so full of shit its coming out of his mouth, told me he routinely builds 1000+hp cars once so routinely that he thinks his little supercharged cougar ((types of cars)) are genuinely fast & somehow building those cars doesn't provide him with the cash to build a real car. I can understand if he likes sleepers but give me a break. You can talk all you want in forums with google to back up whatever you want to "learn" with a search, no problem with that but you really over do it man. Flame me all you want, im annoyed with all of your posts in automotive anyways, it means nothing to me.
Now, back on topic. Eclipse GSX, 5k for a decent one. you can rice it as much or as little as you like, buy a pipe and a cool sounding BOV, turn up the boost, get rid of the gsx badge so every civic thinks they have a chance and play for cheap on a awd platform.
Look into subarus like stated above, 3000gt vr4(twin turbo awd) watch for trans problems though. s2000s are probably out of price range, Hardtop audi TT's are cheap and look cool to some, kinda slow but there is a awd version! usually around 6k. 300zx's are getting hella cheap even for the twin turbo version (cant turbo the N/A unfortunately) Can't go wrong with an 86' + turbo supra on the cheap. ive seen lots of FD rx7s in the 7k range, becareful with those motors though, super unreliable. & thats all the "alternate" Vehicles worth anything for cheap off the top of my head. No need to mention integras, preludes and shit like that imo. Hope i could help, goodluck!

Another easy import to get into is the S13-S14 240. I have built a s14 from the ground up for about 6k. I'm pushing about 400whp. It is very clean, looks stock besides the aftermarket wheels and lowered.
IMHO, saying muscle is better than import is a mute point. Anyone can build a car if they have money to go fast. All that matters is what you like and what you want to do with the car. Who cares what people say about how you design the car you want. Its yours, if they hate it then they can F**K OFF.

Looks are decieving. Try 17 in steel wheels from Wheel Vintiques. Sumitomo HTRZ tires 11" of rubber all the way around. 11.70 wilwoods all the way around.Richmond 5 speed. Ford 9" rear. 3:70 rear gear with QA1 coils in all for corners. Richmond 5 speed. It took alot of planning and measuring and getting things right so thats exactly what I wanted horsepower ignorant punks on the street to think. Thanks for the validation Peterpanda I appreciate it. Lol. Yeah? That's cool. I didn't take much of a look at your profile. I just saw some stereotypical bowtie driver with a little D*ck and a car to help him catch little 17 year old girls... Considering, you pretty much look like shrek, and have two little bastards.
Anyways, how's traction with 1000+ hp on just 11" rubber?

Civics, prelude, neon, 240z, 280z, 300zx z31 and the z32 version, there are so many cars out there u could work on, even a kia sephia, throw a r34 body kit on it and watch heads turn. But if u have money to spend, concider a rx-7 or a 350z or even the bad boys of the bad boys, nissan skylines, they already come looking sick as hell so adding more to it is just a plus

. I'm angry because you have no right to treat "kids" the way you do. You think your kids are going to be able to walk out and buy a muscle car for $1500 bucks when they are old enough to drive? Ha. I got lucky to pick up the few that I do have, and I paid dearly for them. The fact of the matter is that you don't like imports... Great. Just don't attack me personally. You don't know what its like to be a younger, automotively obsessed young man in these days. You have a choice between Honda's, second hand beat up mustangs, v6 camaros, and othe. Assorted hand-me-downs. Try finding a decent muscle car in a high school kids budget... It doesn't happen often.

Is it that you hate riced out civics or all imports? There's a big difference. There's sorted out Japanese cars all over the place that kill American V8s at every light and on every curvy canyon road. Then there's $1700 integras with wings and fake carbon pieces that piss everyone off...I hate those too. I love the sound of big cam with too much overlap pulsing out of a couple 40 series. But everyone has their tastes. As long as you spun the wrenches on it, I like it. We're all hobbyists and there's a lot to be learned from each crowd. So how about getting along and sharing the tips and tricks we've picked up along the way rather than driving a wedge between our subcultures? It doesn't matter what you're wrenching on, just that you're wrenching.

Hey Bro I wasnt talkin to you. But let me say this I know what it was to be young but when I was 26 like you are now I was never this angry. A piece of advice that I have lived by and I hope you dont take offense to it is. ~Never be so anxious to speak you never listen~ I wish ya the best in all your endeavers.

Thats a spot on quote. When I started out I worked at Mallory/Erson right out of highschool. That was back in the day with Don Garlits-Eddie Hill-Bruce Allen. I learned to keep quiet and listen and watch what they were doin. THEY know how to make horsepower. First motor I built was a .030 over 350 did alot of research and asked alot of questions. When I was done it Dynoed at 611 Hp. And tame enough for the street. we would race in Reno 30 miles away and I would always drive mine it got 16 miles to the gallon. On the 1/4 mile 10.83 @ 128mph Hoosier Quiktime street tires and mufflers. that was in the same car you see on my profile. Now I am older I was fortunate to buy project cars for my kids hoping to get them in the hobbie. I work on everything from imports, drag cars, salt flat cars to a 1928 AA Dump truck that was left to me when my Grandmother died. I hope to pass it on to my kids or anyone for that matter.

That's what this hobby is all about. Hanging out with the guys and helping each other achieve our goals. But b*tching and flaming is exactly why people distrust forum advice. It turns into an argument and the guy asking the original question is left holding his wang with no real answer. Just chime in where you have the knowledge to help out keep it cordial. Save the bashing for sitting around the shop drinking beer with your buddies. I don't mean that to anyone in particular because we've all been guilty of it. Just be mindful that people come to you seeking help.

Remember what i said about being full of shit? This is the part where your ignorance makes you look dumb. I got Tboned because a guy ran a stop sign. I probably put more miles on my race bike last year than you did driving your DD, had nothing to do with inexperience or "being a dumbass" Oh and i clearly stated ((type cars)) after cougar. It's cool if your not into flashy cars, im not either or helped out* On big builds & i respect that you help your parents and are making something of yourself but dont be so full of shit.

Sorry to hear about your accident Bro. Get well soon. I owned a bike for a while and thats what scared me the most was inattentive drivers. LOL plus I liked the speed and got into a couple hairy spots and knew then that if I kept it my days where numbered but it was a blast.Plus having kids makes you rethink what your doin in life. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

. Just like you did in your first post in this forum? Saying that I "annoy" you, but you can't even get facts straight about me? Sounds like all I did was flip around your words and make some bullshit up about you... The exact thing you did to me.

I use to have a 1995 supra 2jz engine. It was mostly stock. Pretty much any drag strip you go, you will find a supra there. Engine will take 800hp without any major engine upgrades. One thing I love about it was that fact that it's a straight 6..soo easy to work on.

You know at first I was a little ticked about d68ss' attitude towards seemingly anything not American muscle, but peterpan, you need to calm down man. I drive an import, one that can handle plenty of American V8 supercharged or not,and I don't seriously take him for ignorant in some regards, sure to state if it isnt muscle from 'Merica is kinda si.gle minded but in all seriousness it takes a lot less money *usually* to make a muscle car faster and more powerful. But don't bring people's kids into it and wish injury upon others based on an age old debate that never has and never will be resolved. Do you think that getting pissy on a dating site forum is going to change the world? C'mon man...

Hey OMG take me any way you want me I still stand by my statement "Looney Tuners" as I said at least the ones I have ran accross dump $ after $ in a money pit they will never anything out of it. I worked in a Honda/Subaru dealership and I understand about loyalty and love for your vehicle. Dont take offense to it but most of your generation have no concept of "life" and I understand that its just immature ignorance. I used to laugh at these guys with thier sideways hats, Tats, and holes in thier ears big enough to put a pad lock through it (and believe me I thought about it) didnt have enough money to feed thier children they have produced but always had "credit cards" to buy more crap to put on thier cars or another tat . I just weep for the future . What Im trying to get at if your gonna put you $ in something be smart and put it into something you will get it out of it. But that makes to much sense.

That's not an import enthusiast, though. That's a tool. I grew up with 1980s cars and have grown to love the "gas crunch" vehicles because they are the "black sheep" in the performance world. These include imports, American "muscle" and sleeper sedans. The people that you are describing are a sad stereotype among automotive enthusiasts... Like all the racial stereotypes, while some are stupid, neglectful and wasteful, others are intelligent, tactful, and polite. I get so frustrated when someone downplays a genre of automobiles because of the idiot owners...

Actually, I tried with the facts... You wouldn't hear it... So I got pissed and said some inappropriate things. For that, I apologize, but I stand by my stance that imports can be a respectable performance machine. I'm not getting drawn into another argument, and I'm sorry about what I said about your kids, but claiming that your Camaro is the only car out there worth two Shits is ludicrous.
